Christian McCaffrey Gets a Broncos Run Defense Ranked 30th and the 49ers Are 3-Point Favorites
By Verdexed NFL Desk

Brock Purdy and the unbeaten San Francisco 49ers host Bo Nix and the 2-1 Denver Broncos at Levi's Stadium on Sunday at 4:25 p.m. ET, and the matchup that decides it may not involve either quarterback. Denver has allowed 431 rushing yards at 5.1 yards per carry through three games, both 30th in the league, and Christian McCaffrey is waiting. San Francisco is a 3-point favorite after opening at 2.5, and the total has climbed from 46.5 to 47.5.
The 49ers will do it without Nick Bosa, who is out with knee and calf injuries, and Mike Evans is a game-time decision with a rib injury. Denver arrives with only one player ruled out.
Purdy's September
Purdy was named NFC Offensive Player of the Month, the first Player of the Month award of his career. He completed 60 of 83 passes (72.3%) for 789 yards with nine touchdowns and one interception in September, and added 10 rushes for 93 yards and a score. His 133.1 passer rating leads the NFL, and he is the only quarterback this season with multiple touchdown passes and a rating of 100 or better in each of the first three weeks.
The Week 3 win over Arizona, 36-30, showed how San Francisco wins now. Purdy went just 15 of 27 but threw for 297 yards and four touchdowns. George Kittle caught six passes for a team-high 82 yards and two fourth-quarter scores, and McCaffrey ran 15 times for a season-high 75 yards and a touchdown while catching four passes for 41 yards.
That is an offense creating big plays on modest volume. Against a defense that cannot stop the run, the volume should rise.
Denver's comeback habit
The Broncos have made a habit of digging out of holes. They trailed the Rams 16-0 in Week 3 before winning 30-26 on a 1-yard Nix touchdown run with 47 seconds left, and the game ended with Talanoa Hufanga intercepting a Matthew Stafford pass in the end zone. Nix has 14 come-from-behind wins since the start of last season, per one preview, and the offense under play-caller Davis Webb has looked better after halftime.
The first halves are the problem. Nix went 17 of 34 for 186 yards with two touchdowns and an interception against the Rams, and he has four touchdown passes and three interceptions on the season. Courtland Sutton caught only three of seven targets for 46 yards. Falling behind Purdy's offense by 16 points is a different proposition than falling behind the Rams.
The injury report
| Player | Team | Pos | Injury | Status |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nick Bosa | SF | DL | Knee, calf | Out |
| Mykel Williams | SF | DL | Knee | Out |
| James Thompson Jr. | SF | DL | Ankle | Out |
| Mike Evans | SF | WR | Ribs | Questionable |
| Dre Greenlaw | SF | LB | Quadriceps | Questionable |
| Keion White | SF | DL | Hamstring | Questionable |
| Jaden Dugger | SF | LB | Shoulder | Questionable |
Denver's only player ruled out is Dondrea Tillman, so the injury story is all on the home side, and San Francisco's defensive line is the headline. With Bosa and Williams out and White questionable, the 49ers' edge rush is thin, which gives Nix more time than most opponents will allow him. San Francisco also called up Brandin Cooks this week as receiver insurance behind Evans.
Fantasy fallout
Christian McCaffrey is the top play in this game. He has 166 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 35 carries, plus 13 catches for 104 yards, and his season-high in carries is only 15. Previews of this game expect his carry count to jump against a defense allowing 143.7 rushing yards per game, third-most in the league. Start him as a top-five back with real multi-touchdown upside.
Brock Purdy stays a QB1. The concern is game script: if McCaffrey is moving the chains, Purdy's attempts shrink. He has shown he can post big lines on 27 attempts, though, and he has added rushing value. George Kittle is a weekly TE1 coming off a two-touchdown game.
Mike Evans is the uncertain piece. A rib injury is the kind that can limit snaps even if he plays. If he is active, he is a boom-or-bust WR3. If he sits, Cooks and the rest of the receiver room split the outside targets, and none of them is a confident start.
Bo Nix is a streaming option at best. The 49ers' depleted pass rush helps him, and his rushing adds a floor, but his passing efficiency has been poor. If Denver trails, the second-half volume is there, which makes him more appealing in superflex than in one-quarterback leagues.
Denver's backfield is a split that leans against both backs this week. J.K. Dobbins ran 17 times for 49 yards against the Rams with one catch for four yards. R.J. Harvey is the passing-down back, with a 42.1% snap rate and a 44.1% route share per RotoBaller's usage data. San Francisco holds opponents to minus-0.13 EPA per rush, tied for 11th-best. Dobbins is a low-end flex; Harvey is the better PPR option if Denver falls behind.
Courtland Sutton is a WR3. Low efficiency against the Rams aside, he is the receiver Nix looks for in comeback mode, and a thinner 49ers pass rush gives those longer routes time to develop.
Betting angle
The line movement favors San Francisco. The spread moved from 2.5 to 3, and the moneyline sat at 49ers -148, Broncos +124 on Friday. The total moved from 46.5 to 47.5 on Sept. 29 and has held there, with one sportsbook report showing 97% of the money and 73% of the tickets on the over.
The case for the 49ers covering is simple: the league's best quarterback by passer rating, a top running back facing a bottom-three run defense, and an opponent that has needed late comebacks to win. The case for Denver is the 49ers' defensive line injuries and a Broncos team that keeps games close enough to steal late. A field goal is a thin spread for a matchup this lopsided on paper, but a hook-free number at 3 is one of the most common final margins in the sport.
On the total, the over thesis depends on McCaffrey moving the ball and Denver chasing points in the second half, which is exactly how Broncos games have gone. The risk is that a run-heavy 49ers plan bleeds the clock. The Verdexed model's call on Broncos at 49ers is at /blog/nfl-week-4-picks-2026, with win probabilities on /nfl/predictions.
What's next
Evans' status will be known about 90 minutes before kickoff. Managers with Evans should have a fallback from the late window ready, because a rib injury can turn into a limited snap share even if he plays. The 49ers have a Week 8 bye; the Broncos are off in Week 10, so both teams' players remain available through the coming weeks.
The bigger question for San Francisco is how long its defensive line stays depleted. Bosa was already ruled out for multiple weeks, and if the edge rush cannot generate pressure on its own, opposing quarterbacks get upgrades against the 49ers through October. For Denver, a loss would drop the Broncos to 2-2, and their run defense will be a weekly target for opposing backs until it improves.
