Red Wings Suspend Dylan Larkin Without Pay After He Refuses to Play Until Traded: What It Means for Detroit's Lineup and Fantasy Rosters

The Detroit Red Wings suspended Dylan Larkin without pay on Thursday after the center declined to report for the team's game against Chicago. Interim general manager Shawn Horcoff said Larkin's agent informed the club that Larkin would not be coming to the rink and no longer wanted to be part of the organization. The suspension will hold until a trade is completed, and it costs Larkin more than $41,000 a day.

Detroit then went out and beat the Blackhawks 4-1, with Viktor Arvidsson scoring the sixth hat trick of his career and adding an assist. For fantasy managers with Larkin on their roster, the question is no longer whether he plays well in Detroit. It is when, and where, he plays at all.

How it got here

Larkin requested a trade in June. Detroit stripped him of the captaincy before training camp and, at one point earlier this season, placed him on non-roster injured reserve while the request remained unresolved. ESPN reported that Larkin initially gave the Red Wings three teams he would waive his no-trade protection to join: the Minnesota Wild, the Florida Panthers and the Vegas Golden Knights. Later reporting referred to a list of 10 approved destinations. ESPN also reported that he is not looking to be traded to a Canadian team.

The Red Wings have not found a deal they like. Horcoff said any trade must have Larkin's approval and also be in Detroit's best interest and support the organization's long-term goals. Larkin's agent, Pat Brisson, said his client has had enough of the situation.

Fantasy fallout: Larkin's value is frozen

Until a trade happens, Larkin produces nothing. In leagues with IR slots, a suspended player usually cannot be placed there, so managers are holding a zero in an active roster spot. That is the immediate cost.

The longer-term value depends on the destination. Every reported team would put him in a different role. In Minnesota, he would slot in as a top-six center alongside elite wingers. In Florida, he would likely play behind the established top two centers, which caps his ice time and power-play role. In Vegas, the fit depends on the rest of the lineup. A trade to a team where he centers a top line and the first power-play unit is the outcome that restores his fantasy value.

The practical guidance: hold Larkin in leagues with deep benches, because a trade could happen any day and he would immediately return to a significant role. In shallow leagues, the roster spot may be worth more than a player with no timeline.

Detroit without its best center

Detroit's center depth changes overnight. Arvidsson's hat trick showed that the Red Wings can still score, but the top-line center role and the first power-play unit are now open. The players who absorb Larkin's minutes, especially at five-on-four, are the immediate fantasy beneficiaries.

Watch Detroit's next morning skate and line combinations closely. Whoever takes Larkin's place between the top wingers becomes a speculative add, and the power-play quarterback role matters as much as even-strength placement for fantasy scoring.

Arvidsson himself is worth a look in deeper leagues. A hat trick is a one-game result, but a veteran winger getting top-six minutes on a team that just lost its best forward has a clearer path to production than he did a week ago.

The goaltending and team angle

Detroit's ability to win without Larkin will be tested over a longer stretch. Teams that lose a top center often see their shot generation drop at even strength, which matters for opposing goalies in fantasy: Detroit's opponents may become more attractive goalie streaming targets until the lineup stabilizes.

The Verdexed angle

The market will treat Detroit as a weaker team without Larkin, and in the medium term, it is. But short-term results can surprise, as Thursday showed. The value in Red Wings markets usually appears after a few games, once the lineup's real level is clear and the initial reaction has faded.

What to do in your league

Hold Larkin in deep leagues and bench-heavy formats; a trade restores his value immediately. Consider dropping him in shallow leagues where the roster spot matters more. Add Detroit's new top-line center once line combinations confirm who it is. Look at Arvidsson in deeper leagues. And track the three originally reported suitors, Minnesota, Florida and Vegas, because any of them could move quickly if the price drops.
