Lamar Jackson Needs Thumb Surgery and Goes on IR: Joe Fagnano, Derrick Henry and the Ravens' Fantasy Plan for Thursday Night Against Jacksonville

Lamar Jackson's return lasted one throw. The Ravens quarterback injured his right thumb on Baltimore's first offensive play of Sunday's 36-10 loss in Buffalo, his first game back after missing three straight with an ankle injury, and head coach Jesse Minter said after the game that Jackson will have surgery and be placed on injured reserve. That rules Jackson out of Thursday night's home game against the Jacksonville Jaguars and at least three more after it, and Minter did not rule out the possibility that the injury ends his season.

It got worse from there. Backup Tyler Huntley replaced Jackson and left in the second quarter with a toe injury that ESPN's Adam Schefter reported is believed to be turf toe. Huntley was scheduled for an MRI on Monday, and early reports range from uncertain to unlikely for Thursday. That pushed undrafted rookie Joe Fagnano into his NFL debut as the emergency option, and he may be the starter on a short week against the AFC South leaders.

What happened in Buffalo

The box score tells the story of an offense that never got going. Baltimore finished with 144 total yards, its quarterbacks were hit a dozen times, and the Ravens fell to 4-4 with a third straight loss. Fagnano, who signed with Baltimore as an undrafted free agent out of UConn, completed 10 of 21 passes for 91 yards with an interception. Team coverage credited him with staying in the pocket and delivering throws while taking hits, but the passing game produced almost nothing downfield.

Minter declined to say whether the thumb is broken or dislocated. The IR placement is the important detail for fantasy managers: it guarantees a four-game absence and gives the Ravens roster flexibility to add a quarterback. Several reports expect Baltimore to look at veteran options, though a signing this close to a Thursday game would give any newcomer only a couple of practices.

The fantasy fallout for Baltimore's skill players

Derrick Henry is the one Raven whose fantasy value may hold up best. When Baltimore has played without Jackson since the start of 2025, the offense has leaned on Henry even harder: one analysis of those five regular-season games found Henry averaging about 24 carries per game, compared with roughly 17 to 18 with Jackson in the lineup. The trade-off is efficiency. Defenses will stack the box against a rookie quarterback, and a Ravens team that cannot move the ball will not generate as many goal-line trips. Treat Henry as a volume-based RB2 this week rather than a ceiling play.

Zay Flowers takes the biggest hit. He remains Baltimore's top target, and target share tends to concentrate around the No. 1 receiver when a backup is under center, but the quality of those targets drops sharply. Expect shorter throws, fewer deep shots and a passing game that may struggle to clear 200 yards. He is a volatile WR3 or flex in Week 9, not a locked-in WR2.

Mark Andrews is touchdown-dependent in any context now, and that gets worse with an inexperienced quarterback. Historical splits show his yardage was similar with and without Jackson, but the scoring chances shrink when the offense stalls. Hold him if your bench is deep, but start him only if your alternatives are worse.

Jackson managers need to act now. If you have the roster space, the IR slot is the obvious move, but a four-game minimum and an uncertain surgical recovery mean you also need a replacement for the next month. The Week 9 waiver wire has a few streaming options (see the Week 9 waiver wire guide for names), and the lightest bye week of the season helps.

The Jaguars side of Thursday night

Jacksonville arrives in Baltimore with first place in the AFC South and a defense suddenly facing a quarterback with one half of NFL experience. That makes the Jaguars defense one of the strongest streaming plays of the week. Rookie quarterbacks making a first start on a short week typically take sacks and throw interceptions, and the Ravens' offensive line struggled to protect in Buffalo.

On offense, Trevor Lawrence and the Jaguars should see more possessions and better field position than they would against a Jackson-led Ravens team. Parker Washington and the Jacksonville backfield get a small bump in game script, since the Jaguars should spend more time leading. The Brian Thomas Jr. situation is the other variable: the receiver has been the subject of trade calls before the November 10 deadline, so confirm his status before setting a Thursday lineup.

Betting angle

The market has moved hard toward Jacksonville since the injury news, with previews now describing the Jaguars as heavy favorites. That is the correct direction, but there is a trap: lines that swing on a quarterback injury often overshoot, and Baltimore's defense is still capable of keeping a game low scoring. The total is the more interesting market. A Ravens offense with a rookie under center and a Henry-heavy plan tends to shorten games, and the Bills held Baltimore to 10 points with Jackson out of the game after one play.

What to do in your league

1. Move Jackson to IR if your league allows it, and plan for at least a month without him. 2. Downgrade Flowers and Andrews for Week 9, but do not drop them. A veteran signing or Huntley's return could stabilize the passing game before the fantasy playoffs. 3. Keep starting Henry, with lowered touchdown expectations. 4. Stream the Jaguars defense if it is available, especially if Fagnano starts. 5. Check Huntley's MRI result Monday and the Ravens' practice reports Tuesday and Wednesday. A short week compresses everything, and any quarterback signing would be announced quickly.

What's next

The Ravens have extra time after Thursday's game before their next matchup, which gives the front office a window to evaluate the quarterback market and Huntley's toe. The bigger question is Jackson's timeline after surgery. Minter's refusal to rule out a season-ending outcome is a warning sign, and dynasty managers should start pricing in the possibility that Baltimore's season, and Jackson's 2026 fantasy value, has changed for good.
