Jalen Ramsey Has a Broken Wrist and Still Plans to Play Thursday in Cleveland

Jalen Ramsey confirmed this week that he broke his wrist on the first series of Sunday's game against the Bengals, and he still intends to play Thursday night in Cleveland. Ramsey played every defensive snap against Cincinnati anyway and finished with a season-high eight tackles, including one for a loss. He was seen in a sling early in the week, switched to a wrist brace for Tuesday's walkthrough and has been listed as limited on both of Pittsburgh's first two injury reports.

Ramsey has said he will try to play as long as he can protect the wrist. Head coach Mike McCarthy said he expects Ramsey to do everything he can to be on the field, pointing to the veteran's history of playing through injuries. The Steelers opened as 2.5-point road favorites with a total of 45.5, one of the lowest on the Week 4 board.

What a braced Ramsey means for the matchup

Ramsey is one of the most versatile defensive backs in the league, and Pittsburgh moves him between outside corner, the slot and safety. A broken wrist affects his ability to jam receivers at the line and finish tackles, and it could limit him to a more conservative role even if he is active.

The rest of the Steelers secondary is not fully healthy either. Cornerback Brandin Echols is in the concussion protocol and has been limited. Joey Porter Jr. was a full participant after being listed for a non-injury reason. If Ramsey and Echols both play at less than full strength, the Browns will look to test Pittsburgh's secondary more than they would in a normal week.

Rico Dowdle is trending toward another absence

On the other side of the ball, Rico Dowdle did not practice Monday or Tuesday because of his toe injury. The expectation is that he is still a couple of weeks away and will miss a second straight game. That keeps Jaylen Warren in the lead role in Pittsburgh's backfield.

Warren was the Week 3 volume play when Dowdle first went down, and his role should look the same on Thursday: most of the early-down work, the passing-down snaps and the goal-line chances. He is an RB2 in this spot and a stronger play in PPR leagues because of his receiving work. Thursday games with a total this low do limit the ceiling, so treat him as a floor play rather than a breakout candidate.

Cleveland's injury report

The Browns come off a win over Carolina with their own list of questions:

Center Elgton Jenkins is in the concussion protocol and did not practice. Head coach Todd Monken confirmed that Luke Wypler will start in his place, with Parker Brailsford as the backup.

Tackle Tytus Howard (knee) was limited.

Cornerback Tyson Campbell (knee) was limited, and the Browns are hopeful he returns after missing a week.

Safety Grant Delpit (shoulder) was limited.

Receiver Tylan Wallace (knee) did not practice.

There was good news on the offensive line, where Teven Jenkins returned to practice for the first time since hurting his back. A backup center against Pittsburgh's front is still a concern for Cleveland's offense in a short week.

Fantasy fallout

Jaylen Warren is a start in all formats. The volume makes him a solid RB2.

Steelers pass catchers get a mild upgrade if Campbell cannot return for Cleveland, but the low total caps the upside. Treat them as you normally would.

Browns pass catchers get a small bump if Ramsey is limited. With Wallace out, targets concentrate among fewer receivers.

Steelers D/ST is a reasonable streaming choice. Cleveland is starting a backup center, and short-week road favorites facing a patched-up line are a common streaming target.

The betting angle

A 45.5 total in a divisional Thursday game is priced low for a reason. Short weeks favor defenses, and a backup center facing Pittsburgh's front adds to that. Ramsey's status matters more to the spread than the total. If he is ruled out Thursday afternoon, the line could tick toward Cleveland.

Verdexed's pick for this game will be on the Week 4 card at /blog/nfl-week-4-picks-2026, and the model's probabilities for every game are on the NFL predictions page.

Why Ramsey's decision matters for the rest of the season

A broken wrist is not an injury that heals in four days. If Ramsey plays Thursday, he will be playing through it with a brace, and that likely continues for several weeks. That affects Pittsburgh's defense beyond this game, because a cornerback who cannot fully use one hand is limited in press coverage and in wrapping up ball carriers.

For fantasy managers in IDP leagues, Ramsey's tackle numbers could stay steady because he will still be around the ball. For everyone else, the takeaway is simple: upgrade the receivers facing Pittsburgh slightly until Ramsey is fully healthy, and watch how the Steelers use him on Thursday for clues about his role going forward.

What's next

Pittsburgh's final injury report on Wednesday will set Ramsey's designation. If he is questionable and practiced in the brace, expect him to play, but in a reduced role. Warren is the safe start either way. For Cleveland, keep an eye on Campbell's status, since his return would change how the Steelers attack the Browns secondary.
