Commanders at 49ers Preview: Deebo Samuel Is Out, Mike Evans and Christian Kirk Are Questionable for Monday Night
By Verdexed NFL Desk

Deebo Samuel will not play Monday night. Kyle Shanahan ruled the 49ers receiver out with his hamstring injury after Saturday's practice, along with Nick Bosa (knee, calf), safety Marques Sigle (ankle) and linebacker Garret Wallow (hamstring). That leaves the unbeaten 49ers hosting the Washington Commanders at Levi's Stadium (8:15 p.m. ET, ESPN/ABC) with Mike Evans questionable because of rib and Achilles injuries, and with Christian Kirk questionable with a calf injury while he waits to be activated from injured reserve.
San Francisco is 5-0. Washington is 1-3-1 after a 27-27 overtime tie with the Giants, and its own final report rules out running back Jacory Croskey-Merritt (groin), backup quarterback Marcus Mariota (knee), cornerback Javontae Jean-Baptiste (pectoral) and edge rusher Charles Omenihu (groin, ankle). Stefon Diggs is questionable with a hamstring injury. Dan Quinn would not commit to him on Saturday.
The 49ers receiver room is down to its last few bodies
Evans did not practice all week, though he worked on the side on Thursday and Friday, according to reports from the team's practice sessions. Shanahan suggested the club may not know his status until hours before kickoff. Since Evans' rib injury goes back a couple of weeks and the Achilles soreness is new, managers should plan as if this decision comes late Monday afternoon.
Kirk has been on injured reserve since Aug. 30 with a calf injury. The 49ers opened his 21-day practice window on Thursday, and he was limited Thursday and Friday. Shanahan said Saturday that Kirk could be activated before Monday, per ESPN's Nick Wagoner, but NBC Sports called a Week 6 return unlikely and pointed to Week 7 as a more realistic target. Demarcus Robinson is still on IR with a high ankle sprain, and Shanahan mentioned Week 7 as his earliest return, too.
One report counted only three fully healthy wide receivers on the roster: Brandin Cooks, Jacob Cowing and Jordan Watkins. If Evans sits, Brock Purdy's targets go to whoever is left at wide receiver, plus the two players most likely to absorb that work, George Kittle and Christian McCaffrey. Kyle Juszczyk is expected back, which gives Shanahan more two-back looks that cut down on three-receiver sets.

Start/sit for the 49ers
Start Brock Purdy. The injuries at receiver are real, but fantasy analysts across the industry still treat Purdy as a QB1. McCaffrey and Kittle give him two reliable targets even if every receiver question breaks the wrong way, and the 49ers are favored by more than a touchdown at home.
Start Christian McCaffrey. McCaffrey took a rest day Thursday, returned to full work Friday and was listed as resting rather than injured on Saturday's report. Washington has been tougher against the run than expected, but his receiving work protects his floor, and with Samuel out he is a likely candidate for more targets.
Start George Kittle. Kittle is the clearest beneficiary of the Samuel absence. Washington has been one of the worst teams in the league at defending tight ends in fantasy terms, and Kittle was not among the players the 49ers ruled out or listed as questionable.
Mike Evans is a start if active, with a plan B. Since this is the last game of the week, anyone starting Evans has no pivot unless they keep a late-game backup on their roster. Managers in flexible leagues should put a Monday player like Cooks or a Commanders pass catcher in the flex spot so they can move Evans out if needed. Kirk and Cowing are only deep-league dart throws until the 49ers clarify roles.
Start/sit for the Commanders
Start Jayden Daniels. Daniels practiced in full on Thursday and Friday despite a left-elbow listing and carries no designation. His legs give him a floor that a road underdog script tends to raise, since Washington will likely be throwing late if San Francisco builds a lead.
Start Terry McLaurin as a WR2. McLaurin was limited Thursday and Saturday and sat Friday under a hamstring and rest designation, but he was cleared and has no game status. If Diggs is inactive, McLaurin's target share becomes the easiest projection in the game.
Rachaad White is a flex play; Austin Ekeler is a sit. With Croskey-Merritt out, White and Ekeler split the backfield. White (shoulder) and Ekeler (chest) were both limited but neither got a designation, and most analysts prefer White as the fantasy option. He is a volume flex against a defense that just lost Bosa. Ekeler is a deep-league PPR flier at best.
Diggs is a sit unless he is active and healthy. A questionable hamstring tag on a Monday game means the inactive list arrives roughly 90 minutes before kickoff. Do not lock him in without a late-swap fallback.
Betting angle
Most sportsbooks have San Francisco at -7.5, with Covers noting the line opened there and has crept upward at some shops. The total opened around 50.5 and moved to the 51.5 to 52 range, per ESPN and other books, and the moneyline sits near 49ers -425 and Commanders +330 at ESPN's listed book.
The injury news cuts both ways. Bosa's absence weakens the 49ers pass rush against a mobile quarterback, which supports Washington backdoor cover arguments. At the same time, the Commanders are thin in the backfield, could be without Diggs, and are lining up as a road team in prime time against an unbeaten team. The total has moved toward the over even with the 49ers receiver room depleted, which tells you the market trusts Purdy, McCaffrey and Kittle more than the names behind them.
The cleanest player angles sit with the volume-certain pieces: Kittle's receiving yards and McCaffrey's receptions benefit directly from the Samuel and Evans uncertainty, and Daniels' rushing number benefits from a likely trailing game script. Check those lines after the inactives drop, because an Evans scratch should move them. For Verdexed's full read on every Week 6 game, see the Week 6 picks page and the NFL predictions hub.
The Verdexed take
This is a matchup where the fantasy floor is concentrated in a handful of players. Purdy, McCaffrey, Kittle, Daniels and McLaurin are the reliable starts, and everyone else carries late news risk. The best move for Sunday is roster management, not projection: keep a Monday-capable bench player available, and avoid locking a questionable receiver into a spot that does not allow a late swap.
For bettors, the injury report has largely been priced into the spread, so any edge comes from reacting to Monday's inactive list faster than the market does. An Evans or Diggs scratch is the biggest swing point left.
What's next
Both clubs post inactives about 90 minutes before Monday's kickoff, and the 49ers must make any Kirk activation official before then. Washington goes on its Week 7 bye after this game, so Daniels, McLaurin and White managers should line up replacements before the next waiver run. San Francisco travels to Atlanta in Week 7, where Kirk and Robinson could both be closer to returning.
