Latest news

  • Civale (6-8) allowed one run on three hits and a walk across 2.1 innings of relief and took the loss in the first game of Friday's doubleheader against the Red Sox.

Civale mostly pitched well but he allowed a single run in the seventh inning to take the loss out of the bullpen. This was the veteran righty's first loss since July 10, and in 18 appearances since then, he's got a strong 1.72 ERA across 36.2 innings. That gives Civale some momentum heading into the postseason, and while he's not a high-leverage option for the Cubs, he gives the team someone who can reliably soak up some innings in relief.

  • Civale tossed three scoreless innings to earn the save in Friday's 6-1 win over the Marlins. He allowed a hit and two walks while striking out three.

After six innings from starter Shota Imanaga, Civale picked up the baton and carried it to the finish line for his second save of the season. The long-relief outing gave Chicago's bullpen a much-needed break after a tough series with Milwaukee, particularly with closer Jacob Webb (forearm) a bit banged up. Civale now has a new career high in saves, as he came into the year with just one save to his name across seven MLB seasons.

  • Civale retired the final two batters of Thursday's 4-2, 10-inning win over the Cardinals to record his first save of the season.

Civale was the sixth Chicago pitcher used on the afternoon, and he retired his two batters on nine pitches to record just his second career MLB save, with his other one coming last year. The veteran righty has now appeared in three games for the Cubs since coming over via trade from the A's on July 18, and he's allowed two runs across five innings while striking out six. Civale doesn't have a ton of fantasy value at the moment, as he's mostly just bullpen depth with his new team, though he's capable of making spot starts if needed.

  • Civale allowed two runs on four hits across 2.1 innings of relief in Tuesday's 11-2 win over the Tigers. He walked two and struck out two.

After a brief stint with the Cubs last season, Civale made his 2026 team debut in a fairly low-pressure situation, as he entered the game staked to a 9-0 lead. The righty continued his mediocre stretch of play as he saw his ERA climb to 5.49 to go along with a 1.65 WHIP across 77 innings this year. Civale was traded to Chicago on Saturday as some veteran depth, and he's not likely to have a ton of fantasy value the rest of the way.

  • The Athletics traded Civale to the Cubs on Saturday in exchange for minor-league reliever Aiden Moffett, Jesse Rogers of ESPN.com reports.

Civale was DFA'd by the Athletics on Wednesday but will now get an opportunity to contribute for the Cubs, who have lost a plethora of pitchers to the injured list. The 31-year-old spent a brief amount of time with the Cubs last season, giving up three earned runs in 13 innings out of the bullpen. He hasn't been nearly as effective this year, pitching to a 5.42 ERA and 1.62 WHIP across 74.2 frames, but injuries may allow him to at least work in the rotation.

  • The Athletics designated Civale for assignment Wednesday, Jason Burke of Roundtable.io reports.

Civale enjoyed a fair amount of success early in the season, posting a 3.31 ERA and 1.39 WHIP over 51.2 innings in his first 10 starts. However, he's since turned in a 10.17 ERA and 2.13 WHIP in 23 frames while recording a loss in each of his last six outings. His struggles will now cost him his spot in the rotation and on the 40-man roster. He could draw interest on the waiver wire from teams in need of rotation depth for the second half, though any team that claims him would be on the hook for the remainder of the $6 million he's owed this year.
