Philadelphia demoted Rangel to Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Tuesday, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports.
Rangel was roughed up in his lone outing Monday since returning to the big-league club on August 9. The right-hander went 2.2 innings, allowing three runs on six hits and a walk while striking out three against St. Louis. The Phillies elevated Alex McFarlane to replace Rangel on the active roster.

The Phillies recalled Rangel from Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Sunday.
Rangel will provide the Phillies with some extra bullpen coverage in Sunday's series finale versus the Blue Jays, but if he isn't needed for that contest, he could be an option to make a spot start. Andrew Painter (hamstring) and Aaron Nola (knee) each exited their most recent starts early, though both are tentatively in line to take their next turns through the rotation.

Reliever Alex McFarlane was recalled from Double-A Reading in a corresponding move, but the Phillies will eventually need to add a new fifth starter to the mix following Rangel's demotion. The right-hander was sent back to the minors after he was torched for five runs on seven hits and three walks over four innings in Sunday's 6-1 loss to the Mets. Over six appearances (three starts) with the big club this season, Rangel has gone 0-3 with a 5.40 ERA and 1.59 WHIP across 23.1 frames.

The Mets jumped all over Rangel right away, driving in each of the five runs across the first and second innings. The 28-year-old right-hander at least settled in a bit thereafter to give the Phillies some extra length via two more scoreless frames, but he's still yet to work into the fifth inning in any of his three starts. Rangel will be tough to trust as a fantasy streamer when he brings a lackluster 5.40 ERA, 1.59 WHIP and 26:12 K:BB over 23.1 innings into his next scheduled appearance against the Yankees.
