Week 6 is the first real squeeze of the fantasy season. Cincinnati, Detroit, Miami and Minnesota are all on bye, which takes Ja'Marr Chase, Joe Burrow, Jared Goff and Justin Jefferson out of lineups at once, and the injury report around the league is unusually crowded. The calls below cover the Sunday slate and lean on roles that are confirmed, not hoped for.

The headline starts: Rhamondre Stevenson against the Jets, Jonathan Taylor against winless Tennessee, and Kirk Cousins as a streamer against Buffalo. The headline sits: Justin Herbert at Kansas City and Jacoby Brissett at the Rams.

Managers who lost a quarterback to the bye have usable options on the waiver wire this week, and the matchups below favor a couple of them. Managers missing Chase or Jefferson should prioritize volume over name value at receiver.

Quarterbacks

Start Kirk Cousins (LV) vs. Buffalo. Cousins is the Raiders' starter, and his Week 5 line against New England (243 yards and a touchdown) was his worst game of the season. Buffalo's defense has allowed 26.8 points per game, the eighth-most in the league, and the Bills-Raiders total sits in the low 50s at most books. Las Vegas should be throwing in the second half. He is a streamer with a real floor in a bye week.

Start Jameis Winston (NYG) vs. New Orleans. Winston is starting in place of the injured Jaxson Dart, and the Saints are among the teams sliding the fastest in league-wide power rankings. Winston's aggressive style produces both points and turnovers, which in fantasy is a fine trade at QB2.

Sit Justin Herbert (LAC) at Kansas City. The Chargers are 0-5, and Herbert has five touchdowns, seven interceptions and a 59.4 percent completion rate. He is working behind a line without Rashawn Slater (injured reserve), against a Chiefs team coming off its bye as an 8.5-point favorite. The total of 42.5 does not suggest a shootout.

Sit Jacoby Brissett (ARI) at the Rams. Brissett's QB4 finish in Week 5 came against a Detroit defense that has struggled badly. Arizona just traded Marvin Harrison Jr. to Houston, and the Cardinals are 12.5- to 13.5-point road underdogs. Garbage time is the only path to a big game, and it is not one to bet a lineup on.

Sit Jalen Hurts (PHI) vs. Carolina, in shallow leagues. The Eagles are 2-3, Saquon Barkley and DeVonta Smith are both trying to come back from hamstring injuries, and the spread is only 1 to 1.5 points. If both return and practice fully, Hurts moves back into the QB1 conversation. Until then, he is a ceiling-limited start.

Running backs

Start Rhamondre Stevenson (NE) vs. the Jets. TreVeyon Henderson has a high-ankle sprain, and Stevenson had already been the lead back even with Henderson available. New England is a 7.5-point favorite over a Jets offense with one of the lowest implied totals on the slate. Positive game script plus a near-workhorse role makes him an RB2 with RB1 upside.

Start Jonathan Taylor (IND) vs. Tennessee. Taylor was held to 45 yards on 15 carries by Pittsburgh in Week 5, a season low. The Titans are 0-5, and the Colts are 6.5- to 7-point home favorites. Expect a bounce back in volume and efficiency.

Start Bucky Irving (TB) vs. Pittsburgh. Irving turned 23 touches into 175 yards and two touchdowns against Dallas, including 165 rushing yards. One explosive game does not erase a slow start, but the role is clearly growing. He is a confident RB2 at home.

Start Woody Marks (HOU) in London. David Montgomery (groin) is week-to-week and DeMeco Ryans said Marks will carry the load. Marks played 56 of 65 snaps in Week 5 and handled 19 touches.

Sit D'Andre Swift (CHI) at Atlanta, if Caleb Williams sits. Swift led Chicago with just nine carries for 43 yards in a 31-7 loss to Green Bay. With Tyson Bagent at quarterback the offense has struggled to sustain drives, which caps the backfield. If Williams is cleared, Swift moves back to flex range.

Wide receivers and tight ends

Start Puka Nacua (LAR) vs. Arizona. He caught 17 of 24 targets on Monday night. Nothing more needs to be said about the role.

Start Germie Bernard (PIT) at Tampa Bay, as a flex. With Michael Pittman Jr. and Roman Wilson sidelined in Week 5, Bernard led Pittsburgh with 10 targets. If either veteran remains out, Bernard is a viable flex in a bye week.

Start Tetairoa McMillan (CAR) at Philadelphia. McMillan entered the week with 385 receiving yards through four games and Carolina is fresh off its Week 5 bye. The Eagles have lost three straight and are thin across the roster.

Start Dallas Goedert (PHI) vs. Carolina. Goedert has been one of the few consistent pieces in the Eagles' passing game, and with Smith's status unclear he is the safest target Hurts has.

Sit Luther Burden III (CHI) at Atlanta. His role depends on who plays quarterback, and the Atlanta matchup has been flagged as a difficult one for Chicago's receivers. Keep him benched until Williams is confirmed.

Sit Brian Thomas Jr. (JAX) in London. Six targets across his last three games, and Parker Washington has taken over as Trevor Lawrence's top option. This is a usage problem, not a talent problem, and usage wins in a bye week.

Defense streamers

Start the Patriots D/ST vs. the Jets. New England allows 18.8 points per game, fourth fewest in the league, and Jets quarterback Geno Smith has been sacked at least three times in four straight games.

Start the Texans D/ST in London. Will Anderson Jr. had three sacks against Tennessee, and Jacksonville is replacing injured left tackle Anton Harrison with Walker Little.

The Verdexed angle

The theme of these calls is that bye-week lineups should be built on certainty of role. Stevenson, Taylor, Marks and Nacua have confirmed workloads in favorable game scripts; Herbert, Brissett and Thomas have roles or environments that cap their ceilings. For bettors, the same logic applies to player props: volume backs like Stevenson and Taylor tend to be priced off their season averages, and their Week 6 game scripts are friendlier than those averages.

What's next

Wednesday's first full practice reports will settle several of these calls. The most important names: Caleb Williams (a return lifts every Bears pass catcher), Saquon Barkley and DeVonta Smith (a return lifts Hurts), Lamar Jackson (Baltimore opened the week as a 3.5- to 4.5-point favorite in Cleveland) and Michael Penix Jr., who is reportedly expected to play through a rib injury. Set the confirmed starts now and leave the questionable spots for Friday's final reports.
