Christian McCaffrey's Mild Hamstring Strain Meets a Perfectly Timed Bye, and DeForest Buckner Comes Home to the 49ers

Christian McCaffrey has a mild hamstring strain, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday, and the timing could hardly be better. San Francisco is on its Week 8 bye, and Shanahan said the team is "pretty optimistic" McCaffrey will be available for the Nov. 8 game against the Las Vegas Raiders, while adding the standard caveat that nothing is certain.

Then on Tuesday, the 49ers added a familiar face. San Francisco reacquired defensive tackle DeForest Buckner from the Indianapolis Colts for a 2027 fourth-round pick, reuniting him with the franchise that drafted him. For fantasy managers, the McCaffrey update is the headline. For bettors and for anyone streaming defenses, Buckner's return changes how the second half of San Francisco's schedule should be viewed.

What happened to McCaffrey

McCaffrey was hurt in Sunday's 29-20 loss to the Atlanta Falcons, the 49ers' first defeat of the season. The injury was initially described as a thigh issue before further evaluation identified a hamstring strain. McCaffrey returned to start the second half but was clearly limited, and he finished with 34 snaps, his second-lowest total of the season.

A mild strain diagnosed early in the week, followed by a bye, is close to the best case for a hamstring. Strains of this grade often cost a player one game or less. Because the 49ers do not play this weekend, McCaffrey effectively gets a free week of recovery before he would have to miss anything.

The 49ers' bye-week timeline:

DateEvent

Oct. 26Shanahan confirms mild hamstring strain
Week 8Bye
Nov. 8Next game, vs. Raiders

Fantasy fallout for McCaffrey managers

The obvious problem is this week. McCaffrey was already unavailable for Week 8 because of the bye, so the strain does not change your lineup decision. What it changes is your confidence level for Week 9 and the urgency of a backup plan.

Do not sell. A mild hamstring strain with two weeks between games is not a reason to move a workhorse back at a discount, and any manager trying to buy him at a reduced price is betting on a setback that the team does not currently expect.

Do monitor the practice reports when the 49ers return to work next week. Hamstrings are the injury most likely to recur when a player is rushed, and Shanahan has historically managed McCaffrey's workload carefully. A limited participation tag early next week would not be alarming. A missed practice late in the week would be.

If you roster McCaffrey and have bench room, a 49ers backup running back is reasonable insurance until he logs a full practice. If you are in a shallow league, there is no need to burn a roster spot on a handcuff yet.

Buckner's homecoming

Buckner spent his first four seasons in San Francisco before the 49ers traded him to Indianapolis in March 2020. He has spent the six-plus seasons since as one of the league's most consistent interior defenders, and he returns to a front that has been without Nick Bosa for nearly all of 2026. Bosa played only in Week 1 before knee and calf injuries sidelined him, and there have been reports that he could return as soon as Week 9.

The trade reads as a direct response to Seattle, which acquired Quenton Nelson from the Colts earlier on Tuesday. The NFC West's two contenders swapped pieces with the same seller on the same day, which tells you how closely each is tracking the other.

The defensive outlook

If Bosa and Buckner are both active against the Raiders, the 49ers will have their most complete defensive front of the season. The fantasy implications run in both directions:

49ers DST: Rises to a confident starter in favorable matchups once Bosa returns. Buckner's interior push makes life easier for every edge rusher on the roster.

Opposing offenses: Quarterbacks and running backs facing San Francisco in the second half of the season deserve a downgrade relative to what the first seven weeks might suggest.

Raiders in Week 9: Las Vegas skill players are already difficult to trust. A fully loaded 49ers front makes them tougher.

The backfield behind him

Shanahan's run scheme has a long track record of producing usable fantasy weeks from whichever back is carrying the ball, which is why the 49ers' backup running back is always worth knowing by name. If McCaffrey suffers a setback in practice next week, that player becomes a priority Week 9 add. If he practices fully, the backup is a drop candidate again.

Betting angle

The 49ers were a team the market had to price without Bosa, and at times without McCaffrey at full strength. A healthier roster after the bye is the kind of change that can lag in lines for a week or two. Watch the Week 9 number against the Raiders once San Francisco's practice reports come out; a confirmed McCaffrey and Bosa return would justify meaningful movement.

What's next

The 49ers' bye arrives with a loss on the record but with a clear path to a stronger second half: McCaffrey's strain is mild, Buckner is back, and Bosa may not be far behind. For fantasy managers, the plan is simple. Hold McCaffrey, watch next week's practice participation, and consider the 49ers' defense a buy-low target in leagues where someone dropped it during the Bosa absence.
