Austin Ekeler Is Back in Washington and Rachaad White Has Not Practiced in London
By Verdexed Fantasy Desk

Austin Ekeler is a Washington Commander again. The team signed the veteran running back to its 53-man roster this week, placing linebacker Leo Chenal on injured reserve to open the spot, which makes Ekeler eligible to play Sunday against the Colts in London. The timing lines up with an injury to Rachaad White, who was the only Commander who made the trip to England and did not practice Wednesday.
Washington has been careful to separate the two moves. A team source told ESPN that the Ekeler signing was in the works before White got hurt, and was not a reaction to the shoulder injury. For fantasy managers, though, the effect is the same: the Commanders' backfield just got more crowded at the exact moment one of its main pieces is in doubt.
Ekeler's road back
Ekeler, 31, spent the previous two seasons in Washington before tearing his right Achilles in Week 2 of the 2025 season. He went unsigned through the offseason and into the first three weeks of 2026, and he worked out for Carolina recently after the Panthers lost Jonathon Brooks. Washington ultimately brought him back, and reports describe him as fully healed.
The expectation is a depth role, at least at first. Ekeler's value has always come from the passing game, and Washington knows exactly how he fits into its offense. That familiarity is the main reason he can contribute quickly, even after a year away.
The roster spot came at a painful cost. Chenal suffered a neck injury in the second quarter of the Week 3 win over Seattle and had surgery to repair a fracture, ending his season. Washington also placed linebacker Marvin Jones on the practice squad injured list. Losing Chenal thins out a linebacker group that is now asked to hold up on a long road trip, which matters for IDP managers who rostered him and for anyone streaming against the Commanders' defense.
Rachaad White's shoulder
White hurt his shoulder late in the first half of Sunday's win over Seattle. He returned in the third quarter and finished with eight carries for 35 yards and a six-yard touchdown catch, but he has not practiced since. Dan Quinn said White is receiving treatment, and the team's estimated report from its first London session again listed him as a non-participant.
White has not been ruled out. But two straight missed sessions in a week that included an overseas flight make him a real question mark, and his status is one of the most important fantasy decisions of the London game.
How the backfield stacks up
Jacory Croskey-Merritt has been the lead early-down back. He has 47 carries for 142 yards and a touchdown through three weeks, including 19 carries for 36 yards in Week 3. The efficiency has not been there, but the volume has.
Rachaad White has split the snaps almost evenly with Croskey-Merritt to this point and has handled much of the passing-down work. If he sits, those snaps need a new home.
Kaytron Allen has had a small role, mostly as a short-yardage and change-of-pace option, with only a handful of snaps through three weeks. He would likely see more carries if White is out, and his physical running style suits short-yardage and goal-line snaps.
Austin Ekeler is the wild card. If White misses the game, Ekeler is the most natural fit for the third-down role, but it would be his first game action in more than a year. Expect a modest snap count.
What to do in your league
Croskey-Merritt is a flex play this week. The volume should rise if White sits, even if the per-carry numbers have been weak. In leagues where you need a running back, he is a reasonable start against Indianapolis.
White is a hold. Do not drop him over one shoulder injury. If you have a better option, bench him until he practices. If he is your only choice, wait for Washington's final report before deciding.
Ekeler is a speculative add in PPR leagues. He should not be started in Week 4, but he could carve out a receiving role in the weeks ahead. If your bench has a spot for a running back with a possible weekly role, he is a fair use of it.
Kaytron Allen is only worth a look in very deep leagues.
The quarterback situation adds another layer. Jayden Daniels was estimated as limited in London as he works back from his elbow injury and will wear a brace when he returns, while Marcus Mariota has been the starter. Mariota's mobility tends to lead to more designed quarterback runs and fewer check-down targets for running backs, which slightly lowers the receiving upside of whoever fills White's role.
Betting angle
Running back props in this game should be watched closely once Washington releases its final report. If White is ruled out, Croskey-Merritt's rushing yardage line could be posted before the market fully adjusts to his larger share. If White is active, expect a three-way split that makes every running back prop harder to trust.

What's next
Washington's final injury report will set White's game designation, and that will define the backfield plan in London. Offensive lineman Sam Cosmi and safety Nick Cross did not travel and have already been ruled out. The next thing to watch is how Ekeler is used in his first game back. If he immediately takes passing-down snaps, his value will grow quickly, especially in PPR formats.
For now, Croskey-Merritt is the back to start, White is the back to hold, and Ekeler is the back to stash.
