Jalen Hurts Goes on IR and the Eagles Sign Jaydon Blue as Tanner McKee Leads a Short-Handed Offense Against Carolina
By Verdexed NFL Desk

The Philadelphia Eagles placed quarterback Jalen Hurts on injured reserve on Saturday because of a superficial blood clot in his calf, a move that rules him out for at least four games and reverses the team's earlier stance. Philadelphia filled the roster spot by signing running back Jaydon Blue from the practice squad, a sign of how thin the backfield has become. Tanner McKee will make the third start of his career Sunday against the Carolina Panthers at 1 p.m. ET.
The IR decision came less than seven hours after NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Saturday that the Eagles were not planning an IR stint while they gathered more information. Schefter reported that the change followed consultations with numerous doctors and experts. Hurts had already been ruled out for Week 6, so the move does not change Sunday's lineup, but it changes the calendar for every Eagles fantasy manager.
What the IR move means
A player on injured reserve must miss at least four games, so Hurts will sit out Sunday's game and at least the next three Eagles games after it. Rapoport had described Hurts as out indefinitely earlier in the week and noted that clots of this type are often treated with blood thinners, which would keep a player from taking contact. The Eagles have not announced a return date, and the IR minimum is a floor rather than a projection.
The clot was found in an ultrasound after the team's flight to London, and Hurts played every snap of the 19-17 loss to Jacksonville after doctors cleared him. A follow-up ultrasound on Wednesday showed the clot had moved, which is when the team ruled him out. Saturday's IR placement is the clearest signal yet that Philadelphia is planning for a stretch without him.
Another weekend of downgrades
Hurts was not the only Eagle to land on Saturday's transaction wire. Tight ends Grant Calcaterra (back) and Eli Stowers (quad) were downgraded to out after the team declined to activate either one from injured reserve, and guard Landon Dickerson (knee) and cornerback Jakorian Bennett (knee) were also ruled out. The final Friday report had already ruled out Saquon Barkley (hamstring), Will Shipley (foot), Michael Carter II (abdomen) and Jalyx Hunt (knee/ankle).
There was some good news. DeVonta Smith was a full participant on Friday and carries no game designation after missing two games with a hamstring injury. Dontayvion Wicks also practiced fully on Friday and has no status. Dallas Goedert is available at tight end.
| Eagles player | Position | Injury | Week 6 status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jalen Hurts | QB | Calf blood clot | Outplaced on IR Saturday |
| Saquon Barkley | RB | Hamstring | Out |
| Will Shipley | RB | Foot | Outon IR |
| Landon Dickerson | G | Knee | Outdowngraded Saturday |
| DeVonta Smith | WR | Hamstring | No designation, expected to play |
| Dontayvion Wicks | WR | Hamstring | No designation |
Jaydon Blue joins a rebuilt backfield
With Barkley out for a second straight game, Shipley on IR and Tank Bigsby recovering from core muscle surgery, the Eagles' healthy backs are Dameon Pierce, Carson Steele and Blue. As Eagles beat reporter Zach Berman pointed out, none of the three began the season on the 53-man roster.
Blue was a 2025 fifth-round pick by Dallas out of Texas, where he ran a 4.38 40-yard dash. He carried 38 times for 129 yards and a touchdown in five games as a rookie and spent the last five weeks on Philadelphia's practice squad. His speed gives the Eagles a different look from Pierce and Steele, but nothing in his résumé points to a featured role in his first week on the active roster.
Fantasy fallout
Dameon Pierce is the back to roster and, in deep leagues, to start. He is the most likely lead runner with Barkley out, but his value is volume only. Defenses will crowd the box against a backup quarterback, and Philadelphia has not shown much ability to finish drives without its starters. He is a low-end flex.
Jaydon Blue and Carson Steele are not fantasy plays this week. Blue is worth a watch in dynasty formats if he earns change-of-pace work, but that is a Week 7 conversation at the earliest.
DeVonta Smith becomes the clear No. 1 target for McKee. He returns from a hamstring injury, so a full workload is not guaranteed, but a full Friday practice and no designation are encouraging. He is a WR3 with target-volume upside. Wicks is a deep-league flex at best.
Dallas Goedert gains the most from Saturday's moves. With Calcaterra and Stowers both out, he is the only pass-catching tight end of note, and short throws should be a large part of McKee's plan. He is a TE1 streamer.
Tanner McKee is a superflex or two-quarterback option only. Hurts managers should add a quarterback who can cover at least four games rather than a one-week streamer, because Saturday's move guarantees the absence lasts at least four games.
The Panthers side
Carolina (2-2) also used Saturday to get healthier. The Panthers activated running back Trevor Etienne (ankle) from injured reserve, along with tackle Taylor Moton from the non-football injury list and defensive tackle Tershawn Wharton from the PUP list. All three are questionable. With AJ Dillon ruled out and Jonathon Brooks on IR, Etienne slots in behind starter Chuba Hubbard, and head coach Dave Canales said he was confident Etienne would play.
Hubbard is the Carolina back to start. He gets a Philadelphia defense missing Carter, Hunt and Bennett, and a game script that may favor the Panthers. Etienne is a bench stash until his role becomes clear.
Betting angle
The market has moved hard against Philadelphia this week. SI's betting desk reported the Eagles opening as 1.5-point favorites and now sitting as 3.5-point underdogs at DraftKings, with the total falling from 43.5 to 38.5. Carolina is roughly -180 to -185 on the moneyline at major books. That is a five-point swing on the side and a five-point drop in the total, and almost all of it came from the Hurts news earlier in the week.
Saturday's IR move does not change Sunday's quarterback, so it should not move this number much. The downgrades of Dickerson and both backup tight ends are smaller pieces, but they push in the same direction: fewer healthy blockers and fewer reliable targets for a backup quarterback. With the total already at 38.5, the cleanest Eagles angle remains the team total rather than the side. For those of legal betting age in their jurisdiction, Smith's and Goedert's reception props are worth checking once the inactive list confirms both are active.

What's next
Sunday's inactive list will confirm Smith and show whether Etienne and Moton suit up for Carolina. Beyond Week 6, the Eagles' next medical update on Hurts matters more than any single game result. The IR minimum is four games, and if blood thinners are part of the treatment, the timeline could run longer. Barkley's hamstring is the other clock to watch. His return would give McKee a real running game, and until then the Philadelphia offense will be built around Smith, Goedert and whoever wins the backfield snaps.
