Fantasy Basketball Week 3 Waiver Wire: Aday Mara, Ja'Kobe Walter and Anthony Black Lead the Adds Created by the Injury Wave
By Verdexed NBA Desk

The NBA's early-season injury wave keeps reshaping fantasy rosters, and Week 3 offers some of the clearest waiver opportunities of the young season. Oklahoma City is without Chet Holmgren, Cason Wallace and Alex Caruso, which has pushed rookie center Aday Mara into a real role. Toronto is starting Ja'Kobe Walter while Kawhi Leonard ramps back from knee swelling. Orlando is down Jalen Suggs and Paolo Banchero, which has made Anthony Black a nightly assist source. With no games on Tuesday for Election Day, managers had an extra day to plan, and the adds below are ranked by how long the opportunity should last.
The Week 3 add list
Here is a quick look at the top targets, the reason each one is available and how long the window should stay open. Roster rates vary widely by platform, so check your own league.
| Player | Team | Why now | Window |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aday Mara | OKC | Holmgren, Wallace, Caruso out | Weeks |
| Ja'Kobe Walter | TOR | Starting for Kawhi Leonard | About a week or more |
| Anthony Black | ORL | Suggs and Banchero out | Weeks |
| Derik Queen | NOP | Productive bench role | Season-long |
| Collin Murray-Boyles | TOR | Starts when Poeltl sits | Game to game |
| Cameron Johnson | DEN | Back from injury, big minutes | Season-long |
| Pelle Larsson | MIA | Four-game week | One week |
Aday Mara, Thunder
Mara is the top add of the week in several industry columns, and the reasoning is straightforward. Holmgren is out eight to 10 weeks with a patellar tendon tear, and Wallace (shoulder) and Caruso (ankle) are both out indefinitely, which leaves Oklahoma City thin up front and on the perimeter. Mara logged a season-high 28 minutes in his most recent game and posted seven points, nine rebounds, three assists and four blocks. His minutes have climbed from the low teens in his first three games to a range of roughly 19 to 27 over his last three.
The upside is in the defensive categories. A rookie center blocking four shots in 28 minutes is a profile that wins blocks in category leagues even without big scoring nights. Some analysts urge caution, since his scoring role is limited next to Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Isaiah Hartenstein, but in 12-team leagues his blocks and rebounds justify the add. Verdict: add in all 12-team category leagues.
Ja'Kobe Walter, Raptors
Walter moved into the starting lineup when Leonard went down with left knee swelling, and he scored 22 points in his first start at Minnesota. Imaging showed no structural damage to Leonard's knee, and the latest update says he is heading back to Toronto to begin ramping up, with a reassessment in about a week. That gives Walter at least a few more starts. In nine-category formats, one industry column has him performing as a top-50 player over his starts. Coach Darko Rajakovic said early on that Walter would get more minutes but would not necessarily start every game, so the role could change when Leonard returns. Verdict: add now and ride the starts.
Anthony Black, Magic
Black's roster rate spiked last week, but he is still available in some leagues. Suggs (knee) is expected to miss at least another week, and Banchero (ankle) is out for at least a few more weeks, which leaves Black as Orlando's primary playmaker for now. He brings assists and steals, and his scoring has grown with the usage. Verdict: add wherever he is still available.
Derik Queen, Pelicans
Queen has pushed his way into the top 75 on the season and scored 20 points off the bench in Monday's 135-134 overtime win that handed Memphis its first loss. He also got into a postgame argument with Isaiah Stewart after talking trash late, which says something about the confidence of a player who keeps earning minutes. Verdict: add in 12-team leagues as a long-term hold.
Deeper-league targets
Collin Murray-Boyles has drawn starts when Jakob Poeltl has been out, and he contributes rebounds and defensive stats. He is a game-to-game play until Poeltl's status is clearer. Cameron Johnson returned from injury and immediately played 34 minutes for Denver, a sign he is back in the core rotation, which makes him a top-100 option. Pelle Larsson is a nine-category streamer for Miami's four-game week.
Two more names appear in multiple Week 3 columns. Tristan da Silva and Scoot Henderson are both listed as priority adds by NBC Sports, and Phoenix's Collin Gillespie remains a points-league target whose turnovers and shooting are less damaging in those formats.
The Verdexed angle
The common thread is that injuries create roles, and roles create value faster than talent does in November. Mara's window is the longest of the group because Holmgren's absence is measured in months rather than days, which is why he sits at the top of the list despite a limited scoring role. Walter has the most immediate upside, but his value has a clear expiration date tied to Leonard. Black's value depends on two returns, which should keep him useful through most of November.

What to do now
Make Mara your first claim if he is available. Add Walter next if you need guard or wing help, and grab Black if your league did not already move on him. Queen is the best long-term hold of the group. Drop candidates are players whose minutes have shrunk as teams have gotten healthy, and any streamer who has gone a week without a useful category line.
