Darren Waller Caught Two Touchdowns as Bryce Young Routed the Falcons 34-3

Bryce Young threw for 287 yards and three touchdowns, two of them to tight end Darren Waller, as Carolina routed Atlanta 34-3 on Sunday. Young completed 23 of 36 attempts and improved to 5-1 in his career against the Falcons. The Panthers moved to 1-1 and extended their winning streak in the division series to four games. Atlanta fell to 0-2 with Cooper Rush starting in place of an injured Michael Penix Jr.

For fantasy purposes, the headline is not the score. It is that two of the more productive players of Week 2 are sitting on waiver wires in a majority of leagues.

Waller is the add

Waller signed a one-year deal with Carolina on August 17, roughly three weeks before the season, after a summer that did not produce the offers a player of his résumé expected. He is 33, he spent last season in Miami where he caught six touchdowns in nine games, and at his peak in 2020 he led all tight ends in receptions and finished second in yardage.

On Sunday he caught two touchdowns. That is the number that matters at tight end, because the position is scored almost entirely by red-zone role. Tight ends who get eight targets and no scores finish as TE18 on a given week. Tight ends who get four targets and two scores finish as TE1. Waller just showed he is the preferred option inside the twenty in an offense that scored 34 points.

The counterargument is real: a 33-year-old tight end on a one-year deal signed weeks before the season is not usually the answer. But the counterargument was also real about the Panthers offense generally, and Young has now looked composed and in control for two consecutive weeks. Waller belongs on the roster of anyone streaming the position, and he belongs in the lineup of anyone who lost Dallas Goedert to a knee injury on Sunday.

Young is a genuine streamer

Young's development arc has been the most debated in the league, and Week 2 was the strongest single-game argument yet for the current version. Twenty-three of 36 for 287 yards and three touchdowns against a division opponent, with a 5-1 career record against that opponent, is a profile.

The schedule helps. Carolina opened Week 3 as a 2.5-point road favorite in Cleveland, juiced toward the higher end at that number, which means the market expects a game Carolina controls. Quarterbacks who are favored on the road and playing with a lead throw fewer times, which caps the ceiling, but Young has now produced without needing 45 attempts.

He is the best streaming quarterback available in most leagues that do not have Tyler Shough on the wire, and he is a better bet than the two backups who inherited jobs this weekend.

The Falcons are the fade

Atlanta has now scored 13 and 3 points in consecutive weeks with Cooper Rush starting in place of Penix. Two games, 16 total points, both losses. That is not a slow start. That is an offense without a functional passing game.

The fantasy implication runs in two directions. Atlanta's pass catchers are unstartable until the quarterback situation resolves, and the running back in this offense absorbs a disproportionate share of the remaining value simply because the team has no other way to move the ball. When a passing game collapses, the lead back's touch count usually holds even as the scoring opportunities dry up, which makes him a volume-based flex play rather than a weekly must-start.

The bigger point for bettors: Atlanta is now a public fade, and public fades get overpriced. Green Bay opened as a 7-point home favorite over Atlanta for Week 3, with the Packers priced around -325 on the moneyline and the Falcons returning about +260.

The Verdexed model take

Seven points is a lot for a team that just won in overtime and gained 145 passing yards to lay against any NFL opponent, even a 0-2 one.

Our framework here is about how markets treat blowouts. A 34-3 result produces an outsized adjustment in the following week's line because the margin is the most salient number available, and margin is a noisier predictor than most people believe. Atlanta was competitive for a half in Pittsburgh in Week 1. Sunday's game was decided by a quarterback who is not the starter, against a division rival with a quarterback playing his best football.

The Verdexed read on the Week 3 Green Bay number is that it is a point too high. Green Bay is a good team that does not blow opponents out; they needed overtime and a rookie kicker to beat the Jets, and Jordan Love finished with 145 passing yards. A short favorite laying a touchdown against a team with a backup quarterback has a specific failure mode: the favorite wins by four and the bettor loses by three.

If Penix returns to practice this week, that number should move toward six and the value shifts further. Watch the Wednesday report.

What to do in your league

Add Waller in every format where tight end is a weekly question, which is most of them. He is the highest-leverage cheap add on this week's board because the position is so thin that one touchdown-dependent starter with a confirmed red-zone role swings your weekly floor.

Stream Young if you need a quarterback and Shough is gone. The matchup, the form, and the price all line up.

Bench Atlanta pass catchers until there is a quarterback answer. Two weeks, 16 points, and a backup under center is enough evidence to stop guessing.

And on the Carolina side, do not overcorrect the other way. A 34-3 win over a 0-2 team with a fill-in quarterback is a good result, not a transformation. Buy Waller because the role is real. Be more careful about paying full price for the rest of this offense in trade.
