Paolo Banchero Is Out Four to Six Weeks and Jalen Suggs Hurts His Knee, but Franz Wagner's Fourth Quarter Drops the Knicks to 0-3
By Verdexed NBA Desk

Franz Wagner scored 21 of his 23 points in the fourth quarter on Sunday as the Orlando Magic beat the New York Knicks 111-102 at Madison Square Garden, dropping the defending champions to 0-3. It was the first win of Sean Sweeney's tenure as Orlando's head coach, but it came at a cost: Jalen Suggs was helped to the locker room with a right knee injury with 2:09 remaining, and the Magic were already without Paolo Banchero, who is expected to miss four to six weeks with a right high ankle sprain, according to ESPN's Shams Charania.
For fantasy managers, Orlando now has two starters out or in question, and New York has a slow start that is starting to look like a trend.
The injuries
Banchero's injury is defined: a Grade 1 high ankle sprain with a four-to-six-week timeline, putting a return somewhere in the second half of November. High ankle sprains can linger, so managers should plan for the longer end of that window.
Suggs is the open question. His right knee appeared to buckle on a layup attempt late in the fourth quarter, and Sweeney offered little information afterward. There was no confirmed diagnosis Sunday night, and imaging is the next step. Suggs has a history of knee injuries, including arthroscopic surgery on his left knee in 2025 and a Grade 1 MCL contusion in his right knee in January, which adds uncertainty to any timeline.
| Player | Team | Injury | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paolo Banchero | ORL | Right high ankle sprain | Out 4 to 6 weeks |
| Jalen Suggs | ORL | Right knee | Awaiting imaging |
| Anthony Black | ORL | Ankle | Returned Sunday, 18 points |
Franz Wagner's fourth quarter
Wagner finished with 23 points, 13 rebounds and nine assists, a near triple-double built almost entirely in the final 12 minutes. That line is the clearest picture yet of what his role looks like without Banchero: he is the primary creator, the closer and a significant rebounder. His fantasy value rises across every category while Banchero is out, and he should be valued as a top-30 player in that stretch.
Anthony Black is the add
Anthony Black returned from an ankle injury and scored 18 points. If Suggs misses time, Black becomes the starting guard next to Wagner with a heavy ballhandling load. He is the top waiver add from this game and should be rostered in 12-team leagues now, before Suggs' diagnosis comes back. If Suggs is fine, Black still has a bigger role than usual with Banchero out.
Orlando's frontcourt may also see changes in usage, but the clearest fantasy shifts are on the wing and in the backcourt.
The Knicks at 0-3
New York became the first defending champion to start 0-3 since the 2011-12 Dallas Mavericks. Earlier in the week, Verdexed noted Mikal Bridges' shooting slump in the loss to Boston, and the Knicks have now lost to Philadelphia, Boston and a short-handed Orlando team.
Three games is not a season, and a team with a championship core is not going to stay winless for long. But fantasy managers should note that New York's offense has not found a rhythm, and the slow start is hurting players whose value depends on efficiency.
What changes for Orlando's rotation
Without Banchero and possibly without Suggs, Sweeney's rotation shortens. Wagner becomes the clear first option, Black takes on primary ballhandling, and the Magic will need more scoring from their bench. In category leagues, this kind of consolidation is valuable, because the players who remain absorb the shots, rebounds and assists that the injured players leave behind.
Wagner's near triple-double in this game is the clearest example. His rebound and assist totals both rose sharply, which suggests his role is expanding in more than one category. Managers who drafted him as a scorer should now value him as a multi-category contributor.
The question is sustainability. Banchero's return in late November will push Wagner back toward a secondary role, so managers looking to trade him should do it while his numbers are at their peak.
The betting angle
Orlando's win is a reminder that a team missing its best player can still compete when a co-star like Wagner takes over. The Magic's spreads should widen while Banchero is out, which can create value on them as underdogs in the right matchups, particularly if Suggs avoids a serious injury.
The Knicks are the reverse case. A defending champion at 0-3 will be priced on reputation for a while, and the market may be slow to adjust. For the model's view of upcoming Magic and Knicks games, see the NBA predictions page and the daily picks piece at /blog/nba-picks-2026-10-26.
What to do in your league
Add: Anthony Black in all 12-team leagues.
Upgrade: Franz Wagner, who should be a top-30 producer while Banchero is out.
Hold: Banchero through the injury. A four-to-six-week absence is not a reason to drop a franchise player.
Wait: Suggs. Hold him until imaging results arrive, then decide.
Do not panic: Knicks starters. Bench a struggling shooter only if you have a clear replacement.
Check the report: Orlando's injury designations before each game. Suggs' imaging and Black's ankle will decide how the minutes are split over the next two weeks, and a late scratch is the most common way to lose a night in daily leagues.
