Jalen Hurts Is Out for the Season: The Fantasy Fallout for Tanner McKee, Saquon Barkley, DeVonta Smith and Dallas Goedert
By Verdexed Fantasy Desk

The Philadelphia Eagles' season changed shape on Monday. The team and Jalen Hurts' agent, Nicole Lynn, disclosed that the quarterback has been diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis and bilateral pulmonary emboli, meaning blood clots have reached both lungs. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that treatment with blood thinners is expected to keep him off the field for at least three months, which effectively ends his 2026 season. The Associated Press, citing a source, also reported that Hurts is expected to miss the rest of the year.
The team said Hurts is clinically stable, has no significant functional limitations and is expected to make a full recovery with no long-term effects. He cannot take part in football activities while he is on anticoagulants, and he could return to contact football only once he is off them. Tanner McKee, who started the Week 6 loss to Carolina, is now the Eagles' quarterback for the foreseeable future, and Philadelphia (2-4, losers of four straight) hosts Dallas on Monday Night Football in Week 7.
How a calf injury became a season-ending diagnosis
Verdexed covered Saturday's move to injured reserve, when the problem was still described as a superficial clot in the calf. Monday's diagnosis is a different and far more serious condition. The timeline, as reported by the team and multiple outlets, runs back almost three weeks.
| Date | Event |
|---|---|
| Oct. 4 | Hurts takes a cleat to the calf area in the loss to the Rams |
| Oct. 8 | Hurts tells the team about the issue, per reports |
| London trip | Specialists diagnose a left calf superficial vein thrombosis; Hurts plays every snap of the 19-17 loss to Jacksonville |
| Week 6 week | A follow-up ultrasound shows the clot moved; Hurts is ruled out for Carolina |
| Oct. 17 | Eagles place Hurts on injured reserve |
| Oct. 19 | Team announces deep vein thrombosis with bilateral pulmonary emboli |
Nick Sirianni was the only team official available to reporters on Monday, and he largely deflected questions about how the situation was handled. He declined to explain why Hurts was allowed to fly home from London with a known clot, telling reporters he is not a medical expert and that he trusts the people involved in those decisions. For fantasy and betting purposes, the key answer is settled: Hurts will not play in 2026.
Philadelphia's quarterback plan
McKee is the starter. In his first start of the season against Carolina, he completed 26 of 45 passes for 215 yards and a touchdown with no interceptions in a 25-14 loss. Reviews were mixed. He avoided turnovers and kept the offense functional behind a patchwork line, but 4.8 yards per attempt is the profile of a quarterback who is managing games rather than winning them.
Behind him, the room is thin. Rookie Cole Payton served as the backup in Week 6, and ESPN's transaction log shows the Eagles signed Joe Milton to the active roster off Dallas' practice squad on Oct. 16. Andy Dalton, released on Oct. 9 as part of the roster crunch around Lane Johnson's retirement, reportedly declined an offer to return, per Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio.
| Quarterback | How he got here | Current role |
|---|---|---|
| Tanner McKee | 2023 sixth-round pick | Starter |
| Joe Milton | Signed off Cowboys practice squad Oct. 16 | Backup |
| Cole Payton | 2026 draft pick | Backup |
| Andy Dalton | Released Oct. 9 | Reportedly declined return |
As of Wednesday, there is no credible report tying the Eagles to an outside starter via trade or free agency. The trade deadline is Nov. 10, and Howie Roseman has never been shy, but a 2-4 team that just lost its franchise quarterback is a more natural seller than buyer. Fantasy managers should plan as if McKee starts every remaining game unless that changes.
Saquon Barkley: injury first, trade risk second
Barkley has missed the last two games with the right hamstring strain he suffered against the Rams on Oct. 4, and NFL Network described him as week-to-week at the time. His Week 7 status will start to come into focus when the Eagles release their first practice report for the Monday game. Without him, Dameon Pierce led the backfield against Carolina with 12 carries for 35 yards and a touchdown, with Will Shipley on injured reserve and Jaydon Blue promoted from the practice squad.
