  • Volpe will start at third base and will bat seventh in the first game of Friday's doubleheader against the Orioles.

Volpe played a few games at third base while at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre this season, but this will be his first start at the hot corner at the major-league level. The Orioles are sending lefty Trevor Rogers to the hill, and Volpe could wind up starting at third base over Ryan McMahon versus southpaws during the playoffs.

  • Volpe went 3-for-4 with a grand slam, an additional RBI and a stolen base in a 10-3 win against the Rockies on Thursday.

Volpe logged his first MLB action since Aug. 1 after being called up from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre earlier Thursday. The 25-year-old knocked an RBI single in his first plate appearance and later made an even bigger splash with a grand slam in the seventh inning. Volpe started at second base Thursday, and he could get plenty of starts there in the short term with Jazz Chisholm (thumb) on the injured list. Volpe hasn't produced consistently at the plate as a major leaguer, though he had been red hot in the minors prior to his call-up, posting a 1.675 OPS with five homers and five steals over his past eight games with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

  • Volpe is starting at second base and batting ninth in Thursday's game versus the Rockies.

Volpe was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre earlier in the day to take the roster spot vacated by Jazz Chisholm (thumb), and he will get the first opportunity to fill in at the keystone. It will be Volpe's first time playing second base at the major-league level, as he began seeing his first reps at the position in August at Triple-A.

  • The Yankees recalled Volpe from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Thursday.

Volpe has managed just a .240/.325/.322 batting line in the majors this season. He was on a heater at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, however, slashing .292/.390/.660 with 10 home runs and eight stolen bases in 28 games since being demoted. Manager Aaron Boone could choose to ride the hot hand and play Volpe at second base while Jazz Chisholm (thumb) is out, though super utility player Jose Caballero will also be in the mix.

  • The Yankees are expected to recall Volpe from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Thursday, Jorge Castillo of ESPN.com reports.

The Yankees are going to need an extra infielder once they place Jazz Chisholm (thumb) on the injured list, and it will be Volpe who joins the parent club as the replacement. The 25-year-old has thrived since moving down to Triple-A in early August, slashing .295/.393/.667 with 10 homers, 31 RBI, 22 runs and eight steals across 122 plate appearances with the RailRiders. He's worked exclusively as a shortstop throughout his four seasons in the majors but has lately been working at second and third base in the minors, which could open up more avenues to playing time once he rejoins the Pinstripes.
