Rashee Rice Sits Out With a Hamstring and Xavier Worthy Becomes Kansas City's Lead Receiver Against the Chargers

Rashee Rice did not practice Wednesday as the Kansas City Chiefs began preparing for Sunday's Week 6 home game against the Los Angeles Chargers, and he was the only player the team held out. Rice injured his hamstring in the first quarter of the Oct. 4 win over the Raiders, leaving after a short catch and not returning. Andy Reid said Rice was feeling pretty good but would not commit to him practicing Thursday or Friday, and he described the timeline in loose terms: it could be a week, it could be two.

That leaves Kansas City short at receiver for a second straight week. Tyquan Thornton dislocated his ankle in Week 4 and is on injured reserve with a recovery that reports put in the range of 12 to 16 weeks. The Chiefs signed veteran Justin Watson to the practice squad as depth, a clear sign of how thin the room has become.

Reading the Rice tea leaves

There are two ways to look at this. The optimistic read is that Kansas City did not place Rice on injured reserve, which would have cost him at least four games, and Reid's description of the injury has been consistently mild. Some reports have characterized the strain as relatively minor.

The pessimistic read is that a receiver who cannot practice on Wednesday of a normal week rarely ends up playing a full complement of snaps on Sunday, and Kansas City has every reason to be careful with its most important wideout. Several local reports this week described Rice as unlikely to play against the Chargers. The Chiefs' Thursday and Friday reports will settle it, but fantasy managers should plan for Rice to sit.

There was good news on the injury front for the Chiefs: left tackle Josh Simmons returned to practice, which matters for Patrick Mahomes' protection on the blind side.

Xavier Worthy steps into the lead role

If Rice is out, Xavier Worthy is the clear top receiver. His production has been modest so far, with 14 catches for 133 yards and a touchdown through four games, but his role has been growing and he posted his best yardage day of the season in Week 4. With Rice and Thornton both sidelined, he would be the focal point of the perimeter passing game alongside Travis Kelce.

Behind Worthy, the depth chart is thin. Second-year receiver Jalen Royals, who has struggled to produce, would see a larger route share. Rookie fifth-round pick Cyrus Allen and special teams contributor Nikko Remigio round out the active receivers. Royals ran 21 routes in Week 4, which is the kind of opportunity that can turn into a usable fantasy line even from a player who has not yet earned it.

Kelce is the other beneficiary. When Kansas City's receiver room thins out, Mahomes leans on his tight end in the short and intermediate areas, and that has historically been one of the most bankable target trees in football.

The matchup and the market

The Chargers arrive at Arrowhead winless at 0-5 after a 23-17 loss to Denver and have failed to cover in every game this season by most accounting. Their offense ranks at or near the bottom of the league in EPA per play, and the line reflects it: Kansas City is a favorite of roughly eight points at most books, with the total in the low-to-mid 40s depending on the shop.

That spread tells you how the market sees this game. A big Chiefs lead would mean a run-heavy second half, which caps the ceiling for Kansas City receivers, but the first-half volume should still flow through Worthy and Kelce. The Chargers have been dealing with injuries in their own secondary, with cornerback Donte Jackson battling a hamstring problem, so the matchup is favorable for a speed receiver like Worthy.

Fantasy fallout

PlayerRole if Rice sitsFantasy outlook
Xavier WorthyNo. 1 perimeter WRWR3 with upside
Travis KelcePrimary short-area targetLocked-in TE1
Jalen RoyalsExpanded route shareDeep-league flex
Rashee RiceLikely inactiveHolddo not drop

Worthy is a startable WR3 or flex in 12-team leagues if Rice is ruled out, and he is worth adding in 10-team leagues if he was dropped after a slow start. His speed makes him a DFS tournament option at a modest salary, because a single long touchdown can return value.

Rice should stay rostered. A hamstring the team chose not to put on IR suggests a short absence, and when he returns he should go right back to being Mahomes' most reliable wideout.

What's next

Watch Thursday's practice report first. If Rice gets on the field in any capacity, his status becomes a genuine question for Sunday. If he sits again Thursday, expect a doubtful or out designation Friday, and lock Worthy and Kelce into lineups. The soft Chargers matchup gives the Chiefs every reason to give Rice the extra week, and fantasy managers should build their Week 6 lineups as if they will.
