Latest news

  • Knizner cleared waivers Friday and was sent outright to Triple-A Sacramento, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.

Knizner slashed .219/.288/.356 with two homers, four RBI and eight runs scored across 80 plate appearances in the majors this year while providing San Francisco with depth at catcher. He'll lose his place on the 40-man roster to begin the offseason but could have a chance to win it back during spring training.

Knizner hit a two-run shot off Nick Pivetta in the second inning, getting the Giants on the scoreboard. Knizner has recorded an extra-base hit in each of his last two appearances but is batting just .105 with two runs scored, a home run and a double across 20 plate appearances in September. • Knizner went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored in Monday's 7-3 win over Atlanta.

Knizner hit a double in the second inning and added a single in the sixth before coming around to score. The veteran catcher signed with San Francisco on Aug. 11 and has appeared in 11 games, slashing .222/.300/.407 with a home run and two additional runs scored across 30 plate appearances.

  • Knizner went 3-for-4 with a solo home run in Saturday's 3-2 loss to the Red Sox.

Knizner was in Boston's system for about a month and a half earlier in the season, but he opted out of his minor-league contract Aug. 7 and found work with the Giants four days later. He came back to haunt his old organization, collecting his first three hits of the campaign in this contest. Knizner has filled the backup role behind Drew Cavanaugh during his time with the Giants, and that's unlikely to change any time soon, as Jesus Rodriguez (elbow) is expected to fill more of a utility role in the infield when he comes back from the injured list. Even with steadier hitting, Knizner's workload is unlikely to increase much down the stretch.

  • Knizner signed a major-league contract with the Giants on Tuesday, Justice delos Santos of The San Jose Mercury News reports.

Knizner has yet to play in an MLB game this season, but he's slashed .294/.393/.552 with 12 homers, 38 RBI and 33 runs scored across 234 plate appearances at Triple-A. He'll now reunite with the Giants to provide depth at catcher, replacing Zach Morgan.
