Travis Konecny Lands on IR as the Flyers Fall to a Franchise-Worst Winless Start, and Trevor Zegras Moves to Center
By Verdexed NHL Desk

The Philadelphia Flyers placed winger Travis Konecny on injured reserve Sunday with a lower-body injury, retroactive to Oct. 8, and recalled defenseman Oliver Bonk from the AHL's Lehigh Valley Phantoms. Head coach Rick Tocchet said he did not expect the injury to be long term, describing Konecny as out this week and day-to-day after that. Saturday's home game against the Ottawa Senators is the most likely earliest return.
The Flyers then lost 4-1 to the Carolina Hurricanes on Sunday, setting a franchise record by going winless through their first seven games, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer. Konecny had been their top producer in a slow start, with three assists in five appearances, and Tocchet responded to his absence by reshuffling the forward lines.
The new-look lineup
Without Konecny, Tocchet put the lines in a blender. Trevor Zegras moved into the middle between Matvei Michkov and Michael Bunting, and Noah Cates was added to the power play. Rookie Porter Martone, who scored his first goal of the season on the power play the previous Saturday, worked on the first two power-play opportunities against Carolina.
Bonk made his season debut on the blue line and was given top-pair minutes beside Travis Sanheim. It was a difficult night for the 2023 first-round pick, who took one of the Flyers' two penalties and finished minus-3.
The decision to put a recalled defenseman on the top pair says something about where the Flyers' blue line stands. Philadelphia's coaching staff is clearly willing to give young players hard minutes in search of a spark, and that willingness extends to the forwards as well. Fantasy managers should expect more lineup churn over the next week, not less, as Tocchet looks for combinations that can generate offense without Konecny.
| Player | Change | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Travis Konecny | Injured reserve | Earliest return Saturday vs. Ottawa |
| Trevor Zegras | Moved to center | Between Michkov and Bunting |
| Noah Cates | Added to power play | Filling Konecny's spot |
| Oliver Bonk | Recalled, top pair | 16:28 TOI, 2 shots, minus-3 |
Fantasy fallout
Trevor Zegras is the most interesting name here. A move to center beside Michkov gives him one of the most skilled wingers on the team, and centers who also see power-play time tend to produce steadier point totals. If he stays in the middle after Konecny returns, his value could rise for the rest of the season.
Matvei Michkov benefits from playing with a playmaking center. He has the talent to be the Flyers' leading scorer in any given stretch, and the line change could unlock some of the production that has been missing in the team's winless start.
Michael Bunting gets a short-term boost from top-six minutes. In deeper leagues, he is a streaming option for his combination of points, hits and penalty minutes.
Porter Martone is the rookie to watch on the power play. A first-unit role in a struggling offense is still a valuable role, and he is a speculative add in deep and dynasty formats.
Travis Konecny managers should hold. Tocchet's comments point to a short absence, and Konecny's role on the top line and first power-play unit should be waiting for him.
Oliver Bonk is not a fantasy option yet. A minus-3 debut is not unusual for a young defenseman playing above his expected role.
Why the Flyers' start matters
A franchise-record winless start is a significant problem for a team that hoped to take a step forward under Tocchet. The Flyers have struggled to score, and losing their top producer only made that harder. It also puts pressure on the coaching staff to find combinations that work before the season slips away.
From a betting perspective, a winless team can be a value play, because markets sometimes overcorrect for slow starts. But the Flyers' underlying issues, a thin offense and a young defense, are real, and Konecny's absence makes them harder to solve this week.
The betting angle
Philadelphia is scheduled to face the Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday before the Saturday home game against Ottawa. Without Konecny, the Flyers' totals are worth leaning under, given their scoring troubles. For the model's view, see the NHL predictions page and the NHL picks when they publish for each slate.
What to do in your league
1. Hold Konecny. This looks like a short IR stint, not a long-term problem. 2. Consider adding Zegras if he is available, especially if he holds the center role. 3. Keep starting Michkov, whose value should rise with a playmaking center. 4. Stream Bunting in deeper leagues for his multi-category production. 5. Stash Martone in dynasty formats.
The Flyers need a spark, and Tocchet is trying to find one by moving his pieces around. Konecny's return should help, and his history as a durable, high-motor winger suggests he will slot straight back onto the top line and first power-play unit. In the meantime, the line changes create a few fantasy opportunities worth acting on.
