  • Alvarez did not factor into the decision Friday against the Mets, allowing five runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out seven across 4.2 innings.

Friday marked the first time since July 7 that Alvarez has given up more than three earned runs in a start, a streak that spanned 12 outings. He gave up runs in three of the five frames in which he pitched, including solo home runs to Bo Bichette and Carson Benge in the fifth. It was a bit of a disappointing way to wrap up the 2026 regular season for Alvarez, but the 27-year-old southpaw will end the year with a 3.43 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 114:51 K:BB across 112.2 innings.

  • Alvarez didn't factor into the decision Saturday against the Cardinals after allowing five hits and a walk while striking out eight over six scoreless innings.

Alvarez delivered one of his strongest outings of the season and matched his season-high output in strikeouts, which was set in his previous start Sept. 12 against the Angels. The left-hander exited with Washington ahead 3-0, but the bullpen surrendered the lead before the Nationals eventually prevailed 8-5 in 11 innings. Alvarez threw 61 of 92 pitches for strikes and lowered his ERA to 3.17. He hasn't given up more than three earned runs in any of his 15 outings since the All-Star break, posting a 3.58 ERA and 1.46 WHIP with a 65:29 K:BB across 60.1 innings over that stretch. Alvarez is expected to make his final start of the regular season Friday at home against the Mets.

  • Alvarez didn't factor into the decision Saturday, allowing one hit and four walks over seven scoreless innings in a 6-5, extra-inning win over the Angels. He struck out eight.

The 27-year-old southpaw delivered his best start yet in the majors, blanking the Halos over 97 pitches (61 strikes) while setting a career high in Ks and leaving the mound in line for his third win, only for the Nationals' bullpen to falter yet again. The quality start was Alvarez's third, with all of them coming since the beginning of August -- over eight outings during that stretch he's posted a 2.44 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 41:19 K:BB in 44.1 frames. He'll look to stay sharp in his next start, which is scheduled to come on the road next weekend in St. Louis.

  • Alvarez allowed three runs on four hits with five strikeouts and two walks over 4.1 innings Sunday against the Dodgers. He did not factor into the decision.

The Nationals held a 4-1 lead heading into the fifth inning, but the southpaw was pulled with one out after giving up a run on a single and a double. Reliever Brad Lord then allowed the inherited runner plus a runner of his own to score, tying the game. Alvarez issued at least two walks for a fourth straight outing and threw just 48 of 78 pitches for strikes Sunday while generating only five whiffs. He remains winless in his past 11 appearances and has a 4.03 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 43:27 K:BB across 53.2 innings during that span. A home matchup versus the Angels likely awaits him next weekend.

  • Alvarez didn't factor into the decision Sunday against the Marlins, allowing two hits and three walks over six scoreless innings. He struck out six.

Alvarez was excellent Sunday, as he held Miami to just a pair of singles, though he ultimately came away with a no-decision as the Nats' bullpen imploded in a six-run ninth inning. Alvarez has now gone 10 straight appearances without a win despite posting a 2.41 ERA across his last seven outings (37.1 innings). Overall, the southpaw is 2-6 with a 3.47 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 86:41 K:BB across 90.2 innings this season. Alvarez is tentatively lined up for a road matchup with the Dodgers his next time out.
