Darius Acuff Jr. scored 25 points on Monday night as the Sacramento Kings beat the Dallas Mavericks 115-100 for their first win of the season. Sacramento was the last team in the NBA without a victory, and its rookie guard has been the bright spot through a brutal opening stretch. Acuff added six assists and five rebounds in 37 minutes, shooting 10 of 21 from the floor after a slow first half.

For fantasy managers, the question is no longer whether Acuff is worth a roster spot. It is whether he belongs in your starting lineup every night. The answer, right now, is yes.

The opening stretch

Acuff, a lottery pick in June's draft, has been one of the most productive rookies in the league. Through his first six games he was averaging 26.3 points, 6.3 assists and 3.7 rebounds, and he leads his rookie class in scoring. He reached 150 career points in the second-fastest time in NBA history, according to reports, and was nominated for the Western Conference Player of the Week award.

His signature game came against Memphis, when he scored 38 and made 9 of 14 three-pointers, tying the NBA's single-game rookie record for threes. He also scored 34 against New Orleans.

What the numbers say about his role

The scoring average is not a fluke of a weak opponent or garbage time. Acuff is playing heavy minutes and handling the ball often, and coach Doug Christie praised his ability to recover from a poor start on Monday. He had only six points at halftime before taking over in the second half.

The one weakness in his profile is efficiency. His three-point shooting was 32.2 percent through six games, inflated by the Memphis night and weighed down by several cold games. That makes him streaky, and in category leagues, a high-volume, inconsistent shooter can hurt your field goal percentage. In points leagues, that matters much less.

The Kings' context

Sacramento has three strong scoring options: Acuff, Malik Monk (24 on Monday) and Zach LaVine (23). That gives Acuff better spacing than many rookie guards get, and it also means defenses cannot focus on him alone. The concern is usage competition. If LaVine and Monk both stay hot, Acuff's shot volume could level off.

The other variable is the Kings' standing. A team that started the season without a win has every incentive to give its rookie as many minutes and touches as possible. That development-first approach is good news for Acuff's fantasy value even if it is bad news for the team's win total.

Fantasy verdict

Points leagues: Acuff is a must-start. Scoring volume, assists and minutes give him a high floor, and his ceiling is a 35-point night any time he gets hot from deep.

Category leagues: He is a strong start but not a sure thing. His points, threes and assists are elite for a rookie; his field goal percentage and turnovers are the risks. Pair him with efficient big men to balance him out.

Dynasty leagues: If he is available on your waiver wire, he should not be. Acuff's early production suggests he is already one of the best long-term guard assets from his draft class.

DFS: His salary will rise after this start. When it does, he becomes more of a tournament play, since his inconsistent shooting makes him risky in cash games.

The betting angle

Rookie scoring props often lag behind performance early in the season, and books will be adjusting Acuff's numbers after this start. When he faces teams that struggle against guards, his points prop is worth watching, though his three-point variance means unders on his threes can also hit in a cold game.

For the Kings, one win does not change their outlook, but it shows a path. With three capable scorers, Sacramento can win shootouts against teams that do not defend the perimeter well. What's next

Acuff's next few weeks will show whether teams adjust to him. Expect opponents to send more help at him as the scouting report spreads, which could cool his scoring but raise his assist numbers. Either way, his role is secure. Start him in points leagues, start him in most category leagues, and hold him tightly in dynasty.
