Lamar Jackson Is a Long Shot and Justin Jefferson Is a Practice Watch: The Week 5 Injury Watch

Baltimore's Week 5 plan is starting to look like a Tyler Huntley plan. Lamar Jackson is dealing with an ankle sprain that leaves him with only an outside chance to play against Atlanta on Sunday night, according to NFL Network, and the reporting since Monday points to an injury that could cost him one or two games rather than a long absence. That makes him the headliner as clubs file their first official practice reports of the week on Wednesday afternoon.

He is not the only decision fantasy managers will be making off this week's practice reports. Justin Jefferson is trying to return from his ankle sprain in New Orleans, Kyle Monangai is managing a thumb injury after his 30-carry breakout, Rico Dowdle has missed two straight games with a toe injury, and Thursday night's Cowboys-Buccaneers game already has two days of reports on file. Here is where every fantasy-relevant status stands as Wednesday's sessions begin, and what each one means for lineups.

The Week 5 injury board

The Ja'Marr Chase concussion, the Saquon Barkley hamstring and Jayden Daniels' return have been covered in depth already this week, so they appear here only for reference. The table reflects the latest confirmed status entering Wednesday's practice reports.

Lamar Jackson and the Huntley question

Jackson was sharp before the injury, posting a passer rating above 140 in the first half of Baltimore's 24-18 win over Tennessee. He exited after the second quarter, and Tyler Huntley went 8 of 9 for 63 yards in relief while the offense was held scoreless across five second-half drives. NFL Network reported that Huntley will start if Jackson cannot go, and that how Jesse Minter manages the recovery will shape the next few weeks, with Cleveland and Cincinnati following the Atlanta trip.

The practical problem for fantasy managers is the Sunday night kickoff. Waiting on a game-time decision means waiting until roughly 7 p.m. ET Sunday, after every afternoon alternative has locked. Unless Jackson is a full participant by Friday, managers should start a replacement and accept the small chance he plays. In superflex and two-quarterback formats, Huntley is a reasonable add, but his short, quick-throw profile last Sunday caps the ceiling for Zay Flowers and pushes more of the offense toward Derrick Henry, who becomes the safest Baltimore start of the week.

Justin Jefferson's practice week is the whole story

Jefferson sprained his ankle in Week 3 against Tampa Bay and sat out Minnesota's Week 4 win over Miami. ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported he is hopeful to return against the Saints, and the Vikings do not view the injury as a long-term issue. Kevin O'Connell was more measured: he said Jefferson made great progress last week but that he had no real projection on availability, that the medical staff would decide whether Jefferson can start getting limited work, and that the team wants him back at 100 percent.

That last point matters because Minnesota has its bye in Week 6. A team that wants a star fully healthy has an easy path to giving him two more weeks off. Treat Wednesday as the first checkpoint: a limited session keeps a Week 5 return in play, while a DNP on Wednesday followed by anything less than a full Friday session makes him a risky start in a road game that starts at 1 p.m. ET. Managers who roster Jordan Addison should keep him in lineups either way; he would remain a weekly starter even with Jefferson back.

Monangai, Dowdle and the backfield calls

Monangai carried 30 times for 146 yards and two touchdowns in Chicago's 23-12 win over the Jets before leaving late with a thumb injury. Ben Johnson labeled him day to day, and the Chicago Sun-Times reported the injury is not considered serious. If he practices in any capacity Wednesday, he is an RB2 at Green Bay. If he is held out through Thursday, D'Andre Swift, who was benched after a third-quarter fumble, becomes the early-down favorite again. Roschon Johnson, who closed out the Jets game, is the deep-league handcuff.

In Pittsburgh, Dowdle missed a second straight game with the toe injury, and Jaylen Warren has run as the unquestioned lead back in his absence, totaling 220 rushing yards and 82 receiving yards over the last two games. The Steelers played on Thursday of Week 4, so Dowdle gets extra recovery time before hosting Indianapolis. Even if he returns, Warren has earned a lead or co-lead role and remains a confident RB2. Dowdle is a hold, not a start, until he logs a full practice.

Bengals receivers, McConkey and Love

Cincinnati's receiver situation was covered in full earlier this week, and nothing has changed beyond Zac Taylor's day-to-day label on Tee Higgins and the protocol steps still ahead for Ja'Marr Chase. Wednesday's report is the first real data point for both. If either is limited or better, the outlook improves sharply; if both are held out, Dohnte Meyers and Mitchell Tinsley remain the next men up, and Chase Brown and Mike Gesicki absorb more of Joe Burrow's targets.

Ladd McConkey was labeled day to day Monday after aggravating the foot injury that limited him earlier in the season. He played through it last week, so a limited Wednesday would be a normal pattern rather than a red flag. Jeremiyah Love reportedly tweaked his ankle in Week 4, and with Detroit coming to Arizona in the highest-total game of the Sunday slate, any practice limitation pushes him into flex territory rather than an every-week RB2.

Thursday night: Lamb is clear, Mayfield is not

Dallas and Tampa Bay are already two reports into their short week. CeeDee Lamb (thigh) was a full participant Monday and Tuesday, so he should be started without hesitation against the 0-4 Buccaneers. Guard Tyler Smith (thumb) was limited both days, while cornerback Cobie Durant, linebacker DeMarvion Overshown and tackle Drew Shelton did not participate. On the Tampa Bay side, Baker Mayfield (right thumb) did not participate again, which keeps Jalon Daniels under center, and safety Antoine Winfield Jr. (rib) and kicker Chase McLaughlin (groin/hip) also sat out. Linebacker Josiah Trotter (knee) improved from limited to full.

The Winfield absence is the fantasy angle worth noting: Tampa Bay's secondary is thinner on the back end against Dak Prescott, Lamb and George Pickens. A missing kicker also adds uncertainty to Tampa Bay's scoring, which matters for anyone streaming the Dallas defense.

The Verdexed angle and what comes next

The decision tree this week is about timing. Jackson plays Sunday night, so his managers need a plan before the 1 p.m. games lock. Jefferson, Monangai and Dowdle all play in the early window and will have Friday designations to go on. The highest-leverage move right now is to secure a backup quarterback if you roster Jackson and to grab Swift or Roschon Johnson as cover if you are relying on Monangai. For bettors, Baltimore's prices on Jackson's props and the Ravens-Falcons side should be treated as stale until his practice status is known.

Wednesday's reports land this afternoon, with Thursday and Friday updates to follow. Verdexed's game-level outlooks are on the NFL predictions page, and the full slate is broken down in NFL Week 5 picks. Check back Friday for final designations.
