MLB Today's Best Bets (September 27): No Model Board on Game 162

Major League Baseball plays game 162 on Sunday, September 27, with two postseason spots still unassigned and a piece of history within reach: Houston and Texas are both 80-81, tied atop the American League West, and one of them will end the day as a division winner with a losing record. The number this column exists to publish is again missing: Verdexed's per-game win probabilities, confidence tiers, and edge figures were not retrievable at publication, because verdexed.com is blocked from this publishing environment and the prediction, edge board, and accuracy pages did not surface through search. There is no biggest edge to name today, and no probability below belongs to Verdexed's model. What follows is a stakes and market read, published as information and entertainment rather than betting advice, for readers of legal betting age (or of legal age in their jurisdiction) and located where sports wagering is legal.

How to read this

A normal edition carries two numbers per game: Verdexed's model probability, and the market's implied probability with the book's margin stripped out, reported as the gap between them, where edge equals model minus market in percentage points. Verdexed's methodology pages, retrievable today even though the game pages were not, describe a logistic regression fit on thousands of past games using weighted features (recent form, team strength, home field, rest, starting pitchers), run point-in-time so it only sees information that existed before the game, then blended with the de-vigged market price and calibrated so a stated 65 percent behaves like a real 65 percent. Those pages also state that every prediction is logged before first pitch and scored afterward, with win accuracy and Brier score (lower is better) published. Those trailing figures were not retrievable today, so no hit rate is cited here and none should be inferred. Every price below is a sportsbook number surfaced through search, a consensus opinion rather than a forecast. No edge is claimed today, and on the days one is, it is still not a guarantee.

The model's top edges today

None are claimed; inventing one here would defeat the purpose. The games below are listed for their stakes and their prices, with every starter described as projected rather than confirmed, a caveat that carries extra weight on the last day of a season.

Game 162, market side only

**Astros at Athletics, Sutter Health Park, 3:05 p.m. ET.** The cleanest stakes on the board: Houston wins the American League West with a win, because it holds the head-to-head tiebreaker over Texas. The Astros arrived here by routing the Athletics 13-2 on Saturday, Jeremy Pena reported 4 for 6 with two home runs and Yordan Alvarez adding a three-run shot. Brady Basso, listed at 1-3 with a 2.31 ERA, is the reported Athletics probable; Houston's starter was listed as to be determined, which on a clinch day can mean anything from an opener to most of the staff. Houston has been quoted near minus 158 with a run line of minus 1.5 and a total posted at 9.5.

**Rangers at Twins.** Texas needs two things: beat Minnesota, and have Houston lose. The Rangers got here with a reported 6-2 win over the same Twins on Saturday in a rain-delayed game, Danny Jansen and Jake Burger both reported to have homered. Neither finale starter was confirmable at publication, and a club in a win-or-go-home game will use arms that a season-long model has little reason to expect.

**Rays at Phillies, 3:05 p.m. ET.** Philadelphia controls the last National League wild card: beat Tampa Bay and it is in. Arizona owns the tiebreaker, so finishing level does not save the Phillies, which turns this into a one-game season for them. Zack Wheeler was the reported Philadelphia probable opposite Nick Martinez, both projected rather than confirmed. Tampa Bay has been reported to have locked the top American League seed already, so read the lineup card before the price.

**Padres and Diamondbacks, 3:10 p.m. ET.** The other half of the same math. Arizona has to win and then wait on Philadelphia, having pulled within a game on a reported six-game winning streak. Walker Buehler was reported as the San Diego starter and Michael Soroka, listed at 9-5, as Arizona's. San Diego has already clinched a wild card, which is exactly the situation where a manager rests regulars in a game that decides someone else's season. Sources disagreed on the venue, so check the card.

**Cubs and Red Sox at Tropicana Field, 3:05 p.m. ET.** Not a playoff game, and still the day's oddity. With a nor'easter bearing down on Boston, the finale was moved out of Fenway Park to St. Petersburg, reported as roughly the sixth time in major league history that weather has forced a regular-season game to a neutral site. Both clubs are reported to be in the field already, which usually means a lineup written for rest.

What could go wrong

The largest unknown is the one at the top: with Verdexed's numbers unreadable, there is no independent model opinion here to set against these prices. Below that, game 162 is the single worst day of the year for a pregame number. Clinched clubs rest regulars, eliminated clubs hand innings to arms with too little major league sample for any model to weigh, and a contender in a win-or-go-home game will pull an announced starter after two innings and use its closer in the fourth. Three of the five games above had at least one starter listed as to be determined or reported only secondhand, so treat every name as projected until the club posts it. Weather is live too: the nor'easter has already relocated one game, and wind reaches totals before it reaches sides. Records, clinch scenarios, and Saturday results above come from wire copy rather than a verified feed, and the standings can move by the inning today.

Responsible play

**This is model output, not betting advice.** Verdexed publishes its model's probabilities and edges for informational and entertainment purposes only. Nothing here is a recommendation to place a wager, and no outcome is guaranteed, even the model's highest-confidence picks lose regularly.

**You must be of legal betting age in your jurisdiction** and located where sports wagering is legal to bet. Sports betting is not available everywhere; know and follow the laws where you are. Never bet more than you can afford to lose, and never chase losses.
