Saints Hold Out Alvin Kamara and Chris Olave as Tyler Shough Is Limited Before Minnesota
By Verdexed NFL Desk

The New Orleans Saints opened their short week with three of their most important offensive players on the injury report. Alvin Kamara did not practice Wednesday because of back soreness, Chris Olave was held out with a non-injury rest designation, and quarterback Tyler Shough was limited with a left hand injury. The 1-3 Saints host the unbeaten Minnesota Vikings on Sunday at the Caesars Superdome.
Context matters for all three. New Orleans played on Monday night, losing 45-24 to Atlanta, and held only a half-speed walkthrough Wednesday, so the report was an estimate rather than a reflection of a full practice. Of the three, Kamara is the only real concern for Sunday.
What the Wednesday report actually says
Kamara's absence is the one to watch. Head coach Kellen Moore said the running back's back was sore, and that the knee injury Kamara suffered on Monday night had been checked out and was fine. Kamara got his legs rolled up on a third-quarter carry against the Falcons, was listed as questionable to return, and came back before the quarter ended. He finished with seven carries for 23 yards and two touchdowns plus five catches for 35 yards.
Olave's DNP is far less worrying. The Saints listed him as a non-injury rest day. He took a hard shot late in the Atlanta game and was seen limping, but the team indicated the rest day was not tied to that hit. He had eight catches for more than 110 yards on Monday night and has been the clear top option in the passing game.
Shough's injury is to his non-throwing hand. He played every offensive snap against Atlanta after his left hand was hit, and he told reporters he was sore but that the injury would not limit him and that he will play Sunday. The Saints listed him as limited; one version of the report distributed through Minnesota showed him as a full participant, but the Saints' own listing is the one that counts.
| Saints player | Injury | Wednesday status |
|---|---|---|
| Alvin Kamara | Back | Did not practice |
| Chris Olave | Not injury related (rest) | Did not practice |
| Tyler Shough | Left hand | Limited |
| Barion Brown | Thigh | Did not practice |
| Kaden Elliss | Calf | Did not practice |
| Noah Fant | Abdomen | Limited |
The backfield is already thin
The Kamara uncertainty matters more than usual because New Orleans is already without Travis Etienne Jr. The Saints placed Etienne on injured reserve on Oct. 1 with a hamstring injury suffered in the Week 3 loss to Las Vegas, and his earliest possible return is Nov. 8 against Cleveland. Etienne had led the team in carries and rushing yards before the injury.
Behind Kamara, the depth is shaky. Kendre Miller handled six carries for nine yards on Monday and lost a fumble, and undrafted rookie CJ Donaldson is the other option in the room. Kamara played about 41 percent of the snaps against Atlanta, so even when healthy he has been part of a rotation rather than a workhorse.
Shough and the passing game
Shough threw 48 times against Atlanta, completing 30 for roughly 286 yards and a touchdown, but the game got away early with the Falcons leading 24-7 at halftime. Ball security has been his problem: he entered Week 4 with a league-high five fumbles. Still, the volume is real, and the Saints' defense has been leaky enough to keep him throwing.
Juwan Johnson caught six passes for 59 yards Monday, Devaughn Vele caught the late touchdown, and Noah Fant is limited with an abdomen injury. Receiver Barion Brown (thigh) also did not practice.
The Minnesota side: Jefferson is back on the field
Justin Jefferson returned to practice Wednesday on a limited basis, his first work since spraining his right ankle in the Sept. 27 win at Tampa Bay. He missed the 15-10 win over Miami, and he has said he expects to play in New Orleans, near where he grew up. The surprise was Jordan Addison, who did not practice with hamstring soreness after playing 75 of 78 snaps against Miami. Kevin O'Connell described Addison's issue as minor and said he hoped to get him back to limited work later in the week.
Kyler Murray is Minnesota's starter. He went 27 of 37 for 247 yards against the Dolphins without a touchdown pass, as Will Reichard kicked five field goals and T.J. Hockenson caught all 13 of his targets for 119 yards. Left tackle Christian Darrisaw (concussion) also did not practice, and right tackle Brian O'Neill (knee) was limited.
Fantasy fallout
Alvin Kamara: He is the hardest call on this roster. If he returns to practice Thursday or Friday, he is a flex play with touchdown upside after his two-score night, though his role has been capped. If he misses the week, Kendre Miller becomes a volume-only RB3 against a strong Minnesota defense, and nobody in this backfield is a confident start.
Chris Olave: Start him as a WR2. The rest designation is not a warning sign, and Shough's pass volume keeps his floor intact. Expect a full or limited session before the weekend.
Tyler Shough: The hand is not the problem; the matchup is. Brian Flores' defense just held Miami to 10 points. Shough is a superflex starter on volume, but in one-quarterback leagues he is a matchup-based streamer at best this week.
Justin Jefferson: Plan to start him if he progresses from limited to full or close to it. He is the one Viking capable of turning this into a high-scoring game, and his return pulls targets away from Hockenson, who has been the beneficiary.
Jordan Addison and T.J. Hockenson: Addison's hamstring makes him a riskier WR3 this week, especially with Jefferson back. Hockenson remains a strong tight end play after a 13-catch game, but his target share should shrink if both receivers suit up.
Betting angle and what to do in your league
The key variables are Kamara's status and whether Jefferson and Addison both play. A Saints backfield without Kamara leans further on Shough's arm against a defense that just limited Miami, which is a bad recipe for New Orleans scoring. If Jefferson is a full go, Minnesota's passing game has a much higher ceiling than it showed against the Dolphins. Verdexed's game-by-game call is on the NFL predictions page (/nfl/predictions), and the full Week 5 slate is covered at /blog/nfl-week-5-picks-2026.
For managers: keep Olave in lineups, line up a Kamara replacement now in case he is ruled out, and treat Jefferson as active unless Friday's report says otherwise.
What's next
Friday brings game designations for both teams. The Saints' Thursday report, the first with a real practice after the Monday game, will show whether Kamara's back is improving and whether Olave returns. For Minnesota, Addison's participation and whether Jefferson upgrades to full are the items that will move lineups. Kickoff is Sunday, Oct. 11, at 1 p.m. ET.
