MLB Today's Best Bets (August 24): No Model Board to Read on a 10-Game Monday

By Verdexed Analytics

Ten games fill Monday's board, every one of them at night, running from Tampa Bay at Detroit and Boston at Miami at 6:40 p.m. ET through Cincinnati at San Francisco at 9:45. The job of this column is to set Verdexed's model probability beside the market's price, strip the sportsbook's margin out of the price, and report the gap. Monday continues a run of days where that has not been possible: verdexed.com is unreachable from this publishing environment, and per-game win probabilities, confidence tiers, and edge figures were not retrievable through search either. So the plain headline is that there is no biggest edge to name today. Nothing below is called an edge, no confidence tier is assigned, and no probability is attributed to the model. That is a data access limit on this column, not a verdict on the model or on the slate. What follows is the market's read alone, labeled as such throughout, published for information and entertainment only, not betting advice, for a reader 21 or older located where sports wagering is legal.

How to read this

A normal edition of this column carries two numbers per game. The first is Verdexed's model probability, built, per the published methodology, from recent form, team strength and run differential, home-field advantage, head-to-head history, rest, and, in baseball, the starting pitcher and the bullpen, fit as a logistic regression on thousands of past games and evaluated point-in-time, meaning the model sees only information that existed before first pitch. The second is the probability the market implies once the vig is removed. The gap between them is the edge, and Verdexed computes it from the model's independent opinion rather than from a market-blended number, because measuring a market-blended probability against the market would be circular. Every prediction is logged before the game and scored afterward on win accuracy and Brier score. Two limits apply today. Trailing 30-day accuracy and Brier figures were not retrievable, so no hit rate is cited here, and no reader should assume one. Per-game probabilities were not retrievable, so nothing below is an edge. Even in a normal edition, a well-calibrated 60 percent side loses four times in ten, which is precisely what 60 percent means.

The model's top edges today

There are none to publish. An edge requires a model probability and a market probability observed at the same moment, and only one of the two was available Monday. Rather than fill this section with a number not read off Verdexed's board, it stays empty. A slate with thin edges and a slate whose edges could not be read are different findings, and Monday is the second.

Highest-confidence sides

What follows is the market's ranking, not the model's: the prices and matchups surveyed on Monday's board, which is the comparison point a model number would be measured against. Starters are probables unless a team has announced them, and prices move by book and by hour.

**Red Sox at Marlins, 6:40 p.m. ET, loanDepot Park.** The clearest price on the board at publication, with Boston reported near -136 on the road and Miami near +116. Ranger Suarez (reported 5-3, 3.41) is listed for Boston against Sandy Alcantara (reported 13-8, 3.46) for Miami, a matchup the price does not fully respect. One third-party model surveyed for comparison put Boston near 57 percent, worth naming only to be explicit that the figure belongs to somebody else, not to Verdexed, and is not an edge.

**Cubs at Diamondbacks, 9:40 p.m. ET, Chase Field.** Chicago was quoted near -150 with Arizona near +124, roughly a 60 percent implied favorite before the margin is stripped. Neither starter was confirmable at publication.

**Phillies at Mariners, 9:40 p.m. ET, T-Mobile Park.** An interleague opener between two contenders, with no price confirmed at publication and no probables retrievable. Luis Arraez sat out Sunday for Philadelphia as a precaution after cramping on Saturday, which is a day-to-day note rather than an absence, and exactly the sort of input worth checking against the posted lineup instead of assuming.

**Rockies at Nationals, 6:45 p.m. ET, Nationals Park.** Ryan Feltner and Cade Cavalli were the reported probables, unconfirmed at publication. Washington against a road Colorado club is the kind of matchup where a season-long model and the market usually agree, which is to say it is rarely where an edge lives.

**Rays at Tigers, 6:40 p.m. ET, Comerica Park.** Detroit's lineup is still short of full strength: Riley Greene, working back from a right hamstring strain, was reported to be returning to Detroit on Monday to continue ramping up baseball activity, which is a step in a rehab process and not an activation. Treat him as out until a transaction says otherwise.

**Reds at Giants, 9:45 p.m. ET, Oracle Park.** San Francisco is playing without Matt Chapman, who was reported to be undergoing season-ending core muscle surgery. That is a standing subtraction from the Giants' lineup and infield defense, and it is the sort of input a model absorbs and a hunch does not.

What could go wrong

The largest risk is the one already named. With no Verdexed probabilities in hand, a reader holds the market's opinion, a set of pitcher names, and a few injury notes, not a measured edge. Do not treat the market prices above as the model's view, because they are not.

Beneath that sit Monday's ordinary traps. Most starters listed here are probables rather than announced, and a scratch during batting practice changes the single most important input a baseball model has. Arraez is day-to-day and Greene is rehabbing, and neither status should be rounded up or down. Six of the ten games start after 9:30 p.m. ET, so late lineup news lands close to first pitch, and bullpen availability after a full weekend goes unpublished and can decide any one-run game.

Responsible play

**This is model output, not betting advice.** Verdexed publishes its model's probabilities and edges for informational and entertainment purposes only. Nothing here is a recommendation to place a wager, and no outcome is guaranteed, even the model's highest-confidence picks lose regularly.

**You must be 21+** (or the legal age in your jurisdiction) and located where sports wagering is legal to bet. Sports betting is not available everywhere; know and follow the laws where you are. Never bet more than you can afford to lose, and never chase losses.
