The 2026-27 NBA season tips off Tuesday, Oct. 20, with a three-game opening-night slate on NBC and Peacock, and all three home teams are favored. The Detroit Pistons host the Boston Celtics at 3 p.m. ET, the defending champion New York Knicks raise their banner before facing LeBron James and the Philadelphia 76ers at 7 p.m. ET, and the San Antonio Spurs host the Oklahoma City Thunder in a Western Conference finals rematch at 9:30 p.m. ET.

The injury report is where fantasy managers and bettors should focus. Oklahoma City has not said whether Chet Holmgren will play after he missed the entire preseason with a quad contusion, Josh Hart is coming off ankle soreness for New York, and Philadelphia is already down a center. Final reports are due by 5 p.m. local time Monday, the day before the games.

The board

Lines have moved since the schedule came out in August, and sportsbooks do not agree on the Knicks number. The most recent prices we could confirm are below.

MatchupTip (ET)SpreadTotal
Celtics at Pistons3:00 p.m.DET -1.5222.5
76ers at Knicks7:00 p.m.NYK -3.5 to -5.5229.5 (opener)
Thunder at Spurs9:30 p.m.SAS -1.5Not confirmed

SportsLine and WagerTalk list Detroit as a 1.5-point favorite with a total of 222.5, down from Detroit -2.5 and 225.5 when DraftKings first posted the game in August. Sports Illustrated's opening odds had the Knicks at -3.5 with a 229.5 total, while TheLines reported an early FanDuel price of Knicks -5.5. CBS Sports and TheLines both have San Antonio as a 1.5-point home favorite over Oklahoma City.

Celtics at Pistons: a coin flip to start the day

The matinee features the top two seeds in the East from last season, and the line says it is close to a toss-up. Both teams spent part of the preseason locking in rotation pieces. Boston made Payton Pritchard's two-year, $44.2 million extension official on Saturday, keeping its bench scorer in place, and Detroit gave Ausar Thompson a five-year, $155 million rookie-scale extension in September.

For fantasy, the early tip matters more than people think. A 3 p.m. ET game on a Tuesday locks before most daily lineups are finalized, so managers in daily leagues need to check Boston's and Detroit's injury reports Monday night rather than waiting for warmups. Jayson Tatum enters what is expected to be a full season after his Achilles recovery, and his minutes in the opener are the number to watch. Boston has every reason to be careful in game one of 82.

76ers at Knicks: ring night and a thin Philadelphia frontcourt

New York will raise its first championship banner in 53 years before tip-off, and James makes his Philadelphia debut at Madison Square Garden. The Knicks are favored by somewhere between 3.5 and 5.5 points depending on the book.

Hart sat out the Knicks' preseason finale against Toronto with right ankle soreness. Coach Mike Brown said he does not expect it to keep Hart out, and Kristian Winfield of the New York Daily News reported that Hart is expected to be available Tuesday. Hart's rebounding and assists make him a valuable fantasy guard when he plays heavy minutes, so his status is worth confirming Monday.

Philadelphia's frontcourt is the bigger concern. Backup center Ariel Hukporti tore his right Achilles in the preseason opener against these same Knicks and will miss the season. Adem Bona has been working back from a left foot sprain he suffered playing for Turkey this offseason, and the 76ers signed Tacko Fall to a two-way contract ahead of the opener. James, who is managing chronic arthritis in his left foot, has even been mentioned as a small-ball option at center. Joel Embiid's minutes are the swing factor: if he plays big minutes, the 76ers can compete on the glass, but there is little behind him if he sits or gets into foul trouble.

Thunder at Spurs: the Holmgren question

The nightcap pairs Shai Gilgeous-Alexander against Victor Wembanyama, and the line, San Antonio -1.5, says the market sees these teams as roughly even. Holmgren is the reason that number could move. He missed every preseason game with a bruised quad, held out by the Thunder medical staff as a precaution. Coach Mark Daigneault declined to say whether Holmgren will play, saying he would leave availability to the injury report, which the team will file at 5 p.m. the day before the game.

Oklahoma City also enters the season without Lu Dort, who was traded to Atlanta this offseason. Cason Wallace, who made Second Team All-Defense last season and is still negotiating a rookie-scale extension before Monday's deadline, is the most widely expected replacement in the starting lineup, with Ajay Mitchell the other option. San Antonio, meanwhile, has used a three-guard look with Dylan Harper and De'Aaron Fox in the backcourt.

What to do in your league

Start Wembanyama with confidence. If Holmgren sits, the Spurs' center has an even cleaner path to blocks and rebounds, and Oklahoma City would be leaning on smaller lineups against him.

Bump Wallace in daily formats. A starting role would push his minutes up, and his defensive playmaking makes him a steady source of steals. He is a useful value play on a three-game slate where salaries are tight.

Fade Philadelphia's backup bigs. Fall and Bona are not draftable until one of them shows he can hold a role. If Embiid plays, he soaks up nearly all the center minutes.

Check Hart late. If he is cleared, he is a strong start. If he is limited, his rebounds and assists drop with his minutes.

Betting angle

All three spreads are small enough that injury news can flip them. The Thunder at Spurs line is the most sensitive: Holmgren's status Monday afternoon is the single piece of news most likely to move a number on the slate. The Knicks line is the widest disagreement between books, and the size of that range suggests the market is still deciding how much to credit James in his first game with Philadelphia. Detroit's shrinking spread, from -2.5 in August to -1.5 now, shows the market drifting toward Boston.

What's next

Wednesday brings the first full night of the week. Giannis Antetokounmpo makes his Miami Heat debut at home against LaMelo Ball and the Minnesota Timberwolves at 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN, a game in which both stars debut for new teams. That game opens a doubleheader that ends with Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors at the Los Angeles Lakers at 10 p.m. ET.

Before any of it, Monday is the busiest administrative day of the year. The rookie-scale extension deadline passes at 5 p.m. Central, teams must cut to 15 standard contracts, and the first official injury reports land. Check all three before you set a lineup or place a bet on opening night.
