Raiders at Patriots: Ashton Jeanty Is Questionable and New England Is Down Four Cornerbacks, Including Christian Gonzalez

The Las Vegas Raiders visit Gillette Stadium on Sunday with their best fantasy asset in question and their opponent's secondary in tatters. Ashton Jeanty is listed as questionable with ankle and foot injuries after missing practice time this week, and at least one report described him as trending in the wrong direction. On the other side, the New England Patriots have ruled out six players, four of them cornerbacks, including No. 1 corner Christian Gonzalez (shoulder) and Carlton Davis III (neck).

Both injury stories matter for fantasy managers setting 1 p.m. ET lineups. A healthy Jeanty is a weekly RB1. A Raiders passing game facing New England's fifth and sixth cornerbacks is a matchup to target.

Jeanty's status, and what to do

Jeanty's questionable tag is the biggest fantasy decision in this game. Reports this week were mixed: some indicated he was hopeful to play, while others said his practice participation was limited enough to raise concern. With a 1 p.m. kickoff, managers will have the inactive list about 90 minutes beforehand.

If Jeanty is active: Start him. His workload in Las Vegas makes him a high-floor RB1 even at less than full health, and a Patriots defense dealing with secondary injuries may have to commit extra resources to coverage, which can open running lanes. The concern is a reduced snap share if he aggravates the injury or if the Raiders manage his workload. Expect a smaller role than usual but enough volume to justify a start.

If Jeanty is inactive: Pivot to a back from a later game if you can. The Raiders' backup situation is not one to chase for a single week without clear information on who leads the committee.

The safest approach is to have a backup plan ready from the 4 p.m. ET or night games, so a late scratch does not leave a hole in your lineup.

New England's secondary

The Patriots' injury report is one of the most striking of the week. Six players are out, and the cornerback room has been hit hardest.

Gonzalez is missing his second straight game after hurting his shoulder against Jacksonville in Week 3. New England signed cornerback Kindle Vildor from the practice squad and activated Brenden Schooler from the non-football injury list on Saturday, moves that add depth but do not replace a player of Gonzalez's caliber.

That creates an opportunity for the Raiders' passing game. Tight end Brock Bowers is the most obvious beneficiary. Bowers has been a weekly TE1 when healthy, and a depleted secondary means fewer players available to cover him. Start him with confidence.

New England's offense

The Patriots placed receiver Mack Hollins on injured reserve Saturday with a calf injury, which means he will miss at least four games. A.J. Brown is also on injured reserve with an ankle injury. That leaves the receiver room thinner than New England planned for, with the team expected to lean on a group that includes Romeo Doubs and DeMario Douglas.

Quarterback Drake Maye is listed on the injury report with a right shoulder issue but carries no game status, so he is expected to play. Running back Rhamondre Stevenson is questionable with a knee injury. If Stevenson is limited, the Patriots' backfield workload shifts, which affects the value of every New England back.

For fantasy, Maye is a viable streaming option in a matchup against a Raiders defense that is dealing with its own injuries. Las Vegas has ruled out receivers Jalen Nailor (concussion) and Dont'e Thornton (hamstring), along with Trey Zuhn (knee), which affects its own passing game more than its defense.

Betting angle

New England is a 3.5-point home favorite at most books, with the total at 45.5. The lookahead line earlier in the season had the Patriots as more than a touchdown favorite, so the market has moved significantly toward Las Vegas, reflecting both the Raiders' performance and the Patriots' injuries.

The total is the more interesting market. Two teams with depleted units in key spots, the Patriots' secondary and the Raiders' receiver room, could produce a game that goes either way. Jeanty's status is a swing factor: if he is out, the Raiders' offense becomes more one-dimensional, which could push the game toward the under.

The Verdexed model's view of this game is on the NFL predictions page and in the Week 5 picks.

What to do in your league

- Start: Brock Bowers against a depleted secondary. Ashton Jeanty if active. - Stream: Drake Maye in favorable matchups. - Monitor: Jeanty's and Stevenson's inactive status about 90 minutes before kickoff. - Avoid: Chasing a Raiders backup back without clear information on the committee. - Waiver watch: New England's receiver room is thin. Whichever wideout leads the Patriots in targets this week becomes a deeper-league add.

What's next

The Patriots' cornerback situation is the story to follow beyond this week. If Gonzalez's shoulder keeps him out longer, New England's defense becomes a target for opposing passing games, and fantasy managers should take note when setting lineups against them. For the Raiders, Jeanty's health is everything. A multi-week absence would remove one of the most productive young backs in the league from fantasy lineups and change how bettors view Las Vegas for the rest of the month.
