The Dallas Mavericks handed the Houston Rockets their first loss of the season on Friday, rallying for a 116-111 win in an NBA Cup group game behind 35 points from Kyrie Irving and 33 from Cooper Flagg. Irving scored 26 of his points after halftime, added nine assists and went 6-for-6 at the line, while Flagg finished with nine rebounds and six assists in another all-around performance. Kevin Durant led Houston with 28, but the Rockets were without center Alperen Sengun, held out as a precaution with low back soreness, and Steven Adams.

Dallas improved to 4-2. Houston, which had won its first five games, fell to 5-1.

How the game turned

Houston controlled stretches of the first half, but Irving took over after the break. His second-half scoring kept Dallas within reach and then pushed the Mavericks in front, and he extended the NBA's longest active streak of made free throws to 54. Late in the game, Amen Thompson missed a free throw and was called for a lane violation, handing possession back to Dallas at a critical moment. Flagg made several of the closing plays that sealed the result, and Daniel Gafford chipped in 18 points.

Cooper Flagg is already a fantasy cornerstone

Flagg's line on Friday followed a 29-point, 11-assist game against Miami earlier in the week. The pattern is clear: Dallas is using him as a primary creator, not just a finisher, and his rebound and assist totals make him a category-league monster. Points, boards, assists and defensive stats in the same box score is the profile of a first- or second-round fantasy asset, and he is producing it before Thanksgiving of his second season.

For managers who drafted him a round or two later than this, there is nothing to do but enjoy it. For managers trying to trade for him, the window is closed. His price is only going up.

Kyrie Irving's usage is the other half of the story

Irving's 35 points were a season high, and the MVP chants inside the arena captured the mood. The fantasy takeaway is that Dallas has two high-usage creators who can share the floor without cannibalizing each other: Irving tends to take over late as a scorer, while Flagg's value is spread across categories. Irving's free-throw accuracy and steady assist totals make him a strong points-league starter and a valuable percentages piece in category formats.

The one consideration is workload. Dallas has been careful with Irving's minutes in past seasons, and back-to-backs remain a scheduling risk worth tracking in weekly leagues.

Houston without Sengun

The Rockets' first loss came without their offensive hub. Sengun's absence was described as precautionary, and there was no indication it is a long-term issue, but it shows how much Houston's offense depends on him. Durant carried the scoring load, and Thompson took on more ball-handling.

Fantasy fallout: if Sengun misses more time, Durant's usage climbs and Thompson's assist numbers get a lift. Houston's frontcourt depth is thin with Adams also out, which opens minutes for the next big on the depth chart. That player is a short-term streamer in deeper leagues only while both centers are sidelined.

Sengun managers: do not panic over a precautionary absence. Check the injury report before Houston's next game and look for practice participation. Low back soreness can linger, but a one-game rest is not a reason to sell.

The betting angle

The result is a reminder that undefeated starts get priced aggressively. Houston's five-game run had the market treating the Rockets as one of the West's elite teams, and a loss without their starting center does not change that view much. The bigger signal is Dallas: a team with two creators playing at this level, and a defense anchored by length, has a strong case for being undervalued on the moneyline. Track Sengun's status before Houston's next game; his availability is the largest single swing factor in Rockets lines right now.

What it means for your league

Hold and start: Cooper Flagg and Kyrie Irving every night they play.

Monitor: Alperen Sengun's back. A single precautionary absence is not a red flag yet, but it is worth checking practice reports.

Streamer watch: Houston's backup bigs only if Sengun and Adams both remain out.

Category note: Flagg's assist growth is the most important development here. A forward who adds six or more assists a night is a rare commodity, and it raises his ceiling in every format.

The NBA Cup group stage continues next week, and Dallas' early win gives it a head start in its group. For fantasy, the more lasting takeaway is that the Mavericks' offense runs through two players who are both producing like stars.
