Giannis Antetokounmpo in Miami Reshapes Both Rosters and the Fantasy Board Has Not Caught Up

Miami acquired Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis from Milwaukee in the defining transaction of the 2026 offseason, sending Tyler Herro, Kel'el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr. and Kasparas Jakucionis to the Bucks along with three first-round picks, a pick swap and a second-round selection. The deal was agreed before the draft and formally executed on July 6, the first date league rules allowed.

The picks in the package were substantial: the No. 13 selection in the 2026 draft, unprotected first-rounders in 2031 and 2033, a 2030 swap and a 2033 second. Pat Riley, who has made clear he is not stepping aside, built the package around the premise that a Giannis window is worth mortgaging a decade for.

With training camps opening, the fantasy implications on both sides are still being underpriced, because drafters are anchored to last season's roles rather than to the rotations these two teams will actually run.

What it does to Miami

The headline is straightforward. Giannis is a top-three fantasy asset in any format and remains so in a new uniform, because his production is not scheme-dependent. He rebounds, he gets to the rim, he blocks shots and he creates for others. None of that changes in Miami.

The interesting question is what happens around him. Bam Adebayo's usage is the most affected number on the roster. Adebayo has spent his career as a high-usage offensive hub in Miami's system, and that role does not survive the arrival of a player who requires the ball in similar spots. His assists and his points per game are both likely to decline, while his efficiency should improve.

Andrew Wiggins slots in as the primary third scoring option alongside Giannis and Adebayo, a role that suits him better than a second-option assignment did. Wiggins has historically been most efficient when his shot diet is curated rather than forced, and playing next to a gravity-generating superstar is the best version of that.

The departures matter as much as the arrivals. Herro was Miami's leading perimeter scorer and Jaquez was a rotation staple, which means there are real minutes and real shots available on the wing for whoever wins the camp battle.

What it does to Milwaukee

The Bucks are now a team without a franchise player and with a collection of young pieces, which is the single best environment for fantasy production. Herro becomes the unquestioned first option on a roster that has nobody else who commands the ball, and his usage should reach a career high by a comfortable margin.

Kel'el Ware is the more interesting bet. He shot roughly 39.5 percent from three last season after hitting under 32 percent as a rookie, a jump that, if it holds, makes him a stretch big with defensive counting stats in a starting role. Ware is the kind of player who gets drafted in the middle rounds and finishes in the top 50 when the opportunity arrives.

Jaquez and Jakucionis both inherit minutes they would never have received in Miami. Neither is a confident draft pick, but both are in the tier of players worth watching in the first two weeks.

The Verdexed model take

Verdexed's projection system rebuilds usage from the depth chart rather than carrying forward last season's rates, which is why its outputs diverge most sharply from consensus rankings in exactly this situation.

The model's largest downgrade on the Miami side is Adebayo, whose projected assist total falls meaningfully with a primary creator on the floor. The consensus rankings have been slower to move him, which makes him the clearest fade in the early rounds.

On the Milwaukee side, the model's largest upgrade is Herro, whose projection jumps several tiers on usage alone. Ware is the second-largest, and the gap between the model's ranking for him and his consensus draft position is the biggest single-player value in the middle rounds.

Giannis himself barely moves. The model has him as a top-three overall fantasy asset regardless of jersey, which is the correct read for a player whose production comes from physical dominance rather than from system fit.

Betting angle

The season win total markets are where the trade is most visibly mispriced. Miami's number climbed sharply on the acquisition, which is correct in direction, and the market has priced the Heat as a legitimate contender in a conference where that status carries a premium.

Milwaukee's number fell, also correctly. The question is whether it fell far enough. A team that traded its franchise player and received young pieces plus picks is a team with no incentive to win games in March, and markets systematically underprice the second half of a rebuilding season.

The division and conference futures are the cleaner instruments than the championship market, where Miami's price already reflects the full optimism of the trade.

What to do in your draft

Draft Giannis wherever he falls, which will be in the first three picks. Fade Adebayo relative to consensus. Target Herro a round earlier than his average draft position and Ware two rounds earlier than his.

The general principle is that the offseason's biggest trade creates the offseason's biggest ranking errors, because consensus rankings are built from last season's production and updated slowly. The window to exploit that closes the moment the regular season provides new data, which means the next three weeks are where the edge lives.
