LeBron James returns to Cleveland on Friday night for the first time as a member of the Philadelphia 76ers, and he arrives on the league's best team. The 76ers are 8-1 with five straight wins and the top record in the Eastern Conference heading into a 7:30 p.m. ET NBA Cup group-stage game at Rocket Arena, streaming on Prime Video. The Cavaliers are 4-4 and dealing with injuries to Jarrett Allen and Peyton Watson. James spent 11 seasons in Cleveland and led the franchise to its first title in 2016, then chose Philadelphia this offseason after also considering the Cavaliers and Miami.

For fantasy managers and bettors, the homecoming is the headline, but the more useful story is how Philadelphia's success has reshaped every one of its stars' fantasy profiles.

LeBron's new role: facilitator first

James is averaging 15.7 points, 7.4 rebounds and 7.4 assists per game in his first season with the 76ers. His scoring average, his field-goal attempts (13.1 per game) and his free-throw attempts (4.4 per game) are all on pace for career lows.

Rebounds7.4
Assists7.4
Field-goal attempts13.1
Free-throw attempts4.4

That is a deliberate shift, not a decline in skill, and it is working: Philadelphia is winning, and James has cautioned against talk of the Finals despite the hot start. For fantasy, though, the change matters. In points leagues, he is no longer a first-round value because his scoring has dropped so far. In category leagues, the rebounds and assists keep him useful, but he is closer to a third- or fourth-round player than the top-10 asset he was for most of his career. Managers who drafted him expecting vintage scoring should adjust expectations rather than wait for a rebound.

James also became the first player in NBA history with 16,000 career field goals this season, and he is 21-6 in 27 career games against Cleveland. Expect a motivated performance, but do not expect the usage pattern to change for one night.

Tyrese Maxey is the engine

The bigger fantasy story in Philadelphia is Tyrese Maxey, who is averaging 28.0 points per game. With James operating as a facilitator, Maxey has absorbed the scoring load, and his fantasy value has climbed into the elite tier. He is a must-start every night.

There is one item to watch: Maxey had a late-game scare with his right hand in Philadelphia's last game. He was not listed on the team's injury report for Friday, and the 76ers had no starters on the report, so he is expected to play.

Joel Embiid: healthy and productive

Joel Embiid is averaging 19.6 points and 10.0 rebounds per game. Those numbers are below his peak, but the most important stat is availability: he is playing, and the team is winning. In category leagues, his value is tied to blocks and free throws as well as points and rebounds, which makes him a strong weekly start. The Cavaliers' frontcourt, built around Evan Mobley and Allen, is one of the tougher interior matchups he will face, which slightly lowers his ceiling Friday.

Cleveland's injuries: Allen and Watson questionable

Jarrett Allen and Tyrese Proctor both left Cleveland's loss in Oklahoma City, and Allen is listed as questionable with a contusion. Peyton Watson is also questionable with a hamstring issue.

Peyton WatsonCLEQuestionable (hamstring)

If Allen sits, Evan Mobley becomes the primary interior defender and rebounder, which gives him a usage and rebounding bump. That would also open the paint for Embiid, a boost to his outlook. On Philadelphia's side, the absences of Bona, Barlow and Hukporti are depth issues that do not affect the starters.

Donovan Mitchell vs. Maxey

The marquee individual matchup is Donovan Mitchell against Maxey, two high-volume scoring guards. Mitchell is a nightly start, and a competitive, high-energy game in front of a home crowd is a good setting for a big scoring night. In DFS, both guards are strong tournament plays, and a game-stack built around them makes sense if the total is elevated.

Betting angle

Philadelphia is favored on the road, with the spread listed between 2.5 and 3.5 depending on the book. Prediction markets give the 76ers about a two-in-three chance to win. Public projections favor Philadelphia, with one landing on 118-112.

The key variable is Allen. If he is ruled out, the line should move further toward Philadelphia, and Embiid's player props become more attractive. If he plays, Cleveland's size makes this a closer game than the records suggest. For the model's view, see the NBA predictions page and the daily NBA picks piece.

What to do in your league

Start Maxey and Embiid without hesitation. Start LeBron in category leagues for his rebounds and assists, but recalibrate his value in points leagues, where his reduced scoring has dropped him out of the elite tier. Start Mitchell and Mobley, and check Allen's status before lineup lock: if he sits, Mobley gets a bump and Embiid's matchup improves. For DFS, Maxey and Mitchell are the top tournament plays in this game.
