Latest news

  • Rodriguez earned a save against Pittsburgh on Wednesday, allowing two hits and striking out two batters over two scoreless innings.

Rodriguez entered in the eighth inning and quickly got into trouble by allowing back-to-back singles to start the frame, but he recovered by retiring the next three batters without letting any runs cross the plate. With primary closer Mason Miller unavailable after having pitched each of the previous two days, Rodriguez returned for the ninth inning and had a much smoother go, retiring the side in order on 12 pitches. The save was Rodriguez's second of the season, both of which have come over his past five appearances. With those two saves and four holds over his past 12 outings -- and a minuscule 0.63 ERA along with a 19:1 K:BB across 14.1 frames during that span -- it's clear that Rodriguez has become a trusted high-leverage arm in the Padres' bullpen. However, Miller is immensely secure in his closer role, so any future save opportunities Rodriguez receives will likely be dependent on Miller being unavailable.

  • Rodriguez allowed one hit and struck out two over a scoreless ninth inning to earn the save in Friday's 7-5 win over the Guardians.

Rodriguez was called upon to protect a two-run advantage and responded with the first save of his major-league career. The right-hander allowed a double to Brayan Rocchio but bounced back and closed out San Diego's victory with back-to-back strikeouts. Friday's save doesn't signal a change atop the bullpen hierarchy, as Mason Miller will remain the Padres' closer. Still, Rodriguez has worked his way into San Diego's late-inning mix and owns a 2.09 ERA across 50 appearances and 55 innings in 2026.

  • Rodriguez will serve as the opener for Friday's game against the Giants, Sammy Levitt of 97.3 The Fan San Diego reports.

Rodriguez will draw his fourth start of the season, but he's been limited to one inning in each of those appearances and will presumably be in line for a similar workload Friday. German Marquez is likely to pitch multiple innings in relief once Rodriguez exits the game, per Levitt.

  • The Padres recalled Rodriguez from Double-A San Antonio on Monday.

San Diego initially sent Rodriguez to the rookie-level Arizona Complex League on June 19, a move that was made to build in some rest for the hard-throwing right-hander. Rodriguez eventually moved up to San Antonio, with whom he made his lone appearance Sunday before getting the call back to the big leagues. The 22-year-old has been exceptional during his time with San Diego this season (2.10 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 32:12 K:BB in 34.1 innings), but due to the number of quality arms in the bullpen, Rodriguez may have to settle for a middle-relief role.

  • The Padres optioned Rodriguez to the Arizona Complex League on Friday.

The Padres have been planning to get Rodriguez some time off to rest, per Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune, so the team will send him all the way down to rookie ball while he does so. The 22-year-old righty owns a 2.10 ERA and 1.19 WHIP across 34.1 innings with the Friars this season, so he'll likely return to San Diego's bullpen once he's well rested. Mason Miller was activated from the bereavement list in a corresponding move.

  • Rodriguez will serve as the Padres' opening pitcher in Wednesday's game versus the Cardinals, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

Rodriguez will cover the first inning or two before turning the ball over to Griffin Canning, who will be utilized in bulk relief. The 22-year-old righty boasts a 2.16 ERA this season but has been scored upon in four of his last five appearances.
