The 49ers Have Lost Three Receivers and Jacob Cowing Is Suddenly a Starter

Demarcus Robinson was carted to the locker room with an ankle injury during San Francisco's 35-13 win over Miami on Sunday, and the diagnosis is a high ankle sprain that is expected to keep him out for somewhere between three and six weeks. He caught three passes for 34 yards before he went down. The 49ers are now down to a receiver room that looked deep in August and looks improvised in late September.

Ricky Pearsall had season-ending knee surgery over the summer. Rookie De'Zhaun Stribling required surgery on a left ankle injury that is expected to cost him roughly ten weeks. Mike Evans, who joined San Francisco in the offseason, left the Miami game in the fourth quarter with a hip issue. Head coach Kyle Shanahan said the injury did not appear serious but that Evans will have to be managed through the practice week.

Jacob Cowing is the name to write down

Cowing, a 2024 fourth-round pick, has four career catches. He is now in line for a significantly expanded role, and the 49ers front office has publicly acknowledged it is looking at outside additions to fill the gaps.

The case for Cowing is not about his career production, which is negligible. It is about opportunity in a specific offense. Shanahan's system generates targets through structure rather than through individual separation ability, and the slot and motion roles in it have produced usable fantasy weeks for players with far less pedigree than a fourth-round pick in his third year. When this offense needs a body, that body catches passes.

The case against is equally clear. Cowing has never held a full-time role, San Francisco funnels enormous target volume through its tight end and running back positions, and Shanahan has historically been willing to simply throw to Christian McCaffrey more rather than force-feed an unproven receiver.

Treat Cowing as a speculative add in twelve-team leagues and a priority add in leagues that start three wide receivers or use a deep bench. He is not a Week 3 starter. He is a player whose role could double in a week, and those are the adds that win seasons.

Mike Evans is the more important fantasy question

Evans matters more than Cowing this week and every week. Shanahan describing the hip as not serious but requiring management is coachspeak for a player who will be limited in practice and likely play. That is the most common script for a veteran receiver with a soft tissue issue in September.

The practical fantasy read: Evans stays in lineups unless he misses practice entirely. San Francisco plays Arizona in Week 3, and a 49ers offense with a thinned-out receiver room is one that concentrates targets rather than spreading them. Fewer available bodies means a higher share for the healthy ones, which is the mechanical reason injured receiver rooms often produce better weeks for the survivors than a fully healthy room would.

Watch the Wednesday injury report. A veteran listed as a limited participant with a hip injury three days before a game is a normal maintenance designation. A veteran who does not practice at all on Thursday is a different story.

Why the 49ers are running out of IR flexibility

San Francisco is approaching a roster-management problem that gets less attention than the injuries themselves. Teams have a limited number of return-from-injured-reserve designations, and the 49ers are accumulating candidates faster than they can spend them.

That constraint has a downstream fantasy effect. When a team runs low on IR slots, it becomes more likely to carry a banged-up player on the active roster rather than shelve him, which produces more game-time decisions and more short-week uncertainty. Managers rostering 49ers pass catchers should expect a season of Friday and Saturday scrambling.

It also raises the probability of an outside addition. Front offices that cannot shuffle the roster internally sign veterans off the street. Any veteran receiver who lands in San Francisco in the next ten days becomes an immediate waiver consideration, because this offense has a history of turning midseason additions into weekly starters.

The Verdexed model take

Our projection framework values receivers by expected routes run multiplied by target rate per route, and the 49ers just moved a large block of routes from injured players to healthy ones. The total number of pass attempts does not change. The distribution does.

That is why the model is more bullish on Evans than the headline suggests and only cautiously interested in Cowing. Evans gets a guaranteed route share increase. Cowing gets a probabilistic one that depends on the coaching staff's willingness to play him over a street signing.

On the game side, the model does not move San Francisco's team total much on receiver injuries. This offense has been resilient to skill-position attrition for the better part of a decade because the run game and the tight end position carry so much of the scoring load. Bettors looking to fade the 49ers on injury news are usually fading the wrong input.

What to do in your league

Add Cowing in deeper formats and stash him. Hold Evans and check Thursday's report. Drop Robinson in redraft leagues shallower than fourteen teams, because a high ankle sprain with a three-to-six week window means he will not be usable until the back half of October at the earliest, and roster spots are too valuable in September to hold that long.

If you are in a dynasty league, this is the moment to check the price on Pearsall, whose season is already over and whose value will never be lower. The 49ers still have a first-round pick's worth of investment in him and an offense that makes receivers productive. Buying a wide receiver in the week he is least relevant is how dynasty rosters get built.
