Jalen Hurts Is Out With a Blood Clot, and Friday's Report Decides Saquon Barkley and DeVonta Smith for Tanner McKee

The Philadelphia Eagles will play Carolina on Sunday without Jalen Hurts. The team ruled its quarterback out for Week 6 after a follow-up ultrasound on Wednesday night showed movement in a small, superficial blood clot in his calf. Philadelphia said Hurts will be out while it settles on a course of treatment. Tanner McKee, the longtime backup, is in line for the third start of his career.

That decision changes everything about Friday's Eagles injury report. Earlier this week the question was whether Saquon Barkley and DeVonta Smith would be back to help Hurts. Now it is whether either one will be available to help a backup quarterback. As of Thursday's report, Barkley had not practiced all week with his right hamstring, Smith had worked his way back to limited, and Dontayvion Wicks was a non-participant. The final game designations come out Friday afternoon, and they will decide how fantasy managers handle the whole Philadelphia offense.

What is confirmed and what is still pending

Hurts' status is official. The Eagles announced it on Thursday rather than waiting for the Friday report, and that is the one designation managers can plan around with certainty. The timeline after Sunday is not as clear. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport described Hurts as out indefinitely. He noted that clots like this are often treated with blood thinners, and a player on blood thinners would not be cleared to take contact. The Eagles have not announced a return timetable.

Hurts was cleared by doctors in London before Week 5 and played every snap of the 19-17 loss to Jacksonville. The team said the clot was found in an ultrasound after the flight to London, and the decision to hold him out came only after the Wednesday follow-up showed it had moved. Media reports describe it as superficial, a different and much less serious condition than deep vein thrombosis. Even so, a team at 2-3 has no reason to take risks with its franchise quarterback.

Barkley: two missed practices and a backup quarterback

Barkley has now missed every practice this week after sitting out the London game with the same right hamstring strain he suffered against the Rams. Nick Sirianni said Monday he was hopeful both Barkley and Smith would be cleared for Carolina, and added that the team would see where things stood at the end of the week. Two straight absences are not what a team expecting its back to play usually reports, but there is still one more practice before the designation.

If Friday brings a limited session and a questionable tag, Barkley becomes a true game-time decision. Fantasy managers should then have a fallback from a Sunday 1 p.m. ET game ready. If Friday brings a third straight absence, a doubtful tag would be the expected result, and a doubtful player should be treated as inactive in fantasy lineups. An out designation would end the debate early.

The workload picture without Barkley is thin. Will Shipley is not practicing with his foot injury, so Dameon Pierce and Carson Steele are the backs left to absorb carries. With a backup quarterback starting, defenses will be more willing to crowd the line of scrimmage. That is a tough environment for any of these runners. Pierce remains the most useful one-week flex option in deeper leagues if Barkley sits, but he carries no ceiling beyond volume.

If Barkley does play, the case for starting him has changed a little. He is still an RB1-level talent, but he would be returning from a hamstring with a backup throwing to him, and the Eagles may manage his snaps. He remains a start in most formats if active, but the ceiling should be set lower than usual.

Smith, Wicks and the McKee passing game

Smith's move to limited participation is the most encouraging Eagles note of the week. He has missed the last two games with the hamstring, and he was a non-participant Wednesday before returning on Thursday. If he practices again Friday and draws a questionable tag, the trend points toward him playing.

Wicks moved the other way and did not practice Thursday. If he is ruled out and Smith plays, Smith becomes the clear top target for McKee by default, with the tight ends taking on more short-area work. If both Smith and Wicks are ruled out, the receiver room drops to depth players, and nobody in that group can be trusted in fantasy lineups.

McKee himself is a superflex and two-quarterback consideration only. He takes over an offense that could be missing its best runner and two of its top receivers. He has also started only twice before, so there is no meaningful sample to project from. Managers in one-quarterback leagues who rostered Hurts need a waiver or bench replacement this week, and given the indefinite timeline, they should consider a quarterback who can hold the job for more than one Sunday.

The betting fallout

The market reacted quickly. SI's betting desk reported the Panthers moving to 3.5-point road favorites at DraftKings after Hurts was ruled out. That is a large swing for a game Philadelphia was expected to control earlier in the week. Most of the Hurts news is already in that number. The Friday tags on Barkley and Smith are the remaining variables that can still move it.

For bettors, the cleanest angle is still Philadelphia's team total rather than the side. A backup quarterback with no Barkley would be the weakest version of this offense, and the under on the Eagles' team total captures that. On the other hand, Smith playing would put a reliable target back in the lineup. Player props tied to McKee's passing volume will open soft, and they deserve a close look once the receiver statuses are known. Bettors of legal betting age in their jurisdiction should wait for the Friday report before taking the side, because two of the game's biggest variables are still pending.

What's next

Friday afternoon's report is the next checkpoint. Watch for three tags. First, Barkley's designation: questionable keeps him alive as a game-time call, while doubtful or out means managers should pivot. Second, whether Smith practices again and stays questionable or better. Third, whether Wicks is ruled out. Sunday's inactive list, released 90 minutes before kickoff, settles anything left over.

Beyond Week 6, the bigger story is Hurts' timeline. If treatment involves blood thinners, as Rapoport suggested is common, this could stretch past one game. Hurts managers should bench him with no hesitation this week, add a quarterback who can cover multiple starts, and watch for the Eagles' next medical update rather than assuming a Week 7 return.
