James Hagens Goes on Injured Reserve With a Back Injury After a Cross-Check: How Boston Replaces Its Rookie Scorer and What Fantasy Managers Should Do

The Boston Bruins placed rookie James Hagens on injured reserve Saturday with a back injury, retroactive to Nov. 5, and recalled forward Mikey Eyssimont from AHL Providence. Hagens left early in the third period of Thursday's 6-2 win in Pittsburgh after Penguins defenseman Samuel Girard cross-checked him in the back, and head coach Marco Sturm said the rookie will be out a few weeks.

The timing stings for Boston and for fantasy managers who grabbed Hagens during his early-season surge. He had played all 17 games, with six goals and six assists, and earlier this month briefly held the NHL rookie scoring lead.

What happened

Hagens took the cross-check to his lower back early in the third period at PPG Paints Arena, skated off holding his back and was checked by the medical staff on the bench before heading to the tunnel. He did not return. Boston won the game comfortably behind two goals from Pavel Zacha and two assists each from David Pastrnak and JJ Peterka, improving to 12-4-1 with a third straight win.

Sturm described the injury timeline as a matter of weeks rather than days, and he did not blame Girard, characterizing the play as an unlucky hit rather than a dirty one. No supplemental discipline for Girard has been reported. Because the IR placement is backdated to Nov. 5, Hagens is eligible to come off the list after the minimum seven days, but the coach's timeline suggests he will need longer than that.

How Boston fills the hole

Boston is already short at forward. Matthew Poitras broke his nose on Nov. 2, missed the win in Pittsburgh and did not practice Saturday. That leaves the Bruins without two of the young forwards who powered their early-season youth movement.

NHL.com's projected lineup for Sunday's 1 p.m. ET home game against Florida shows how Sturm plans to cover:

LineLeft wingCenterRight wing
FirstJJ PeterkaPavel ZachaDavid Pastrnak
SecondMikey EyssimontFraser MintenMorgan Geekie
ThirdCasey MittelstadtElias LindholmMarat Khusnutdinov
FourthTanner JeannotSean KuralyMark Kastelic

The structure is telling. Rather than promote a scorer into Hagens' minutes, Boston is leaning on a top line that just carried the offense in Pittsburgh and dropping Eyssimont, a forechecking energy forward, onto the second line. That keeps the top six intact but thins the scoring depth that made the Bruins hard to match up against.

Fantasy fallout

Hagens: In redraft leagues with an IR slot, stash him there and keep him. A few weeks is a manageable absence for a rookie producing at roughly 0.7 points per game. In leagues without IR spots, the decision depends on roster depth: shallow-league managers can cut him and revisit when he resumes skating, while deep-league managers should hold. In dynasty and keeper formats, this changes nothing about his long-term value.

Morgan Geekie: Geekie has scored in three straight games and skates on the second line, and he has also scored on the power play this season. He is the Boston forward most likely to absorb extra offensive opportunity and is worth a look in standard leagues if he is on waivers.

Pavel Zacha and JJ Peterka: Zacha scored twice and Peterka and Pastrnak each had two assists on Thursday. With less depth scoring behind them, expect Sturm to lean on that unit even more. Zacha's multi-position eligibility in many platforms makes him a useful plug-in.

Fraser Minten: Minten scored Thursday and centers the second line. He is a deep-league add who could see more ice time while Boston is short.

Eyssimont: He is a hits-and-penalty-minutes contributor, not a scorer. Only banger-league managers should bother.

The rookie race shifts

Hagens' absence opens the Calder conversation. Chicago's Roman Kantserov has scored in four straight games and leads NHL rookies with nine goals, and Toronto's Gavin McKenna, the No. 1 pick in the 2026 draft, scored again Saturday despite moving to the second power-play unit when John Tavares returned. Both are better short-term fantasy options than Hagens while he is out, and Kantserov in particular is widely available relative to his production.

For Calder-market bettors, a multi-week absence for a rookie who had been near the top of the scoring race is a meaningful hit, since Hagens will lose ground in counting stats while Kantserov and McKenna keep playing. The Verdexed angle

The bigger fantasy question is whether Boston's hot start survives a thinner lineup. The Bruins are 12-4-1 and have won three straight, and their goaltending tandem of Jeremy Swayman and Michael DiPietro has held up, with DiPietro making 16 saves in Pittsburgh. Losing Hagens and Poitras at once tests the depth that separated Boston from other teams, so temper expectations for Bruins secondary scorers and keep Swayman in lineups only against weaker opponents until the forward group is whole. What's next

Boston hosts a short-handed Florida team Sunday afternoon, with the Panthers missing Aleksander Barkov, Brad Marchand, Anton Lundell and Sandis Vilmanis. The next Hagens checkpoint is his return to skating, which would signal he is on track for the low end of a few weeks. Until then, stash him if you can, pivot to Geekie or Kantserov if you need immediate production, and watch whether Poitras returns to ease the crunch.
