The Florida Panthers got a mixed injury update and a sour home opener in the span of two days. Coach Paul Maurice said Friday that Brad Marchand will miss about six weeks with the lower-body injury he suffered Tuesday in Los Angeles, a relief compared with early fears of a season-ending injury but still a significant absence. Then on Saturday, Kirill Kaprizov scored three goals and added an assist as the Minnesota Wild beat the Panthers 4-1 in Sunrise, snapping Florida's streak of seven straight home-opener wins dating to 2019.
With captain Aleksander Barkov also out long-term, the Panthers are without two of their most important forwards, and the fantasy implications ripple through the lineup.
The Marchand timeline
Marchand was hurt in Florida's 2-1 win over the Kings on Tuesday. He was high-sticked by defenseman Brandt Clarke while driving to the net, crashed into the right post in an awkward position and immediately grabbed his left knee. Maurice outlined the timeline Friday: roughly three weeks until Marchand is back on the ice, then another three weeks of rehab. That points to a return in late November.
Marchand had already missed the first two games of the season while recovering from reported hip and sports hernia injuries, so this is his second absence in a short span.
Barkov's timeline is less clear. Maurice said on October 6 that the captain would be out about six to eight weeks, while at least one report has suggested a longer recovery of 10 to 12 weeks. Either way, Florida will be without both players for at least the next month.
| Player | Injury | Timeline |
|---|---|---|
| Brad Marchand | Lower body (left knee) | About 6 weeks, late November target |
| Aleksander Barkov | Long-term | 6 to 8 weeks per Maurice; some reports longer |
How Florida is adjusting
The Panthers have responded by moving Sam Reinhart to center, and a projected lineup for Saturday's game had Carter Verhaeghe, Sam Bennett and Matthew Tkachuk on the top line, with Brady Tkachuk, Lars Eller and Reinhart on the second. On the power play, the projected first unit featured Brady Tkachuk, Bennett, Reinhart, Seth Jones and Matthew Tkachuk.
The power play has been a problem. Through four games, Florida had scored just one power-play goal, and Saturday's loss did not help. Matthew Tkachuk scored the Panthers' only goal, and Jacob Markstrom made 25 saves in defeat.
Fantasy fallout
Sam Reinhart: The move to center is a mixed bag. He will see more defensive responsibility and faceoffs, which can help in leagues that count faceoff wins, but his goal-scoring could suffer if the move takes him away from his best shooting areas. He remains a must-start, but temper expectations slightly.
Matthew Tkachuk and Sam Bennett: Both should see more ice time and more power-play opportunity with Marchand and Barkov out. Tkachuk is the Panthers' clear offensive leader and should be in every lineup. Bennett gets a bump in leagues that value hits and penalty minutes along with scoring.
Brady Tkachuk: His role on the first power-play unit is a significant boost to his value. If Florida's power play starts producing, he will be one of the main beneficiaries.
Carter Verhaeghe: A top-line role with Bennett and Matthew Tkachuk makes him a strong start. He has been a consistent scorer and should benefit from the added opportunity.
Marchand managers: Move him to injured reserve if your league allows it. He should return in late November, so hold him in most formats.
Kaprizov and the Wild
Kaprizov's night was one of the best individual performances of the young season. He scored on the power play, added a second goal to make it 3-1 in the second period and completed his hat trick with an empty-net goal with 1:04 left. Matt Boldy opened the scoring 53 seconds into the game with his first goal of the season. It was Kaprizov's seventh career hat trick, two behind Marian Gaborik for the most in Wild history.
Jesper Wallstedt made 29 saves for Minnesota, which improved to 3-1-1 after losing two in a row. His performance is worth noting for fantasy managers looking for goalie depth: he is establishing himself in the Wild's crease.
Betting angle
The Panthers' injuries are significant for both game-by-game and futures betting. Florida's depth has been tested before, but losing two top forwards at once is a different challenge. Expect the market to be cautious with Florida in the short term, particularly against strong opponents.

What to do in your league
- Start: Matthew Tkachuk, Sam Reinhart, Sam Bennett, Carter Verhaeghe. - Upgrade: Brady Tkachuk with a first-unit power-play role. - IR: Brad Marchand. Hold him for a late-November return. - Wild: Kaprizov is a must-start. Wallstedt is worth a look as a goalie add.
What's next
The Panthers will need to find answers on the power play quickly. Florida's depth will be tested over the next month, and the way the lineup holds up without Marchand and Barkov will determine whether the Panthers can stay near the top of the Atlantic Division. For fantasy managers, the key is to identify which Florida forwards benefit most from the added ice time, and right now that list starts with the Tkachuk brothers and Bennett.
