LeBron James Played Center in His 76ers Debut, but Tyrese Maxey Still Owns Philadelphia's Offense: The Fantasy Read From the Win Over the Knicks
By Verdexed Fantasy Desk

The Philadelphia 76ers spoiled the New York Knicks' championship banner night on Tuesday, winning 106-100 at Madison Square Garden in LeBron James' first game with his fourth NBA team. James finished with 14 points, nine rebounds and seven assists in roughly 34 minutes, Tyrese Maxey led all scorers with 28 points, and Jaylen Brown added 19 points, eight rebounds and six assists in his own Philadelphia debut. Jalen Brunson led New York with 21 points but needed 19 shots to get there.
Philadelphia took the lead in the third quarter and never gave it back. For fantasy managers, though, the box score matters less than the structure underneath it: who handled the ball, who took the shots, and how Nick Nurse covered for a frontcourt that has been thin since Ariel Hukporti tore his Achilles in the preseason.
The opening-night lines that matter
The Sixers' four stars all reached at least five assists, which says a lot about how evenly the ball moved in game one. Here is how the key players on both sides finished, per box score reporting from multiple outlets.
| Player | Team | Points | Rebounds | Assists | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tyrese Maxey | 76ers | 28 | Not confirmed | At least 5 | Game-high scorer |
| Jaylen Brown | 76ers | 19 | 8 | 6 | Debut after Boston trade |
| LeBron James | 76ers | 14 | 9 | 7 | About 34 minutes, some at center |
| Joel Embiid | 76ers | 13 | 11 | 6 | 4-of-15 FG, 3 blocks, about 33 minutes |
| Jalen Brunson | Knicks | 21 | Not confirmed | Not confirmed | 6-of-19 FG |
| Karl-Anthony Towns | Knicks | 19 | 12 | Not confirmed | 6-of-9 FG in 23 minutes, foul trouble |
| Andre Drummond | Knicks | 12 | 14 | 4 | 24 minutes off the bench |
Philadelphia's bench also showed up. Anfernee Simons, who carried a questionable tag into the game, scored 13 points with three made threes, and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope added 10 points with two more. VJ Edgecombe scored nine on 4-of-10 shooting.
LeBron at the five: a wrinkle, not a role change
The headline from the ESPN and NBA.com breakdowns is that James spent part of his debut at center. The context matters. Embiid picked up his third foul late in the second quarter, and Embiid said afterward that sliding James to the five was his idea. James played center for the final 2:39 of the first half, mostly guarding Towns, and Philadelphia scored eight points on five possessions in that stretch, including a James roll-and-pass dunk for Brown.
That is a foul-trouble patch, not a new rotation. Adem Bona, who missed the entire preseason with a foot sprain, was back in uniform and took some of Embiid's minutes, and Dominick Barlow and Tacko Fall were listed out before tip. Still, NBA.com's analysis made the point that Embiid is likely to miss a meaningful number of games this season, and James at center is now a proven emergency setting rather than a theory. On nights Embiid sits, expect James to see more small-ball center minutes, which should nudge his rebounding up without costing him the playmaking.
For category leagues, the James profile is clear after one night: a high-assist, moderate-scoring forward who can rebound like a big. He is not going to be a 28-point option in this lineup, and managers who drafted him as a volume scorer should recalibrate toward assists and boards.
The new 76ers hierarchy: Maxey first, everyone else shares
Maxey's 28 points and late steal-and-dunk off an OG Anunoby pass are the clearest signal from the opener. With three other stars on the floor, he remained the most aggressive scorer, and the Sixers' opening play was a Spain pick-and-roll variant that ended with Maxey open for three. He should keep top-25 value as the primary shot creator.
Brown's line, 19 points, eight rebounds and six assists, is the more interesting fantasy development. His scoring volume will likely dip from his Boston peak, but the rebounds and assists suggest his all-around production can hold up. He is a hold in every format and a buy if a league-mate is disappointed by the points total.
Embiid is the volatile piece. He shot 4-of-15 with only four free-throw attempts, one of the worst shooting nights of his career per NBA.com, yet the Knicks scored at a rate of about 85 points per 100 possessions with him on the floor and about 126 with him off it. The defense and the rebounding (11 boards, three blocks, two steals) carried his fantasy line. The question all season will be games played, not production per game.
The Knicks: one flat night, real warning signs
New York scored 100 points on 102 possessions, under a point per trip, something the Knicks did only six times in 101 games last season. They shot about 37 percent from the field. Brunson went 1-of-5 in the fourth quarter, and on 14 Brunson ball screens with Embiid defending, New York scored five points.
The supporting cast struggled more. Anunoby finished with 10 points on 3-of-12 shooting (1-of-9 from three) and was a team-worst minus-20 in 32 minutes. Mikal Bridges scored four points on 2-of-8 shooting. Josh Hart, who had been dealing with ankle soreness, was solid with 14 points on 5-of-10, seven rebounds and three assists in 30 minutes.
The fantasy name to watch is Drummond. In his first game as a Knick, he posted a first-half double-double and finished with 12 points, 14 rebounds, four assists and two blocks in 24 minutes off the bench. Towns' foul trouble inflated that workload, but Drummond has always produced rebounds and steals at an elite per-minute rate, and Mike Brown leaned on him here.
Verdexed angle
Read the opener as a usage map, not a ranking update. Maxey's shot volume is safe. Brown's counting stats look more balanced than his Boston profile, which makes him steadier in category leagues than in points leagues. James is a playmaking forward with sneaky rebound upside when he slides to center, and his minutes in the mid-30s on night one are encouraging for a player in his 24th season.
Embiid is a start whenever active, but fantasy managers should have a plan for his off nights. Bona is the cheapest way to cover Philadelphia's center minutes in deep leagues, while James' center minutes on Embiid rest nights boost his own line rather than opening a real waiver opportunity.
On the Knicks side, do not panic on Anunoby or Bridges after one cold shooting night. Drummond is the add in deeper formats, especially in leagues that reward rebounds, and Towns remains a must-start whose foul trouble was the outlier. What's next
Philadelphia plays its home opener Thursday against the Cleveland Cavaliers, and the Sixers are scheduled for four games this week, the most in the league, which makes their secondary pieces (Simons, Caldwell-Pope, Edgecombe) useful weekly streamers. Watch the Thursday injury report for any rest designation on Embiid or James in the first home game.
The Knicks head to Boston on Friday to face a Celtics team that just blew a 22-point lead in Detroit. New York plays three times this week. If Towns stays out of foul trouble and Brunson's efficiency returns, this loss will look like a ring-night hangover. If the half-court offense stays this stagnant against Boston, the conversation about the supporting cast's roles will get louder quickly.
