Chapman passed a physical examination Saturday, which was the final hurdle in order for his $13 million option for 2027 to vest, Francys Romero of BeisbolFR.com reports.
The other requirement for Chapman's option to vest was throwing at least 40 innings, which he surpassed in mid-August. It was another dominant campaign as Boston's closer, as he finished the regular season having converted 35 of 37 save chances with a 1.92 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 71:23 K:BB across 51.2 innings.

Chapman (lat) struck out the side in order during the ninth inning to earn the save Wednesday against Cleveland.
Chapman last pitched Sept. 13 due to a lat issue, but he showed no signs of rust Wednesday in his return to the mound. The star closer has now punched out three in back-to-back outings and hasn't blown a save since June 28 against the Yankees. He has a shiny 1.92 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 71:23 K:BB with 35 saves in 37 attempts across 51.2 innings.

Chapman (lat) will not pitch this weekend but is expected to return during the team's final homestand next week, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.
Chapman was not available for the last two contests, which were save opportunities. Garrett Whitlock (Thursday) and Erik Miller (Friday) closed out the two wins. The Red Sox, who have a six-game lead over the nearest playoff hopefuls with eight games left, have some wiggle room and will not rush Chapman back.

Chapman downplayed his lat issue Friday, saying he's "not worried at all" about the injury and plans to pitch again during Boston's final regular-season homestand next week, Sean McAdam of MassLive.com reports.
Chapman said he first felt the injury Tuesday, and he's improved throughout the week. With Boston closing in on a playoff berth, the team will likely be conservative with its star closer. Garrett Whitlock handled the ninth inning of Thursday's 4-3 win over the Rangers, locking down his fourth save of the season. it sounds like Chapman will be unavailable for this weekend's set with the Rays.

Interim manager Chad Tracy said after Thursday's 4-3 win over the Rangers that Chapman was unavailable due to a lat issue, Tim Healey of The Boston Globe reports.
Chapman has been dealing with the issue for a couple days, and Tracy said the Red Sox will be "conservative" with the 38-year-old. With the left-hander unavailable Thursday, Garrett Whitlock came on for the save, his fourth of the season. Chapman hasn't pitched since Sunday, when he walked two and struck out three in an inning of work against the Royals to secure his 34th save of 2026. Boston is well positioned to secure a playoff berth soon and is likely to be extra cautious with its closer during the final days of the regular season.

Chapman worked around two walks to earn the save Sunday against the Royals, striking out three in a hitless and scoreless ninth inning.
Chapman let the possible tying run get to the plate following a pair of free passes, but he punched out three in a row to hang on for the save. The star southpaw continues to roll, having not blown a save since June 28 against the Yankees. He has a 1.95 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 68:23 K:BB over 50.2 innings, collecting 34 saves in 36 opportunities.
