Jayden Reed Needs Season-Ending Neck Surgery and Green Bay's Receiver Room Is Down to Two

Jayden Reed's 2026 season is over. The Green Bay Packers placed the wide receiver on injured reserve Wednesday, and head coach Matt LaFleur confirmed that Reed will undergo surgery on the neck injury he suffered in Week 2 against the Jets. LaFleur also relayed that the injury is not believed to threaten Reed's career, which is the most important part of this news.

Reed was hurt on the second play from scrimmage of Green Bay's 20-17 overtime win over New York on Sept. 20. He was placed on a backboard, carted off with his helmet strapped down and hospitalized overnight for testing. The early concern centered on his neck, then shifted to his back, and Wednesday's announcement settled it: surgery, and no return this season.

How we got here

For more than a week, the Packers treated Reed's status as open. He missed the Week 3 Thursday night game against Atlanta, and the team did not rush an IR move while doctors evaluated him. That patience is now resolved, and fantasy managers who were holding Reed on a bench spot can make a clean decision.

Reed started the first two games alongside Matthew Golden and Christian Watson, so his absence is not new to the Week 3 game plan. What changes is the timeline. Instead of planning around a few missed weeks, Green Bay has to build the rest of its season around a two-man receiver core and a tight end.

Who absorbs the targets

Matthew Golden is the biggest beneficiary. The second-year receiver has led all Packers wide receivers in snaps through three weeks and ranks among the league's top 10 in receiving yards, with more than 250 yards on 15 catches and an average near 17 yards per reception. He is already functioning as a No. 1 receiver, and the volume should only grow.

Christian Watson has been the touchdown producer. He has at least four catches in every game and has scored four touchdowns through three weeks, with 284 receiving yards. Watson's role is more downfield and red zone oriented, and that does not change with Reed out.

Tucker Kraft stands to pick up some of the short and intermediate work that Reed handled from the slot. Golden, Watson and Kraft have combined for well over 600 receiving yards so far.

The slot job is the open question. Reports indicate Skyy Moore, who has been the team's return specialist, is expected to handle slot snaps for now. Savion Williams is on injured reserve with a high ankle sprain and could return as early as Week 5, at which point his role is likely to grow. The Packers traded Dontayvion Wicks before the season, and Romeo Doubs left for New England in free agency, so the depth behind the top two is genuinely thin.

What to do in your league

Drop Reed in redraft leagues. With surgery and no return expected in 2026, there is no reason to hold him unless your league has a deep injured reserve system and you are in a dynasty format. In dynasty, the career outlook is the key piece of news, so hold him if you have room.

Golden is a weekly starter. His snap share, yardage and target role make him a WR2 with upside, and he should be valued that way for the rest of the season. If someone in your league still views him as a rookie flier, this is a buy window that may not last.

Watson remains a boom-or-bust WR3. The touchdown rate is unlikely to hold at its current pace, but his role is secure and his ceiling is real. Start him in most formats.

Kraft gets a small bump. He was already a starting fantasy tight end. Fewer competing targets in the middle of the field help his floor.

Skyy Moore and Savion Williams are deep-league speculative adds only. Neither should be started this week, but Williams is worth stashing in larger leagues if your IR slot is open, since his return could come quickly.

Betting angle

Green Bay travels to Tampa Bay on Sunday, and the Buccaneers are dealing with their own problems with Baker Mayfield out and Jalen McMillan now on injured reserve with a PCL sprain. The Reed news should not move the side much, since the Packers have already played most of three games without him.

Where it matters is the player prop market. With fewer receivers to share the volume, Golden's receptions and yardage lines could be a little light if books are still pricing him off early-season roles. Watch for that as numbers are posted. The bigger picture for Green Bay's offense

The Packers have had trouble running the ball and protecting Jordan Love through three games, and the team has been leaning on veteran linemen to stabilize things up front. Losing a reliable underneath target like Reed makes that harder. Reed was often the quick answer when pressure came, and Green Bay now has fewer of those options.

That could push the offense toward more Kraft over the middle, more designed touches for the running backs in the passing game and more shots to Watson and Golden downfield. That last piece is good news for the two receivers and a source of volatility for Love's weekly output.

What's next

Reed's surgery date has not been publicly set, and the Packers will provide updates as he recovers. On the field, the next marker is Savion Williams. If he is designated to return from injured reserve next week, the slot role could change hands quickly.

For now, the plan is simple: start Golden with confidence, keep Watson in your lineup and let Reed go in redraft formats.
