Jared Goff Faces a Panthers Secondary Expected to Be Without Both Starting Corners

Sunday Night Football in Week 4 has turned into one of the best fantasy spots of the week. The Detroit Lions (2-1) visit the Carolina Panthers (1-2) at 8:20 p.m. ET, and Carolina is expected to play without both starting cornerbacks. Jaycee Horn suffered what the team described as a significant quad injury, and Mike Jackson left Sunday's loss in Cleveland with a groin injury. The total sits at 50.5, second-highest on the Week 4 board.

Jared Goff has not thrown an interception all season. Against a secondary this depleted, he may not need to take many chances.

Detroit's offense is humming

Goff has 802 passing yards, eight touchdowns and no interceptions through three games, good for a 116.1 passer rating that would be the best of his career over a full season. He went 25 of 32 for 269 yards and two scores in Sunday's 31-24 win over the Jets, extending his streak of games with a touchdown pass to 26.

Jahmyr Gibbs was the star of that game. He ran for 99 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries and finished with 164 scrimmage yards and three total scores. Amon-Ra St. Brown caught another touchdown, his fifth in 10 quarters this season.

Detroit's offense has been efficient through the air and physical on the ground. Carolina now has to defend both without its top two corners.

Carolina's injury problem

Horn is the Panthers' best cover player, and losing him changes how Carolina can play defense. Without Horn and Jackson, the Panthers will be relying on backups against St. Brown and the Lions' other receivers, with little depth behind them. The team is banged up at receiver, running back and in the secondary, and Bryce Young took a pounding from Cleveland's pass rush on Sunday.

The offensive line took a hit too. Guard Damien Lewis is expected to miss a few weeks with a UCL injury in his elbow. Carolina has its bye after this game, so Lewis could return for the Week 6 game against Philadelphia, but he is unlikely to be available on Sunday night.

Fantasy fallout

Jared Goff is a top-eight quarterback play this week. His touchdown streak, clean turnover record and a depleted secondary add up to a high floor.

Amon-Ra St. Brown is a top-three receiver play. He is scoring at a rate that will cool off at some point, but the matchup is as good as it gets. In PPR, he is the safest start at the position this week.

Jahmyr Gibbs is an elite RB1. Previews of this game have flagged Carolina's run defense as a weakness, and Gibbs is Detroit's primary back with a heavy receiving role. His touchdown upside is high in any game script.

Detroit's secondary receivers get a boost too. When a defense is this thin at corner, the second and third options in the passing game see softer coverage, and the Lions' depth pieces become viable deep-league flex plays.

Bryce Young's side of it

The Panthers passing game is interesting because Detroit's pass defense has been bad. The Lions rank 28th in opponent completion percentage and last in the league in passing yards allowed per game at 299.3. Young has 939 passing yards through three games after throwing 48 times for 291 yards in Cleveland.

The catch is pressure. Young has faced one of the highest pressure rates in the league through three weeks, and Detroit blitzes at the third-highest rate. With Lewis out, the interior of Carolina's line is weaker. That combination can lead to sacks and short throws, which limits Young's ceiling even in a good matchup.

Young is a streaming option in superflex and deeper leagues because the volume is there. He is not a start in 12-team one-quarterback leagues.

The betting angle

A 50.5 total with a banged-up home defense and a Lions defense that gives up yards through the air points toward points. The risk to the over is Carolina's offense stalling under pressure, which would leave Detroit to do most of the scoring by itself.

For DFS on the Sunday night showdown slate, Goff, St. Brown and Gibbs will be popular captains. A Carolina pass catcher is the leverage play if you expect the Panthers to keep up.

Carolina's schedule after Sunday

The Panthers have their bye after this game, which matters for managers holding Carolina players. Anyone on the roster will be unavailable in Week 5, and teams with thin benches need to plan for that now. Bryce Young, Carolina's receivers and its running backs all fall into that category.

The bye also gives Carolina time to get healthy. Horn's quad injury was described as significant, so a return in Week 6 against Philadelphia is not guaranteed. Lewis has a better chance to be back for that game. If Carolina's secondary stays depleted into October, opposing passing games will keep getting upgrades against the Panthers.

What it means

Start every Lions skill player you have. Goff and St. Brown get a clear upgrade, and Gibbs stays an RB1 in any matchup. On the Carolina side, Young is a volume play in deeper formats, but the pass rush keeps him out of most starting lineups. Check Friday's final injury report for Horn and Jackson. If either surprises and plays, the Lions receivers drop slightly, but they stay in lineups.
