Cowboys at Texans: Winless Houston Is Favored and Nico Collins Holds the Key

The Houston Texans are 0-3 and 2.5-point home favorites over the 1-2 Dallas Cowboys on Sunday, a line that tells you how much the market still believes in Houston's defense and how little it trusts Dallas on the road after a heartbreaker in Rio. The total sits at 47.5. The biggest variable is Nico Collins, who returned to practice Wednesday as a limited participant for the first time since hurting his hamstring before Week 2.

Both teams arrive off last-second losses. Dallas fell 34-31 to Baltimore in Brazil on Tyler Loop's 56-yard field goal with one second left. Houston lost 19-17 to Indianapolis when Spencer Shrader hit a 53-yarder with 21 seconds remaining, minutes after Woody Marks had given the Texans the lead. One of these teams leaves Sunday with a season in genuine trouble.

Houston's offense needs Collins back

The Texans have scored 54 points in three games, and the drop-off without Collins has been stark. C.J. Stroud has 794 passing yards and no interceptions this season, but over the two games Collins missed he completed 56.1 percent of his passes at 6.3 yards per attempt with one touchdown. In the Colts loss he went 16 of 27 for 167 yards, and Houston managed only 223 total yards.

Collins opened the season with seven catches for 75 yards and a touchdown against Buffalo, and he has been the only reliable downfield threat on a roster that lost Jayden Higgins to a torn ACL. Reports over the weekend gave him a decent chance to play in Week 4, and a limited Wednesday practice is the expected first step. His Friday designation decides whether this offense functions.

The running game will not bail Houston out. The Texans average 3.6 yards per carry, and against the Colts David Montgomery ran 11 times for 33 yards while Marks had five carries for 15. The offensive line has not created room for either back, and the committee splits whatever volume exists.

Dallas has the better offense and the worse defense

Dak Prescott has thrown for 730 yards with seven touchdowns and one interception while completing 69.5 percent of his passes. His fantasy finishes have been uneven, QB18, QB3 and QB17, largely because opponents have taken away the deep middle. Dallas has faced two-high coverage on 78.8 percent of Prescott's dropbacks, the second-highest rate in the league. In Rio he went 25 of 40 for 276 yards and a touchdown.

CeeDee Lamb has 20 catches for 309 yards and three touchdowns, with 100-yard games in two of three weeks. George Pickens, playing the season on the franchise tag, gives Dallas a second outside threat that most defenses cannot double.

The problem is the other side of the ball. The Cowboys have generated very little pass rush, reportedly just two sacks through three games, among the lowest totals in the league. Dallas also added cornerback Joey Porter Jr. in a trade with Pittsburgh this week, though how quickly he is integrated into the defense is an open question for Sunday.

The matchup inside the matchup

Houston's defense is the reason this line favors a winless team. Will Anderson Jr. has four sacks through three games, including 2.5 against the Colts along with a forced fumble, and the Texans have 10 sacks as a team. Danielle Hunter remains a second edge threat that forces protection to choose.

The schematic angle favors Dallas through the air. Houston plays single-high coverage on 67 percent of its snaps, the third-highest rate in the league. After three weeks of two-high shells, Prescott should see more one-on-one looks for Lamb and Pickens, especially in the middle of the field. The question is whether the Dallas offensive line can hold up long enough against Anderson and Hunter for those routes to develop.

For Houston, the opposite dynamic applies. A Dallas defense without a pass rush is exactly the opponent that should let Stroud settle in, and a healthy Collins would give him a target who wins against single coverage.

Fantasy fallout

CeeDee Lamb is a locked-in WR1 despite the matchup. The coverage shift is more important than the defensive ranking.

George Pickens is a strong WR2 and the more interesting DFS play, because the difficult matchup will keep his ownership in check.

Dak Prescott is a QB1 with a wide range of outcomes. The Houston pass rush caps his floor, and the single-high looks raise his ceiling.

Nico Collins is a WR2 if active, with a ceiling higher than that against a defense with no pass rush. If he is limited again Friday, consider the risk of a reduced snap count in his first game back.

C.J. Stroud is a streaming option only if Collins plays. Without Collins, his last two games are the baseline.

Texans running backs are flex plays only. Montgomery is the early-down and short-yardage back, Marks the late-game option, and neither has had room to run.

Texans defense is a start. Anderson's sack production and a team total of 10 sacks make Houston a top-10 option at the position, even against a capable Dallas offense.

Betting angle

A winless home favorite is an unusual spot, and it reflects a market that rates Houston's defense ahead of its record. The number at 2.5 leaves the Texans backers below the key number of 3, which matters in a game between two teams that have each lost on a final-seconds field goal.

Collins is the swing factor for the side and the total. If he is ruled out, expect the total to drift down and the spread toward a pick'em. If he is a full participant by Friday, the Texans side and the over both look healthier than they do now. Player props on Lamb's receiving yards are worth checking against the coverage data, because receiving lines are often set on season averages that include games against two-high looks.

What's next

Friday's injury report sets the terms for this game. Collins' designation is the first thing to check, and any participation upgrade would move both the line and his fantasy projection. On the Dallas side, watch for how the team lists Porter and whether he is active. The loser falls to 1-3 or 0-4, and for Houston, that would put the season in serious danger before October is a week old.
