Jacob Markstrom Is Out 10 to 14 Days and Akira Schmid Carries the Panthers Net Through a Four-Game Road Trip

The Florida Panthers lost their starting goaltender at practice. Coach Paul Maurice said Tuesday that Jacob Markstrom will miss an estimated 10 to 14 days after he was struck by a puck during Monday's session, and the club placed him on injured reserve. NHL.com's status report described it as an upper-body injury with a one-to-two-week timeline. Florida recalled Cooper Black from the AHL's Charlotte Checkers to back up Akira Schmid, who becomes the clear No. 1 for at least the next week.

The timing is awkward. The Panthers open a four-game road trip Wednesday night in Ottawa, play the second half of a back-to-back Thursday in Pittsburgh, and then cross the border again for Winnipeg after a Sunday stop in Chicago. Maurice said Black will make his NHL debut on the trip, which makes the Thursday game in Pittsburgh the most likely spot, though the club has not formally named a starter for that night.

What happened and where Florida stands

Markstrom has already had one scare this month. He was pulled after the first period of an Oct. 12 loss in Buffalo when he tightened up, sat out the next game as day-to-day and returned a few days later. This injury is different: it came from a puck in practice, it carries a real timeline, and the IR placement means he is out for at least seven days by rule. If the estimate holds, a return around the start of November is the realistic target.

Florida has played well enough in front of a patchwork lineup. The Panthers are 5-2-2 after three straight wins, according to game previews for Wednesday's matchup, and they have done it without captain Aleksander Barkov (long-term injured reserve) and Brad Marchand, who is expected to miss about six weeks with a lower-body injury. Brady Tkachuk, acquired from Ottawa in June, returns to Canadian Tire Centre for the first time as an opponent on Wednesday.

Markstrom's numbers had been solid without being spectacular. One report lists him at 3-1-1 with a .897 save percentage and a 2.21 goals-against average in six appearances, a line that includes the shortened start in Buffalo. Schmid has been shakier, at 2-1-1 with an .878 save percentage and a goals-against average around 3.25 in four games, with sources differing slightly on the exact figures. He made only 15 saves in last Thursday's 3-2 overtime win over Vancouver.

The goalies in the window

Cooper BlackRecalled from Charlotte, expected debut on the tripNo NHL games; 25-13-4 as an AHL rookie last season

Black is a genuine curiosity. At 6-foot-8, he would be the tallest goaltender to play in the NHL, and he went 25-13-4 in his first pro season with Charlotte. He was also recalled during Markstrom's brief absence earlier this month but served only as the backup. Schmid came from Vegas this summer for a 2028 third-round pick after posting a .893 save percentage across 34 games for the Golden Knights last season, and Florida acquired Markstrom from New Jersey in late June after Sergei Bobrovsky and Daniil Tarasov left in free agency.

The Panthers schedule over the injury window

DateOpponentNote
Wed., Oct. 21at OttawaSchmid expected; 7:30 p.m. ET
Thu., Oct. 22at PittsburghSecond night of back-to-back; likeliest Black debut
Sun., Oct. 25at ChicagoAfternoon start
Tue., Oct. 27at WinnipegEnd of the four-game trip
Fri., Oct. 30vs. WinnipegHome again; still inside the 10-to-14-day window
Mon., Nov. 2vs. DetroitEarliest realistic Markstrom return range

That is six games in a 13-day stretch, with Schmid likely to start four or five of them. The back-to-back in the first two nights is the only place where Florida is forced to use Black, unless Schmid struggles badly enough to open a competition.

Fantasy fallout: Schmid is a volume play, not a ratio play

The case for Schmid in fantasy leagues is pure workload. Starting goalies on good teams win games, and Florida remains a strong possession team even with Barkov and Marchand out. The Tkachuk brothers, Sam Reinhart and Carter Verhaeghe have carried the offense, and a goalie who starts four times in a week behind that group will collect wins.

The case against him is the ratios. An .878 save percentage is a real cost in leagues that count save percentage and goals-against average, and his track record in Vegas suggests his true level sits in the high .880s to low .890s rather than the elite range. In head-to-head categories leagues, he is a start for wins and saves in weeks where your ratios have cushion. In points leagues, where wins drive value, he is an easy add wherever he is available.

The streaming windows are clear. Chicago on Sunday is the softest opponent on the trip on paper. Pittsburgh has lost four straight and seven of its last eight, and it is also dealing with Bryan Rust's lower-body injury, but that is the back-to-back game, which makes it the most likely Black start. Winnipeg twice in four days is the tougher stretch, and anyone counting on Schmid for ratios should be most careful there.

Black is not a fantasy option outside of deep dynasty formats. A single debut start on the second night of a back-to-back is a lottery ticket, not a plan, and Markstrom's timeline is short enough that Black should be back in Charlotte by early November.

The Verdexed angle

This is a short absence that looks bigger in daily lineups than it does in season-long leagues. Markstrom managers should hold; 10 to 14 days is roughly five or six games, and Florida's schedule after November gives him a full workload again. The bigger risk is the possibility that a puck-to-the-body injury lingers, so watch whether he is skating with the team by the end of the road trip.

Schmid is the pickup, but the right framing is a two-week rental. His value comes from the team in front of him rather than his own form, and the Panthers have been winning close games rather than suppressing shots. In betting markets, Wednesday's game in Ottawa opened close to a pick'em at most sportsbooks, which tells you how much the market discounts Florida with a backup in net against Linus Ullmark. Verdexed's game-by-game call on Panthers games lives at /nhl/predictions, and today's full NHL card is at /blog/nhl-picks-2026-10-21.

For opposing skaters, the Senators on Wednesday and the Penguins on Thursday both move up a notch in daily formats. Ottawa gets Jake Sanderson back on the blue line, and Pittsburgh's power play went 2-for-2 in Utah on Monday.

What's next

Watch the morning skate in Pittsburgh on Thursday for confirmation of Black's debut, and watch for a practice update on Markstrom when the team returns home for the Oct. 30 game against Winnipeg. If he is a full participant by then, a Nov. 2 return against Detroit is in play. If not, Schmid's run extends into November and his fantasy value rises with it. Either way, Florida's crease is a short-term volume opportunity rather than a permanent change.
