Justin Verlander Throws a Simulated Game This Weekend Chasing One Last Start

Justin Verlander is scheduled to throw a simulated game over the weekend, the next step in a rehab process the Tigers hope ends with one final major league appearance before he retires. He threw a bullpen session earlier this week and will be evaluated after the simulated game, according to reports out of Detroit.

Verlander announced earlier this year that 2026 would be his last season. At 43 he is the oldest active player in the majors, and his 2026 résumé consists of a single start: March 30 against Arizona, when he allowed five runs over three and two-thirds innings. Hip and hamstring problems have kept him off a major league mound since.

The résumé and what is left of the season

The career numbers are the kind that end the Hall of Fame conversation before it starts: three Cy Young Awards, two World Series titles, an MVP, 266 regular season wins and more than 3,500 strikeouts across 21 seasons. Detroit has treated the possibility of one more appearance as a priority rather than a formality, and team officials have publicly left the door open to a short rehab assignment followed by a big league outing.

The Tigers are not in the playoff race, which is precisely why this is possible. A contender cannot hand a start to a 43-year-old who has thrown fewer than four innings all year. A club playing out the schedule can, and should, if the pitcher is healthy enough to take the ball.

The sequencing from here is straightforward. Simulated game this weekend, evaluation after it, and if everything holds, an appearance in the final week. Nothing about that is guaranteed, and a soft-tissue setback at his age would end it immediately.

The fantasy relevance is small, and that is the honest answer

There is no fantasy case here. A pitcher who has thrown one start all season, is coming off multiple soft-tissue injuries, and would be pitching in what amounts to a ceremonial context is not a streaming option in any format. Anyone in a head-to-head championship matchup should not be looking at this start even if it happens.

The one exception is deep-league or tournament contrarianism, and even that is thin. A single appearance likely to be limited in length, with no guarantee it happens at all, is not a plan a manager should build a week around.

What is worth tracking is the roster mechanics around it. Detroit has to create room and slot the appearance into a rotation that is otherwise auditioning young arms for next season, and that means at least one scheduled start moves. For anyone streaming Tigers pitching in the final week, the schedule is going to shift, and the pitcher who loses a turn is the one to drop.

The subplot worth following is who the Tigers are actually evaluating over these final ten days. Detroit spent the year cycling young starters through the rotation, and the last week of a lost season is the audition that shapes the offseason. Every turn that goes to a farewell appearance is a turn that does not go to a 24-year-old competing for a 2027 job.

That matters for dynasty and keeper managers more than for anyone playing redraft. Innings in September for a rebuilding club are the clearest signal a team sends about who it trusts, and the pitchers who get two starts in the final week are the ones likely to open next season in the rotation rather than at Triple-A.
