Tyrese Haliburton Will Miss at Least Two Weeks With a Hamstring Strain, and Andrew Nembhard Becomes a Must-Roster Point Guard

Tyrese Haliburton's comeback season has hit its first setback. The Indiana Pacers guard has a mild left hamstring strain and will miss at least two weeks, ESPN's Shams Charania reported on Wednesday. Head coach Rick Carlisle confirmed the diagnosis and described Haliburton as week to week, which makes two weeks a minimum rather than a return date.

Haliburton, who missed the entire 2025-26 season after tearing his right Achilles tendon, was averaging 21.8 points and 9.5 assists through four games. Indiana lost its first game without him, 114-109 at home to Philadelphia on Wednesday, after leading by 13 entering the fourth quarter.

The injury and the timeline

A hamstring strain is a different category of concern than the Achilles injury Haliburton spent a year rehabbing, and Carlisle's use of the word "mild" is encouraging. Still, hamstrings are notorious for lingering and for re-injury if a player returns too soon, and the Pacers have every reason to be conservative with a franchise player who just completed a long recovery.

A realistic expectation is a re-evaluation in about two weeks, with a return somewhere between mid- and late November. That would cost Haliburton roughly six to ten games depending on the schedule.

Nembhard's first audition

Andrew Nembhard was listed as questionable with neck soreness before Wednesday's game but played and took over full-time point guard duties. He finished with 18 points and 14 assists, the type of line that makes him an immediate pickup in standard leagues. Kelly Oubre Jr. moved into the starting lineup in Haliburton's place.

Pascal Siakam led Indiana with 26 points and 11 rebounds, and he figures to see more usage while Haliburton is out. The fourth-quarter collapse, though, showed the problem with the Pacers' thinned-out backcourt: Tyrese Maxey scored 17 points in the final frame for Philadelphia, and Indiana did not have an answer on either end.

Fantasy fallout

Andrew Nembhard: add him now. He becomes the primary playmaker and should see significant minutes for at least two weeks. Assists are the scarcest category he provides, and his 14-assist debut in the role shows the ceiling. He is a strong pickup in all formats with roster space.

Pascal Siakam: bump him up. Siakam's usage rises with Haliburton out. Expect more scoring volume and more ball-handling responsibility in the half court. He was already a must-start; he now carries a slightly higher ceiling.

Kelly Oubre Jr.: deep-league streamer. The starting role gives him minutes, which matter for points, rebounds and steals. He is a short-term add in deeper leagues and points formats.

Quenton Jackson and T.J. McConnell: monitor. Jackson is the next man up as a ballhandler. McConnell's return from his own hamstring injury would eat into Jackson's minutes and some of Nembhard's playmaking, so McConnell's status is worth tracking.

Haliburton managers: hold. Do not drop him. A two-to-four-week absence is well within the range where an elite assist producer recovers his value over a full season. If your league has an injured-list slot, use it.

Betting angle

Indiana's market will adjust quickly. Haliburton is the engine of the Pacers' pace and offensive efficiency, and without him the team leans more heavily on Siakam and half-court play. That combination tends to lower game totals. Pacers unders are worth considering until the team shows it can sustain its offense, and Nembhard's assist props will likely move higher after Wednesday's line.

The spread effect is real, too. The loss to Philadelphia showed how quickly a lead can evaporate without a primary closer, and fourth-quarter execution is the area where a team misses its star most.

Why the Achilles history matters

Haliburton's previous injury is the context that makes this one worth handling carefully. He spent all of last season rehabbing a torn right Achilles, and his early-season production (21.8 points and 9.5 assists per game) suggested he had returned close to his previous level. A hamstring strain on the opposite side of his body is not directly related, but players returning from a long layoff often deal with soft-tissue issues as their bodies readjust to the load of an NBA schedule.

That is why the Pacers are unlikely to rush him. Indiana's season is long, and the team's priority is having Haliburton healthy in the spring, not in mid-November. Fantasy managers should plan accordingly: the two-week minimum is a floor, and a return closer to three or four weeks would not be surprising.

There is also a schedule element. Early-season back-to-backs are where teams are most cautious with players returning from soft-tissue injuries, so even after Haliburton is cleared, expect the Pacers to manage his minutes and rest him on the second night of back-to-backs for a stretch. That affects weekly lineup planning in head-to-head leagues.

The Verdexed model take

Verdexed's NBA model accounts for player availability in its game predictions, so Haliburton's absence will be built into Indiana's projections for as long as he is out. The model's daily picks are published on the NBA predictions page and in the backend's daily NBA picks pieces on the blog.

What's next

The next checkpoint is Haliburton's re-evaluation in about two weeks. Until then, Indiana is Nembhard's team to run, with Siakam as the primary scorer. Fantasy managers should prioritize Nembhard on the waiver wire, hold Haliburton, and watch for McConnell's return as the signal that the Pacers' guard rotation is stabilizing.
