Christian McCaffrey Is Cleared for the Raiders as Mike Evans, Deebo Samuel and Christian Kirk All Sit: Who Catches Brock Purdy's Passes in Week 9
By Verdexed Fantasy Desk

The San Francisco 49ers will host the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday with Christian McCaffrey back in the lineup and three of their top wide receivers out. The team ruled out Mike Evans (rib and Achilles), Deebo Samuel (hamstring) and Christian Kirk (knee) on its final injury report Friday, while McCaffrey was removed from the report entirely after returning from a hamstring issue. Pass rusher Nick Bosa was a full practice participant and is also set to play. For fantasy managers, this is a week to lean on McCaffrey and tight end usage while avoiding most of San Francisco's receivers.
McCaffrey sat out Wednesday's practice and returned in a limited capacity Thursday before being cleared. His availability is the single most important fantasy development in this game, because a depleted receiver room means an even larger share of the offense is likely to run through him as a rusher and receiver.
The injury report at a glance
Kyle Shanahan told reporters that Kirk's injury is to his meniscus and that the team does not yet know whether he will need surgery, which makes Kirk's timeline the most uncertain of the three.
| Player | Injury | Week 9 status |
|---|---|---|
| Christian McCaffrey | Hamstring | Off report, playing |
| Nick Bosa | Returned to full practice | Playing |
| Mike Evans | Rib, Achilles | Out |
| Deebo Samuel | Hamstring | Out |
| Christian Kirk | Knee (meniscus) | Out |
| Demarcus Robinson | Ankle | Questionable |
| Upton Stout | Shoulder | Questionable |
Evans has been a recurring absence, and his Achilles designation adds caution beyond this week. Fantasy managers who have been holding him through the injury should keep him stashed only if they have a deep bench.
Who catches passes for Brock Purdy
With three veterans out, the 49ers' receiver group shrinks to Demarcus Robinson, Jordan Watkins, Brandin Cooks, Jacob Cowing and KhaDarel Hodge. Robinson missed the previous five games with his ankle injury and is expected to be activated from injured reserve; one report says he is expected to play Sunday despite the questionable tag.
None of those receivers has a reliable fantasy profile. Cooks brings the most experience and could see the most routes, while Robinson and Watkins will rotate on the outside. Treat all of them as deep-league dart throws at best.
The bigger winners are George Kittle, who is not on the injury report, and McCaffrey. Kittle should see a larger share of the intermediate targets that normally go to the outside receivers, and he moves firmly into the top tier of tight end starts this week. McCaffrey's role as a receiver out of the backfield was already a weekly fantasy strength, and it should expand further.
Brock Purdy's outlook
Brock Purdy is a lower-end QB1 or high-end QB2 this week. The matchup with Las Vegas is favorable, but losing three receivers at once caps his ceiling, and Shanahan's offense may lean on the run game and short passes to McCaffrey and Kittle. Managers with a stronger option on the waiver wire or bench should consider it, but Purdy remains startable in most formats because of the opponent and the strength of the two featured weapons.
The Raiders' side
Las Vegas has a lighter injury report. Cornerback Darien Porter was limited after missing Wednesday with a groin injury suffered in the previous game against the Jets, and defensive tackle Thomas Booker's status has been reported inconsistently, so check Sunday's inactives. A Raiders secondary with a banged-up corner is another reason to trust Kittle and McCaffrey to produce.
Betting angle
San Francisco has been favored by close to 10 points in this game since the 49ers came out of their bye, with McCaffrey, Evans and Bosa all expected back at the time. Two of those three are playing, and Bosa's return gives the defense a needed lift against a Raiders offense that has struggled. The receiver absences are the main reason to temper expectations for a blowout, since a thinner passing attack makes it harder for San Francisco to score quickly. Bettors laying a big number need McCaffrey to carry the offense.

The Raiders' fantasy outlook
Las Vegas faces a difficult road environment with Bosa back for San Francisco. Raiders quarterbacks and receivers are risky starts against a 49ers defense that gets its best pass rusher back, and the Raiders' backfield is a volume-based flex at best if the game script turns against them. The most appealing Raiders play is a pass catcher with a defined short-area role, since a team that falls behind tends to throw underneath often. The 49ers D/ST is a strong streaming choice for the same reason.
What to do in your league
Start Christian McCaffrey as an RB1 with an elevated receiving outlook. Start George Kittle as a top-tier tight end. Keep Brock Purdy as a fringe QB1. Sit every 49ers wide receiver except in the deepest formats, where Cooks is the most logical dart throw.
Looking ahead, Samuel's hamstring and Evans' Achilles are the timelines to track. Kirk's meniscus is the biggest question mark: if surgery is required, he could miss significant time and Robinson would hold a larger role through the middle of the season. Check the 49ers' Wednesday practice report next week before making any waiver decisions on San Francisco receivers.
