Anthony Edwards Needs Knee Surgery and Could Miss Two Months: The Fantasy Fallout for LaMelo Ball, Ayo Dosunmu and the Timberwolves

Minnesota Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards will undergo an arthroscopic procedure on his right knee Thursday and could miss up to two months, ESPN's Shams Charania reported Tuesday. Team sources are hopeful he returns sometime in December, though other reporting has pointed to January, and the club expects a firmer timeline once the procedure is done.

The news lands days after Edwards scored 47 points in a 127-125 overtime loss at Cleveland, a game he played through a knee issue. According to reports, he tweaked the knee in the season opener in Miami, and an MRI revealed the need for a cleanup. The Timberwolves had listed him as questionable for Wednesday's game against the Golden State Warriors before the surgery news broke.

For fantasy managers, this is the first major injury of the season to a first-round pick. The Edwards roster spot is a hold, but the more urgent question is who replaces his production.

What we know about the injury

The details are limited, and it is worth being precise. Reporting so far has described an arthroscopic procedure to clean up the knee. It has not established a torn ligament, a meniscus repair, or any other structural diagnosis, and the difference matters: a cleanup typically has a far shorter recovery than a repair. Edwards also dealt with recurring patellofemoral pain (runner's knee) last season, which is why the knee will be monitored closely after he returns.

The working range for fantasy purposes:

ScenarioReturn window
Optimistic (team sources)December
Conservative (other reporting)January
Reported ceilingUp to two months

The usage vacuum

Edwards is one of the highest-usage players in the league. Removing him frees up a huge volume of shots, touches and late-clock possessions, and no single Timberwolf can absorb all of it. Expect a committee, with one clear lead creator.

LaMelo Ball is the primary beneficiary. Coverage of Minnesota's options has treated him as the player most capable of running the offense, and the small sample of possessions he has played without Edwards this season has been encouraging. His assist numbers should rise immediately, and his scoring floor climbs with more shot attempts. Upgrade him to a must-start in every format.

Ayo Dosunmu is the likeliest replacement in the starting lineup. He is the closest physical approximation to Edwards on the roster, and he has a track record of big scoring nights when Minnesota's guards have been depleted, including a 43-point playoff game last season. He is the top add from this news in standard leagues.

Jaden McDaniels and Jonathan Kuminga should see their usage rise as secondary scorers. McDaniels in particular brings defensive stats that pair well with a scoring bump, which makes him a stronger category-league play than his points totals suggest.

Bones Hyland and Terrence Shannon Jr. are the bench guards who will absorb extra minutes. Hyland's shooting volume makes him a deep-league and DFS value option on nights when he plays 25-plus minutes; Shannon is more of a points-league dart throw.

What to do in your league

Edwards managers: Hold him. An injured reserve slot is the right spot if your league has one. Do not sell a first-round talent at a discount for a procedure that may cost six to eight weeks.

Add: Dosunmu is the top pickup. Hyland is a deeper-league add.

Start with confidence: Ball moves up in every format. McDaniels moves up in category leagues.

DFS: Ball becomes one of the most attractive mid-priced guards on Minnesota slates, especially before salaries fully adjust.

Betting angle

Edwards' absence is the kind of injury the market prices immediately on game lines but more slowly in futures. Minnesota's season win total, playoff odds and title price will all take a hit; the question is whether the drop is proportionate to a six-to-eight-week absence, which is roughly a quarter of the season.

Player props are where early value tends to appear. Ball's points and assists lines and Dosunmu's scoring lines may be set conservatively for the first game or two before books catch up to the new roles. DFS and points-league notes

Edwards' absence creates the kind of salary inefficiency that DFS players hunt for. Dosunmu and Hyland will likely carry salaries set for bench roles in Minnesota's first game without Edwards, and both could play starter minutes. Ball's salary will rise quickly, so the window to roster him at a discount is short.

The bigger picture for Minnesota

The Timberwolves started the season unbeaten before the Cleveland loss, and their depth gives them a better chance than most teams to tread water without their best player. The concern is the West: Minnesota cannot afford a long slide while Edwards recovers if it wants to avoid the play-in.

The positive spin is that a December return would leave Edwards more than half the season to rebuild momentum. For fantasy managers, the timeline is long enough to make the pickups above worthwhile and short enough to make holding Edwards the obvious call.

What's next

The procedure is Thursday, and Minnesota should provide a clearer timeline shortly after. Until then, act on what is known: Ball runs the offense, Dosunmu starts, and Edwards stashes. The first test comes Wednesday against Golden State.
