Coby White and Kon Knueppel Are Both Hurt as the Post-LaMelo Hornets Head Toward Opening Night

The Charlotte Hornets' first season after trading LaMelo Ball is opening with their two projected starting guards hurt. Coby White strained his left calf during training camp and was ruled out for the entire preseason, with team doctors set to reevaluate him just before the regular season. Kon Knueppel suffered a left hamstring injury during an offseason on-court workout, and the Hornets plan to reevaluate him during the first week of the regular season.

Charlotte opens the season at Brooklyn on October 21 and hosts Atlanta two days later. Neither guard has a firm return date, and both were expected to carry major roles in an offense that just lost its primary playmaker.

How the Hornets got here

The Hornets traded Ball and Josh Green to Minnesota in a four-team deal announced in July that also involved Chicago and Brooklyn. Charlotte's return included Naz Reid, a 2033 unprotected first-round pick, pick swaps and second-round picks. Ball had led the team in assists for six straight seasons, and ESPN's preseason roster review listed a pass-first organizer as Charlotte's biggest need.

The plan was for Brandon Miller and Knueppel to take on bigger roles, with White running the offense. A June projection from Yahoo Sports had the starting lineup as White, Knueppel, Miller, Reid and Moussa Diabate.

The injury board

A league source told reporters that Knueppel's injury does not look serious enough to derail his season. White dealt with a similar calf issue last season, which is the more worrying detail.

Fantasy fallout for drafters

Coby White: His value in Charlotte rests on usage. With Ball gone, White is the closest thing the Hornets have to a lead guard, and that role could make him a solid mid-round fantasy asset when healthy. The calf strain, combined with the history, makes him a risk in the early rounds. Draft him at a slight discount and expect him to be eased into minutes.

Kon Knueppel: A second-year wing whose role should grow in a Ball-less offense. A first-week reevaluation means he could miss some of the opening stretch. He is a reasonable value pick if he slides in drafts, since the injury is not expected to be long term.

Brandon Miller: The biggest winner on paper. With both guards hurt, Miller will start the season as the focal point of the offense, and his usage should rise. He is the Hornet to target in drafts.

Naz Reid: A high-floor big who projects for a starting role in Charlotte after coming off the bench for much of his Minnesota tenure. He gains slightly if Charlotte's guards miss time, because the offense will run through its frontcourt more often.

The calf history

The detail that should concern White's managers most is the recurrence. White missed time with a calf strain last season as well, and calf injuries have a habit of lingering or returning when a player ramps up to full speed. The Hornets' decision to hold him out of the entire preseason is cautious, which is sensible, but it also means he will enter the regular season without game conditioning.

Expect a minutes restriction in his first few games back even if he is cleared for the opener. Fantasy managers in head-to-head leagues should be careful about counting on him in the first scoring period, and those in points leagues should plan for a ramp-up rather than a full workload from day one. The upside remains intact; the timeline is what is uncertain.

Who handles the ball?

The bigger question is how Charlotte runs its offense in the opening week if White and Knueppel both sit. The Hornets lack an obvious backup point guard, and the team's preseason games have been a chance to try different ball-handlers. Expect Miller to handle the ball more, with whatever guard depth Charlotte has filling in. For deep-league managers, the backup guard who wins those minutes could be a short-term pickup in the first week.

Betting angle

Charlotte's preseason market already reflected a rebuilding team, and a slow start without its two projected starting guards would only reinforce that. The opening games at Brooklyn and against Atlanta are spots where the Hornets could be underdogs, and the line will depend on White's status.

For player props, Miller's points and usage-related markets are the ones most affected while White and Knueppel are out. Verdexed's NBA game probabilities will be published at NBA predictions once the regular season begins.

What's next

White's reevaluation comes just before opening night, and Knueppel's follows in the first week of the season. Fantasy drafters should treat both as probable early-season absences and plan around Miller as the Hornets' centerpiece. If White is cleared for the opener, he regains his status as a mid-round value with a big role. If not, Charlotte's offense starts the season in Miller's hands.