The bigger long-term question is whether Barkley finishes the season in Philadelphia. On Oct. 17, before the Hurts diagnosis, The Athletic's Jonathan Jones reported that some executives around the league had floated the idea of the Eagles trading him. That is chatter, not a report of active talks, and no deal is close as far as anyone has reported. But the Hurts news makes the logic of selling stronger, not weaker.
For fantasy, Barkley is a hold everywhere. If he returns healthy, he is still the most talented player in the offense and will get volume with or without Hurts. What changes is efficiency. Hurts' rushing threat and the quarterback sneak shaped the Eagles' goal-line usage for years, and McKee does not bring that. Treat him as an RB2 with RB1 weeks when he is cleared, and accept that a trade to a contender would likely be good for his value.
DeVonta Smith, Dallas Goedert and the passing game
The most encouraging fantasy data point from Week 6 is that McKee threw 45 times and leaned on his best receiver. DeVonta Smith, back from a two-game hamstring absence, caught seven of 14 targets for 75 yards and a 19-yard fourth-quarter touchdown. Dallas Goedert caught six of eight targets for 61 yards. Rookie Makai Lemon caught three of six for 19.
| Eagles pass catcher | Week 6 targets | Catches | Yards | TD |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DeVonta Smith | 14 | 7 | 75 | 1 |
| Dallas Goedert | 8 | 6 | 61 | 0 |
| Makai Lemon | 6 | 3 | 19 | 0 |
DeVonta Smith is the clear winner of a McKee offense. With A.J. Brown traded to New England in June, Smith is the only established outside receiver in the room, and a team that trails often will throw often. Efficiency will dip, but a double-digit target floor keeps him a weekly WR2 in PPR formats.
Dallas Goedert is a back-end TE1. Backup quarterbacks tend to live in the short middle of the field, and Goedert's eight targets fit that pattern. He also carries some trade-deadline risk if Philadelphia sells veterans.
Tanner McKee himself is a superflex and two-quarterback streamer, not a one-quarterback starter. Volume gives him a floor in deeper formats; the lack of rushing caps his ceiling.
Jalen Hurts should be dropped in redraft leagues without an injured reserve slot. In dynasty, his long-term value is intact, given the team's expectation of a full recovery.
The Verdexed angle
The cleanest way to read this offense is concentration. With Hurts out, the Eagles lose their best runner as well as their passer, which pushes more of the offense through the air and through two players: Smith and Goedert. That is a good thing for their fantasy volume and a bad thing for the Eagles' scoreboard. Running backs lose the most, because the read-option and short-yardage advantages Hurts created are gone.
The betting market has already reacted. Per Sports Illustrated's betting desk, Philadelphia's Super Bowl price drifted from +4000 to +15000 over the two weeks since the injury surfaced, the Eagles are +550 to win the NFC East at DraftKings, now fourth-best in the division, and +460 to make the playoffs. Opening Week 7 numbers compiled by Dimers listed Dallas as a 4.5-point road favorite at Lincoln Financial Field, a striking line for a 2-4 visitor. Verdexed's game-by-game view of Cowboys at Eagles lives at /nfl/predictions, and the full slate is at /blog/nfl-week-7-picks-2026.
Our read: the market has priced in the quarterback downgrade, but the bigger risk to the Eagles' season is organizational. A front office facing a lost year has every incentive to listen on Barkley, Goedert and expiring contracts before Nov. 10, and fantasy managers should value those players accordingly.
What's next
The Eagles host the Cowboys on Monday, Oct. 26 at 8:15 p.m. ET on ESPN. Watch three things this week. First, Barkley's practice participation, which decides whether Pierce remains a desperation flex. Second, any quarterback addition beyond Milton, which would signal how committed the team is to McKee. Third, any Barkley or Goedert trade talk before Nov. 10. For now, start Smith, hold Barkley and treat McKee as a deep-league streamer.
