Ariel Hukporti's Torn Achilles Leaves the 76ers Without a Healthy Backup Center for Joel Embiid

The Philadelphia 76ers lost backup center Ariel Hukporti for the 2026-27 season after he ruptured his right Achilles tendon in the first quarter of the preseason opener against the New York Knicks. The team said he has undergone successful surgery. Hukporti was set to be Joel Embiid's primary backup, and his loss leaves Philadelphia's center rotation dangerously thin a week before the regular season.

The Sixers' remaining big-man options are either hurt or undersized, and their cap position makes a replacement difficult. For fantasy managers drafting this week, the news touches Embiid's workload, the value of Philadelphia's other frontcourt players and the team's nightly rotation plans.

The center depth chart

Philadelphia's options behind Embiid, as of this week:

Tacko FallInjuredLeft hip strain; reevaluation in 7 to 10 days

ESPN reported that Bona has yet to participate in training camp because of the foot sprain, while Yahoo Sports reported that his injury should be healed by opening night. Fall is in camp competing for an open two-way spot.

The cap problem

Philadelphia cannot simply sign a replacement. The Sixers can apply for a disabled player exception worth about $1.7 million, but the team sits roughly $1.8 million below the first apron. That means filling the open roster spot would require waiving a player or making a small trade. Some reporting describes the team as hard-capped at the first apron.

In short, the likeliest solution in the short term is internal: more small-ball minutes with Wade, Barlow or Walker at the five until Bona is healthy.

What it means for Joel Embiid

The Sixers have spent several seasons carefully managing Embiid's workload, and the instinct will be to continue doing so. But a thin center rotation creates pressure in the other direction. If Bona is not ready for opening night, the minutes behind Embiid will come from undersized forwards, and the team will be more dependent on Embiid when games are close.

For fantasy, that creates a small upside case: when Embiid plays, his minutes could run slightly higher than the team would prefer. It does not change the core concern with Embiid, which is availability. He remains a high-risk, high-reward pick whose value depends on how many games he plays. Hukporti's injury does not make him more durable; it only makes him more important.

Philadelphia's injury management extends beyond Embiid. LeBron James, now with the 76ers, is managing foot arthritis and back trouble, and the team is already planning his nights off. The more stars the Sixers rest, the more the depth chart matters.

Why Hukporti mattered

Hukporti was not a household name, but he filled a specific role. A 7-footer with size and rim protection, he gave Philadelphia a traditional center for the minutes Embiid sits, which has been a weakness for years. The Sixers' bench units have struggled in past seasons when the backup center could not hold up physically, and Hukporti was supposed to solve that.

Losing him in the first quarter of the first preseason game is a cruel blow for a young player who had worked his way into the rotation. It is also a reminder of how quickly depth can disappear. Philadelphia entered camp feeling reasonably covered behind Embiid and now has its starting center, two injured backups and a group of forwards.

Small-ball beneficiaries

Dominick Barlow: The most interesting deep-league name. If Philadelphia uses him as a backup five, he could see rebounding and defensive opportunities that do not show up in his projected minutes.

Dean Wade: A veteran forward who can space the floor and defend multiple positions. More minutes at center increase his rebounding numbers, but he remains a deep-league option at best.

Jabari Walker: A rebounding forward whose value rises if he plays the five in reserve units.

Adem Bona: The name to watch. If he is healthy by opening night, he becomes the primary backup and a speculative late-round pick in deeper formats, especially for blocks. If his foot lingers, the small-ball group takes over.

Betting angle

A thinner rotation matters most on nights Embiid sits. Philadelphia's lines on those nights will move more than they did last season because the backup plan at center is weaker. Rebounding props for opposing centers are worth watching in games when Embiid is out and the Sixers go small.

Season-long, the Sixers' win total and playoff odds depend far more on Embiid's and James' health than on any backup center. Still, the margin for error just got smaller. Verdexed's NBA game probabilities will be published at NBA predictions once the regular season begins.

What's next

Watch Bona's practice status over the next week, as well as any roster move to open a spot. Philadelphia could look to the trade market for a minimum-salary center if Bona's foot remains a problem. For fantasy drafters, the takeaway is simple: Embiid's ceiling is unchanged, and Bona is the late-round flier to monitor.
