Jalon Daniels Starts for Tampa Bay With Baker Mayfield Out at Least Three Weeks
By Verdexed NFL Desk

Baker Mayfield will miss a minimum of three weeks after dislocating his right thumb late in Tampa Bay's 23-16 loss to Minnesota, head coach Todd Bowles said Monday, and undrafted rookie Jalon Daniels will make his first NFL start when the Buccaneers host the Packers on Sunday. The MRI brought the one piece of good news: no fracture and no ligament or tendon damage, which is why the timeline is measured in weeks and not months.
For fantasy managers and bettors, this is a major downgrade to an offense that was already struggling. Tampa Bay is 0-3, and it now turns to a quarterback who has thrown three NFL passes, none of them completions.
Who is Jalon Daniels
Daniels, 23, spent six seasons at Kansas, where he became the first four-time team captain in program history. He went undrafted in April, signed with Tampa Bay, and beat out veteran Jake Browning for the backup job with a strong training camp.
His college profile is a dual-threat one: legitimate arm talent and real scrambling ability, paired with accuracy and processing concerns that were the main reasons he went undrafted. His only regular-season action so far came in the final minute on Sunday after Mayfield's injury, when he went 0-for-3 with a game-ending interception.
That is a tiny sample, and it would be unfair to judge him on it. But the scouting profile points toward an offense that leans harder on the run game, shortens the passing tree, and asks Daniels to use his legs to extend plays.
What it means for the Tampa Bay offense
The Bucs had already lost three straight, and a rookie making his first start for a winless team is a difficult combination. Expect a simplified playbook: more play-action, more designed rollouts, more quick-game throws, and a bigger role for the running backs as both runners and check-down targets.
Bucky Irving is the most insulated Tampa Bay skill player. The Verdexed projections have him around 57 rushing yards with roughly three receptions against Green Bay, a workload that should hold steady or rise as the staff protects its young quarterback. He remains a weekly RB2 start.
The receivers take the hit. Emeka Egbuka and the rest of the pass catchers now depend on a quarterback whose best trait is not precision in the intermediate area, and Jalen McMillan is already listed out. Egbuka should be downgraded to a WR3 or flex in most formats until Daniels proves he can deliver on time, and the rest of the room is bench-only.
Daniels himself is not a fantasy option in one-quarterback leagues. In superflex formats, the rushing floor makes him a desperation start, and the model projects him for about 173 passing yards on Sunday. That is a low bar, and rushing production would have to carry any useful fantasy day.
The Packers side
Green Bay arrives at 1-2 with its own problems. The Verdexed injury feed lists Josh Jacobs, Jayden Reed and Micah Parsons among the players out for this game. The Packers have been outscored by 11.7 points per game, which is worse than Tampa Bay's minus-5.7, and they come in on 10 days of rest after their last game.
For fantasy, the matchup upgrade is the story. Jordan Love faces a Tampa Bay team that will likely struggle to sustain drives and flip field position, which means more possessions for the Green Bay offense. The model projects Love for about 273 passing yards, the highest passing projection in this game by a wide margin, with Christian Watson, Tucker Kraft and Matthew Golden each projected for roughly 50 to 66 receiving yards.
Love is a solid QB1 streamer this week. Watson and Kraft are the best bets among the pass catchers, and Kraft is a top-12 tight end play in a week with several injuries at the position.
The betting angle
The market moved hard on the news. Tampa Bay opened as a short home favorite of around a point and a half. By Monday, Green Bay was a field-goal-plus favorite, and the total had fallen from the mid-40s to about 39.5. That is a swing of nearly five points on the side and around seven points on the total, a clear signal of how much the market values Mayfield relative to an unproven rookie.
At 39.5, the total now implies a low-scoring game, and the under has already been bet aggressively. The value on the under has likely been captured, so bettors who want exposure should look instead at Daniels' passing props and the Packers' team total.
The Verdexed model take
The model makes Green Bay a 59% favorite against a market price of about 63%. That is a meaningful difference: the market is more confident in the Packers than the model is. The model's positive drivers for Green Bay are recent form, motivation and pass rush, while its overall view is tempered by the Packers' own injuries and poor point margin through three weeks.
In practical terms, the model does not see value laying the 3.5 with Green Bay. If anything, it treats Tampa Bay plus the points as the side with a sliver of value, though the model's lean is modest and the uncertainty around a rookie quarterback's first start is high. This is a game where the prop market offers cleaner angles than the spread.
On Daniels specifically, the model's passing yardage projection of 173.2 puts the value on the under at 177.5 or higher and on the over at 159.5 or lower. Books are likely to hang a number in that range, and the model's view is that the rushing component is more likely to exceed expectations than the passing component.
What's next
The three-week minimum means Mayfield is out for Week 4 and likely at least the next two games after that, with the Bucs reassessing as the thumb heals. Dislocations without structural damage can sometimes heal faster than projected, but quarterbacks need full grip strength on the throwing hand, and the team has every reason to be cautious.
For fantasy managers, the Mayfield roster decision depends on bench depth. In 12-team one-quarterback leagues with shallow benches, he can be dropped for a streamer. In superflex and two-quarterback leagues, he is a hold. For bettors, Tampa Bay is now a team to price as one of the league's weakest offenses for as long as Daniels is under center, and its win-total and division futures have already taken a beating.
