Mike Evans' Achilles Soreness and Deebo Samuel's Hamstring Leave the 49ers Waiting on Monday Night Designations

Mike Evans missed Thursday's practice with a rib injury and what Kyle Shanahan called Achilles soreness. Deebo Samuel also missed practice and is widely expected to sit with his hamstring. That leaves the unbeaten San Francisco 49ers with a receiver question heading into Monday night against Washington. On the other side, the Commanders held out Stefon Diggs (hamstring) and running back Jacory Croskey-Merritt (groin), while Terry McLaurin was limited with his own hamstring.

Because this is a Monday game, the official game designations will not come with Friday's reports for the Sunday teams. Both clubs practice Friday and Saturday, and the Out, Doubtful and Questionable tags come with Saturday's final report. That gives fantasy managers an extra day of uncertainty, and it means they will be setting lineups for Sunday's games without final word on several of the most important players in this matchup. Here is what is confirmed, what is pending, and how to plan around it.

What the reports actually say

Evans is the headline. He has been playing through a rib injury since Week 3 against Arizona, and the Achilles soreness is new this week. Shanahan presented it as soreness rather than a serious problem, and reporting from the team suggests no major worry right now. Still, an Achilles complaint for a veteran receiver deserves attention, and the Friday and Saturday sessions will show whether he can practice at all before Monday.

Samuel is a different case. Shanahan said after the hamstring injury that Samuel would miss at least a couple of weeks. The 49ers have decided against placing him on injured reserve. That choice keeps open the possibility of a return after the Week 8 bye, but it does not suggest he will play Monday. Beat coverage has treated his absence against Washington as close to certain.

Two other names on the 49ers' did-not-practice list need context. Christian McCaffrey and Trent Williams sat out Thursday as scheduled rest days, not because of injuries, so neither is a concern for Monday. Nick Bosa (knee, calf) also missed practice, but he is still considered a possibility to play after missing the last three games.

49ers fantasy fallout

With Samuel out, Evans was supposed to carry the receiver room. Earlier this week, that was the main 49ers fantasy story. Now Evans is in question too, and the downside for managers is a Monday night game with no clear answer before Sunday's early games kick off. If Evans plays, he is a locked-in WR2, since he would face very little competition for targets among the receivers. If he sits, the passing game would lean heavily on McCaffrey and the tight ends. In that case, none of the depth receivers would be a reliable start.

The practical move is to put a Monday player in the flex spot only if you can still swap him out. Managers who start Evans should keep a bench option who also plays Monday, or accept that they may have to decide before Sunday's games without the final tag. A missed Friday practice followed by a limited Saturday would most likely produce a questionable designation. Two more absences would point toward a doubtful or out tag.

McCaffrey gets a boost in either scenario. Fewer healthy receivers means more targets out of the backfield. His Thursday rest day was routine, and he is an RB1 start against Washington. Brock Purdy's ceiling depends on Evans. Without him, Purdy is a lower-end QB1 because he would be throwing to a thin group of receivers.

Commanders fantasy fallout

Washington's offense is also short-handed. Diggs missed the Week 5 game against the Giants with the hamstring injury Dan Quinn said he suffered in the Week 4 loss to the Colts, and he did not practice Thursday. McLaurin's hamstring has followed a familiar pattern. He was limited before Week 5, was listed as questionable, and played. If that repeats, McLaurin is a WR2 who comes with injury risk, and his target share rises if Diggs is ruled out again.

Croskey-Merritt's absence was a surprise. Some outlets called it undisclosed at first, and later reports attributed it to his groin. He was limited with the same issue during Week 5 preparation and still played against the Giants. One outlet suggested Thursday could have been maintenance. The Monday kickoff gives him an extra day, but a backfield split with Austin Ekeler becomes more likely if he is limited in any way. Treat him as a flex with downside until Saturday's report.

Jayden Daniels is not on the injury report, according to Hogs Haven, which reported that he practiced fully. He is still wearing a brace on his non-throwing elbow. Daniels is a start because of his rushing, but a receiver group missing Diggs and possibly limited at McLaurin caps his passing ceiling against a 49ers defense that could get Bosa back.

The betting angle

The 49ers (5-0) are favored by 7.5 at home over the Commanders (1-3-1), per the Field Level Media preview, with kickoff at 8:15 p.m. ET Monday. Washington comes in after a 27-27 tie with the Giants that ended on a late clock mistake in overtime. Shanahan has publicly warned against looking past his former team.

The injury report affects the total more than the spread. San Francisco without Samuel and possibly without Evans has fewer explosive options, and Washington without Diggs is in the same situation. That makes Evans' and McLaurin's statuses the key variables for props, more than for the side. Bettors of legal betting age in their jurisdiction who are looking at receiving props should wait for Saturday's designations, because books will adjust once the tags are posted. A Bosa return would also matter for Daniels' sack and rushing props.

What's next

The schedule is different from Sunday games. Friday's practice reports will show participation levels but not designations, and Saturday's final reports will carry the official Out, Doubtful and Questionable tags. The key items to watch are whether Evans practices at all, whether Samuel is formally ruled out, whether Diggs and Croskey-Merritt return to the field, and whether Bosa moves to limited.

For fantasy lineups, put Monday players with uncertain status in a flex spot you can change. Plan for a worst case without Evans, and treat McCaffrey as the safest piece in this game. If Evans is cleared Saturday, keep him in as a WR2. If he is not, managers who prepared a Monday-night backup will be glad they did.
