  • Slater became a free agent after opting out of his minor-league contract with the Rays on Tuesday, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports.

Slater was slashing .305/.407/.453 in 35 games with Triple-A Durham, but since a promotion to the majors wasn't imminent, he'll seek a gig elsewhere. The 33-year-old outfielder has slashed .231/.311/.277 across 28 contests between three different big-league teams this season.

  • The Rays agreed to a minor-league contract with Slater on Monday, Ryan Bass of Rays.tv reports.

The veteran outfielder elected free agency after being designated for assignment by Tampa Bay in mid-June, but he'll rejoin the organization on another minor-league deal. Slater played in just seven games with the Rays and went 6-for-22 (.273 average) with two doubles and three steals. He also had stints with the Marlins and Mets early in the season, and he combined to post a .518 OPS in 21 contests between those two clubs.

  • Slater elected free agency Monday after clearing waivers, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Slater will head to the open market for the fourth time since spring training after having parted ways with the Tigers, Marlins, Mets and most recently, the Rays. The 33-year-old was up with Tampa Bay for about a week and a half, handling a short-side platoon role in the corner outfield while going 6-for-22 with two doubles, three walks and three stolen bases over seven games. Slater could quickly catch on elsewhere with an organization looking to bring aboard a right-handed bench bat.

  • The Rays designated Slater for assignment Friday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

The veteran outfielder joined Tampa Bay on a minor-league deal in late May and was added to the big-league roster June 8. Slater went 6-for-22 with three walks, two doubles, three steals, an RBI and two runs in seven games for the Rays, but he'll be the odd man out after the club activated Jonny DeLuca (hamstring) from the injured list. Slater has already seen action with three MLB clubs in 2026 and could return to free agency if he passes through waivers unclaimed.

  • Slater went 1-for-4 with a stolen base in Tuesday's 1-0 loss to the Dodgers.

Slater has gone 6-for-22 (.273) with two doubles, two steals and one RBI over six games since he joined the Rays' big-league roster June 8. He was designated for assignment by the Mets in mid-May and elected free agency before signing with the Rays on May 26. He's played with three teams this season, batting .231 with a .578 OPS, three steals, three RBI, three doubles, six runs scored and no home runs over 73 plate appearances between the Rays, Mets and Marlins. Slater will likely fill a short-side platoon role in the outfield as long as he's with Tampa Bay.
